Quotations need attribution - but where?
Hello {{u|Hairy Dude}}! Thanks for your help ↗ at List of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition monsters ↗! The quotation you've marked with "Attribution needed" comes from ''The Ashgate Encyclopedia of Literary and Cinematic Monsters''. In some cases, the reference is directly there. In other cases it comes one sentence later, as both sentences are based on that source. Do you think it is necessary to repeat the reference here after every sentence for clarity (vs. readability)?<br>
Different topic: Would you happen to have a reference for the grue originating from ''Zork ↗''? Thanks for letting my know! Daranios (talk) 14:40, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
- For the first question, see MOS:QUOTE ↗: {{xt|Per the verifiability policy ↗, direct quotations {{em|must}} be accompanied by an inline citation ↗ from a reliable source ↗ that supports the material.}} It must be clear to the reader where a quotation comes from, so unless the text makes the attribution explicit ("Richard Forest wrote that 'D&D's large variety...{{'"}}), the citation should immediately follow it.
- For the second question: I don't know of any such sources, but it seems very likely since it's a distinctive invention of ''Zork'', which predates the ''Monstrous Compendium'', and anyone who had played it would recognise the name (I would be surprised if Dave Arneson hadn't played it, or at least heard of it and played some other Infocom game, as he was apparently a computer enthusiast and was obviously into "adventure games" in a more general sense). I suppose a {{tlx|citation needed}} is in order, but if you have access to the ''White Dwarf'' issue cited, perhaps you could check that first. Hairy Dude (talk) 19:42, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
