Thanks for your image improvements
Hi Д.Ильин, thanks for your vectorizations of images at Affine symmetric group ↗. I have two small requests about your latest edits: first, for :File:A_2_lattice_and_hyperplanes.svg ↗, to me it stands out that there is much more white space at the right of the image than on the other three sides; is it possible to either crop or better center the figure? Second, for :File:Infinite_dihedral_group.svg ↗, the axis-marker {{mvar|x}} is very close to the label {{tmath|s_0}}, which could confuse some readers. One option would be to remove the axis labels entirely (they are not referred to in the text at all); another would be to move the {{mvar|x}} below or to the right of the axis it labels. Do you think it is possible to make these changes? Thanks again, --JBL (talk ↗) 23:17, 4 September 2025 (UTC)
: {{done}}. Д.Ильин (talk) 09:45, 5 September 2025 (UTC).
::Thank you, lovely! --JBL (talk ↗) 18:43, 5 September 2025 (UTC)
:::Thanks again for your edits. I see that you worked on a few more images (the labeled alcove images :File:Alcoves_labeled_by_affine_permutations.png ↗ and :File:Alcoves_labeled_by_affine_permutations-inverse.png ↗) and that they were reverted by {{u|jacobolus}}. Jacobolus didn't quite make explicit his objection, but I think the issue is that your version decreased the white space around the labels; this may have decreased readability, especially where the overbar above a negative entry nearly merged into a horizontal line of the lattice just above it.
:::If you're still interested in working on this (and of course, there is no obligation, and you still have my thanks for the other image improvements you made), my suggestion would be to try to maintain the same amount of space around the labels (I spent a lot of time working on that in the original version) but making more room in the image by removing the bottom row and leftmost column of triangles.
:::All the best, --JBL (talk ↗) 00:18, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
::::Д.Ильин has been replacing hundreds if not thousands of raster images from commons which had been marked as potentially benefiting from replacement with SVG alternatives, and doing so in as far as I can tell a fairly indiscriminate way. In some cases, these tags on commons were appropriate enough, and the replacement images are either comparable or improvements. But in many cases, the tags on commons were in my opinion inappropriate to begin with, the previous raster images were fine and didn't need replacing, and the replacement images are noticeably worse than the originals. Some of the changes that are in my opinion disimprovements include: (1) replacing nicely rendered raster images of 3d models with effective shading (e.g. produced using ray tracing software) with vector replacements which either have flat shading or use SVG gradients in a way that the appearance is less realistic; (2) using colors which are noticeably more garish than the originals, for no apparent reason; (3) changing the thicknesses of lines in diagrams in ways that seem arbitrary and often seem like worse choices; (4) using worse fonts, changing the font size arbitrarily, or placing labels less carefully than the original diagram.
::::I frankly don't understand what the goal is of the image replacement strategy. Many if not most of the PNG/JPG images being replaced are excellent and have high resolution, and even if the SVG files were drop-in exact replacements in every case, it seems like a waste of time. Part of the problem is clearly with misguided (inappropriate / overzealous) tagging of raster images on Commons; I'm not sure who was responsible for that. –jacobolus ↗ (t) ↗ 02:09, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
:Hi Д.Ильин, I once again have small requests about one of your edits. In the new version of the figure you added in this ↗ edit, could you please fix the following things? The spacing on the equal sign is poor (there should be the same amount of space between the s_0 and = as between the = and s_n); likewise the space between the tilde-S_n and the comma that follows it is too small, and the space between the > and the 2 is too small. Also, the appearance of the > is definitely off; perhaps it is italicized? Finally, the infinite sign seems to be in much smaller font than the other symbols; it would be better if it were slightly larger (as in the .png original). Thanks again, --JBL (talk ↗) 20:13, 24 October 2025 (UTC)
:: The problem is that the rendering of text in .svg-files in WCommons is very poor, so extra effort is required to ensure the text looks the same as in browsers. I worked around these errors in this file and fixed it. Д.Ильин (talk) 13:01, 25 October 2025 (UTC).
:::One possibility is to convert text to outlines (and optionally include a hidden layer with the text in case someone else wants to edit it). –jacobolus ↗ (t) ↗ 17:03, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
:::Thank you! --JBL (talk ↗) 17:12, 25 October 2025 (UTC)
:This may have been drawn to your attention by some rather dumb reverts, but in this image
:https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sphere_symmetry_group_ih.svg
:the two circles/ellipses that cross on the equator are supposed to pass through the vertex labeled with a pentagon. --JBL (talk ↗) 23:58, 26 October 2025 (UTC)
:: I had fixed this error in the file. Д.Ильин (talk) 09:29, 27 October 2025 (UTC).
::One other problem with this image is that the caption in the article describes the great circles as "cyan" but as drawn in the SVG they are purplish blue. There are several cases like this where the color changes in these png -> svg conversions seem pretty arbitrary, the colors ended up with aren't great choices (often distractingly colorful and poorly separated in lightness), and sometimes the new colors don't match the captions. –jacobolus ↗ (t) ↗ 15:02, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
::: I have already changed the color of the lines. Д.Ильин (talk) 17:24, 27 October 2025 (UTC).
