Painting the panthers

It's been a bit more recent than 40 years ago. I recall while I was going to CMU in the early 1980s that they got painted pink before the Penn State game one year. - Ken keisel (talk)

Photos of statues

For future reference, American law on freedom of panorama ↗ does not apply to three-dimensional artworks permanently on display in public places (e.g., statues of panthers on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh). What this means is that although you're the one who took (e.g.) this photo ↗ of the Millennium Panther, the copyright of sculptor Miriani Guido still applies, and will until January 1 of the year that begins after the 70th anniversary of his death (or ''her''? I'm not sure about the name "Miriani"). I haven't been able to find much information about Guido, but the statue went on display in 2001, so even if they died the day afterward, copyright would still continue until 2072.

The picture can't be on Commons. If you want to keep it on enwiki, you'll have to write a valid fair use rationale ↗ - and those only apply to articles, not userpages. Regrettable, I know.

I'm not sure about the copyright status of the other panther statues; it depends on who made them and when they went on public display, and that information isn't necessarily easy to find. DS (talk) 17:31, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
