Bird taxonomy
Hi, I've noticed that you have been changing the genus of birds in Wikipedia articles such as the blue crane ↗, the demoiselle crane ↗ and the bluethroat ↗.
English Wikipedia uses the taxonomy and the common names of the IOC World Bird List ↗ as explained here ↗.
There are other world checklists including BLI/IUCN, Clements, and Howard & Moore 4. A project has been established to create a single taxonomy for world birds by the "Working Group Avian Checklists" – you can read about it here ↗. It uses the IOC list as a starting point. - Aa77zz (talk) 09:16, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
:Sorry, I did not realise. I did check the Talk pages, but did not see anything regarding wp:consensus ↗. I did notice that Anthropoides ↗ had been wp:BLAR ↗ with the note ''Change to a redirect to Grus - wikipedia follows IOC classification'' but no explanation of why, who decided this, etc. So I thought {{Citation needed}} and wp:BeBold ↗ Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 11:21, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
::Wikipedia has used the taxonomy of the IOC for a long time. In 2017 this was confirmed by a vote of the bird editors who were active at that time - see the archive here ↗. By following a single authority we can keep article consistent - species, genera, families etc. The BirdLife International (BLI) taxonomy used by the IUCN (see here ↗) lags the IOC and Clements - probably because BLI lack the resources to keep up to date with all the changes. For example the classification of the hummingbirds was reorganised based on a big study published 2014 (see the tribe Trochilini ↗ - 11 genera resurrected etc) - but BLI haven't yet implemented these changes. - Aa77zz (talk) 12:13, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Taxonbar placement
Taxonbars should not be placed above an External links section, as you had done at mayhaw ↗, nor above a navbox as you had at ''Pildra ↗''. Taxonbars go at the end of the page. The only things that should come after them are {{tl|Authority control}} (if present), categories and stub-sorting templates (if present). Plantdrew (talk) 17:28, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Sandbox
Please note that user sandbox pages, such as your User:Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins/sandbox, are ''not'' allowed to be filed in mainspace categories as if they were already finished articles. The page ''must'' stay ''out'' of categories while it's in sandbox, and categories are to be added ''only'' if and when the content is actually being moved into a real article. Since I've already had to remove the page from categories three times in the space of just one month, please also note that it is a thing you can be sanctioned for being disruptive ↗ if it continues, so please do not readd your sandbox page to categories again. Bearcat (talk) 13:47, 20 April 2024 (UTC)
:Thanks. And Thanks for deleting stuff from MY Sandbox. I'm sorry you had to do it three times, yet only warned me now. This crackdown probably explains why I have seen articles produced from Drafts with lots of <-- remarks all over them.
:As you seem to be a '''''Very Important Wikipedian''''', perhaps you can convince the higher-ups to simply filter Users Sandboxes out of Categories instead? So that we {{small|juniors}} can actually experiment with a FULL page preview in our ''private, testing'' areas ?? I'm sure that is not beyond the realms of standard coding? Fish taxonomy
WP:Fishes ↗ follows the 5th edition of Fishes of the World for fish taxonomy above the level of genus, and Fishbase for genera and species. I have undid your revision to Template:Taxonomy/Tinca ↗ to reflect that. I put forward a proposal to change the taxonomic authority to a more recent paper but I withdrew it because it did not get any support. In addition, if you change a taxonomy template you should show the reference used, otherwise it looks as if you have just pulled the change out of thin air, Quetzal1964 (talk) 12:27, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
:Thanks @Quetzal1964. I would support such a change if you propose it again. Although it is the seminal, definitive, and indeed, chosen work, it is hard to use, especially online. Those reference links that I have found are vulnerable to rot (indeed, the ref links on the template you reverted are dead). I can only find a copy of the index pages online, {{BioRef|fotw5}} which therefore cannot adequately cite Wikipedia articles. There are several good refs on both Tincinae ↗ and Tench ↗ pages regarding Tincidae. I trust you will leave these alone, as we are allowed to highlight taxonomic discrepancies within articles. They are not heresy!<br/>
:As we are here to build an online encyclopaedia for the modern age, it seems a strange step to insist editors have to buy an eight year old book full of outdated ideas!!. I have also recently become aware, that even if I had added a cast-iron ref, it would have still been reverted Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 13:08, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
::I have edited the article on tench and added information about the ''Fishes of the World'' classification and left in the alternative classifications. I have a pdf of Fishes of the World which was available online at one time. Quetzal1964 (talk) 13:30, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
:::The link you sent is not a full pdf. Like all others I have found, it is just the index, and references/biblography pages without paying a charge. The only extra bit in this resource is a (bad) full colour scan of the front cover. But, Thanks again. Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 18:28, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

I am currently revising fish articles following the change in taxonomic source we agreed in October 2024. I came across this article ↗. You appear to edit this so that the article was on Labeobarbus marrocanus, which was "correct" as per Fishbase at the time. However, you stated that you couldn't move the article. I am writing to ask if you are now aware of how you would go about getting an article moved? Not that this one needs moved! Quetzal1964 (talk) 10:52, 18 January 2025 (UTC)
:Yes, I am aware of how to ''Move'' now, including using WP:RM/TR ↗ if I hit a roadblock.

Characins (really updating the taxonomy on fish articles
Hi
Thank you for your edits to the taxonomy in fish articles.
Couple of questions.
Why don't you use the small text button on the edit bar under Advanced? It saves time on manual formatting and automatically inserts <nowiki><small>text</small></nowiki> on the selected text.
Did you know the simplest way to write a species list is the Specieslist template? See my recent edit to ''Hypomasticus ↗''. The only issue with it is common names, if you want to include common names it doesn't really work so I only use it in synonyms lists in taxoboxes, where I would use "Genus list" or "Specieslist" rather than Linked genus list or "Linked species list", or where there are no listed common names.
Do you have a system for choosing which fish article you are going to edit to update the taxonomy of? I am trying to do it from the top of https://www.calacademy.org/scientists/catalog-of-fishes-classification and working my way down. If you are doing the same then maybe we need to coordinate it in some way. Quetzal1964 (talk) 08:00, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
:Question 1: I was not aware of that. Might use it in future. Thanks!!
:Question 2: Yes, I am aware of that and have used it recently (See ''Xampylodon ↗''). Also comes in handy for synonyms. Was certainly easier before we standardised on ECoF, as FishBase and WoRMS had lists you could copy and paste into the Specieslist shell which was <strong>much</strong> easier
:Question 3: I am not organised enough to have a plan. I just edit those I stumble over whilst slating my curiosity. Bit random and chaotic I'm afraid. I can't see this messing up your strict list progress, as you will need to open every family, subfamily and genus to check what need to be done. I'm sure you'll enjoy it a little if I have got there before you!!
:Thanks for the advice, and recognition of my efforts!
:Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 08:49, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks for the response.
::My method to use ECof is to search for the genus then on the page use the Ctrl + F and search for "Current status: Valid as Hypomasticus" then copy and pase the species name and authors from there. For synonyms I search for the species rather than trawl through the list of species in a genus I have also recently found that you can link an author to a Wikispecies article by prefixing their name like this <nowiki>Zoologist ↗</nowiki> and get a blue link rather than a redlink. You do need to ensure that there is a Wikipsecies page on that biologist. Quetzal1964 (talk) 13:06, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
''Farlowella myriodon ↗''
Do you have a reference for the genus reassignment? IF so, please indicate it in the article. Otherwise, this should probably be reverted. - UtherSRG (talk) ↗ 19:58, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
:Hi UtherSRG
:The consensus in WP:Fishes ↗ is that we now use Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as our primary source for binomials. This has created a vast amount of work that I, {{Ping|Quetzal1964}} and other editors are now working through. That's where I got it from. I will add text and appropriate referencing to the page shortly.
:Kind regards, Big Blue Cray(fish) Twins (talk) 20:26, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
::Faboo. :) Nice to see a consistent source for taxonomy being used. I understand the level of effort those updates will require. Feel free to tap me for some support. - UtherSRG (talk) ↗ 22:53, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
Supradiscus
Evening, please see my note on the talk page. I think we have to wait for the Catalog of Fishes to catch this up. Quetzal1964 (talk) 20:25, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
:Everything I did complies with Wikipedia ethos - I quoted a WP:RS ↗. Yes, the "error" if it is such lies with ECoF. If I was to stray into WP:NOR ↗, I would say that the synonymization of ''Supradiscus'' with ''Placogobio'' which ECoF references is a book published by Endruweit in 2025, of which the research would have been completed in 2024; whilst ''S. varidiscus'' was described in 2025.<br>
:Actually checking this morning, ECoF have "caught up", so I will now deal with the debris left behind on Wikipedia
