Fictions

The term is "fiction", not "fictions". Prhartcom (talk) 18:29, 25 January 2015 (UTC)

:Hi, and thanks for commenting! I created :Category:Interactive fictions ↗ as a "set category ↗" for the fictional works, as opposed to the "topic category" :Category:Interactive fiction ↗. The plural "interactive fictions" is used in some published sourceshttp://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn%3Anbn%3Ase%3Aumu%3Adiva-30353 ↗http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1809752 ↗https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=ICk2Fj_W4ygC&lpg=PA184&ots=bX54AXR4KS&dq=%22interactive%20fictions%22&pg=PA184#v=onepage&q=%22interactive%20fictions%22&f=false ↗, and it's in Wiktionary ↗ (not added by me). However, it's true that "fiction" is usually a non-count noun. Do you think "Interactive fiction works" or "Works of interactive fiction" would be an improvement? EALacey (talk) 19:03, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
::Thanks for your reply! I think you convinced me to leave it alone. The Wiktionary entry was convincing (although the following example is for a different kind of fiction than what we're talking about: "The company’s accounts contained a number of blatant fictions.") Even the Wikipedia article on fiction ↗ says "these kinds of fictions" one time (although it uses fiction as an uncountable noun a few other times). And I see what you mean how "set categories" are always plural. Prhartcom (talk) 19:19, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
::Personally, I can't stand "Interactive fictions". I prefer "Works of interactive fiction". Ntsimp (talk) 14:34, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Proteus

When you say based on the article, do you mean the Wikipedia page itself? The article itself cannot be used as a source. I've made that mistake multiple times before I was finally told it can't be used. Here's why: "Wikipedia articles (and Wikipedia mirrors) are not reliable sources for any purpose" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources. It's under the section describing primary, secondary, and tertiary sources.Dohvahkiin (talk) 14:30, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

:Yes, I'd seen that the Wikipedia page described ''Proteus'' as having an open world and hadn't noticed that the sources cited didn't cover this statement. EALacey (talk) 14:45, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

Discussion on Layla Moran talk page

There is a rather spirited discussion currently ongoing at Talk:Layla Moran#Domestic Violence ↗. Seeing as you are an experienced editor that recently edited the page, I would appreciate if you could chime in with your view, in the interests of finding a consensus one way or the other. Alexandra Phillips MEP and Alexandra Phillips MEP

Hello. I noticed you'd edited a page on a newly elected UK MEP who could be confused with one with an identical name. I think some of the disambiguation issues have been resolved, but there is a question of titling one or both pages. I'd like to invite you to comment at Talk:Alexandra L. Hippo (Greek woman)

@EmphasisMine According to the edit history of the Hippo (Greek woman) ↗ page, you were the one who added the "Primary sources" (Livy, Plutarch, and Valerius Maximus). However, I have checked '''Livy''' and '''Plutarch''' and could not find any mention of Hippo's story. Where did you find these "Primary sources"?

Best regards,
Faviola7 (talk) 19:02, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

:This was from 2008, so I don't exactly remember the details, but I don't believe I would have added those references without citing specific books of Livy or Plutarch. From the edit history, I think what happened was that:
:# An early version ↗ of the article was based on Boccaccio, although it included a reference to Valerius Maximus.
:# The article was massively expanded by an editor who has since been banned, but their version ↗ has since been removed from the history for copyright reasons. I think this was when the references to Livy and Plutarch were added.
:# I edited the article to remove material I considered "entirely irrelevant" ↗, and that happens to be the first version remaining after the deleted version. I probably left the Primary Sources section as it was without checking it (although perhaps I might have moved Boccaccio from Primary to Secondary Sources).
:So I'm not vouching for the accuracy of the references to Livy and Plutarch, and I certainly don't object to them being removed if you've found they don't actually mention Hippo. It's likely that the whole article should be reviewed for accuracy. EmphasisMine (talk) 22:58, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
