Typos in Categories


Hello, Hugo999,

I think it is fair to say that you create hundreds of categories over the course of a year. If you discover that you have made a mistake in naming a newly created category, made a typo or some other glitch in the wording, please tag the category with CSD G7 tag, '''<nowiki>{{Db-g7}}</nowiki>'''. Of course, empty categories are tagged with a CSD C1 but a G7 tag means that we don't need to wait a week to delete a category that will never be used.

Sports categories



It appears that all categories in :Category:European sport by year and month ↗ ''only'' need to contain {{template|Month year sports events in country category header}}. All the other templates just produce duplicate links/portals etc. Do you want to make these changes? Regards, Kiwipete (talk) 09:22, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Well there should only be the "MonthCategoryNav|TOPIC" which I think is is a description not a topic template I think - but change any surplus categories you see

Unnecessary new categories?


Hello, Hugo999

Why are you creating new categories like :Category:1930 in Australian sport by month ↗ when there are existing categories that cover this topic already? I understand that you are probably responsible for 50% of the categories on Wikipedia after 20 years of editing but we shouldn't abandon existing categories just so that you can keep creating new ones. If you are looking for tasks to do, our categories could use a lot of help with recategorization in some niche areas where there are unnecessary middle levels of organizations. Your knowledge would be invaluable. I frequently tell new editors to not create new categories if there are usable older ones and so I say the same thing to you as well.

Yes, but the "new" categories use the appropriate template and so are a subcategory of say "Australian sport by year and month", which they previously were not, and now 1956 in Australian sport by month links to 1956 in Australia by month.
When the country categories (eg May 1960 events in Australia) were replaced by May 1960 in Australia the sports categories were replaced by a tailored category for each event and the template avoids all that (which myself and others spent time doing individually, as I noted from the occasional history). Use of the template avoids the need for individual tailoring, though some of these categories were more general. )
They are using the correct template but are not actually new as they edit a category previously using a mixture of tailored items which have to be special to each category. The only new category is the "years by month" category eg "1960 in Australian sport by month", and it links to "1960 in Australia by month" . Hugo999 (talk) 03:21, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
