Sigmund Freud ↗
Hello IGAEB, I wonder could you explain this recent edit ↗ that you made to the Sigmund Freud ↗ article? Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 07:35, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
:I added a source that said Freud contributed to the Encyclopedia Britannica. IGAEB (talk) 14:56, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
::What do you think he contributed? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:23, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
:::See the article here: https://archive.org/details/encyclopaedia-britannica-encyclopaedia-britannica.-3-encyclopaedia-britannica-inc.-1926/Encyclopaedia%20Britannica%20-%20Encyclopaedia%20Britannica.%203-Encyclopaedia%20Britannica%2C%20Inc.%20%281926%29/page/256/mode/2up?q=psychoanalysis
:::This is the article I cited. IGAEB (talk) 15:34, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
::::Yes, pages 253-255. Those are pages from an archived version of the 1926 edition of ''Encyclopædia Britannica ↗''. It's not the clearest of print images, but I don't see any Herr S. Freud listed there as an author. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:00, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
:::::At the end of the article, you will see the initials "S.Fr." Flip back to page xxiii, and you will see that these are the initials of Sigmund Freud. I've added page xxiii to my citation to clarify this. IGAEB (talk) 18:19, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
::::::Thank you, now I see it. It's somewhat of a cryptic citation. I wonder is there any way to make it clearer for the reader? Do you know if that was the only edition of the E.B. to which he contributed? Martinevans123 (talk) 18:40, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
:::::::It wasn't the only edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica to which he contributed. I have the 1958 edition on my bookshelf, and Freud's article was in there too. I don't know if that edition is available online. IGAEB (talk) 18:51, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
::::::::I see. How intriguing. Perhaps he contributed every year between those two? Or perhaps (more significantly, I'd say) before 1926. I've no idea how many editions are available online, although we should not necessarily be driven by that restriction. I am much indebted to you for explaining. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:01, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::Since Freud died in 1939, the 1958 edition had to be a reprint of the earlier editions. Albert Einstein and Henry Ford were also listed as contributors to the 1958 edition, and they had also died by then. IGAEB (talk) 19:08, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
::::::::::Yes, I can't imagine who might have been regarded as a more authoritative source on that subject between 1939 and 1958, so perhaps the chapter was just reprinted. It would be interesting to see what happened after 1958. I see that at List of contributors to the Encyclopædia Britannica ↗ the table is arranged by edition first, rather than by name, which seems a little odd. There's no explanation but it suggests, at first sight, that Freud contributed only to that 13th edition? Martinevans123 (talk) 20:01, 24 June 2026 (UTC)
::::::::::Would it be worth a question at Talk:Sigmund Freud ↗? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:17, 25 June 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::::Possibly. IGAEB (talk) 12:47, 25 June 2026 (UTC)
::::::::::::Obviously not something he is famous for, but might be nice to find out. Did want to ask, or should I? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:11, 25 June 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::::::You can ask. IGAEB (talk) 16:11, 25 June 2026 (UTC)
