Adding categories to BLPs

Hi. Please read WP:BLPCAT ↗ before continuing to add categories to biographies. Note particularly "Caution should be used with content categories that suggest a person has a poor reputation". Categories should also not be added to article that contain nothing to verify that they are appropriate or accurate. Absence of any mention of the categorisation also strongly suggests that is is not defining ↗ and therefore should be avoided.

Thanks. --<span style="color: green;">Escape Orbit</span> (Talk) ↗ 14:51, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

:I have some bad news. There's a Category:Golden Raspberry Award winners. I'm not sure if you're aware, but the Golden Raspberry Awards are for the ''worst'' in film, meaning that anyone eligible for that category (i.e. anyone who has won a Golden Raspberry Award for worst in film, e.g. Jerry Springer, et. al.) won for a bad performance or direction or screenplay, etc. If the mere presence of Category:Golden Raspberry Award winners suggests that Jerry Springer has a poor reputation, then the same must be said for Ben Affleck, Halle Berry, Marlon Brando, Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper, Charlton Heston, Nicole Kidman, George Lucas, Ronald McDonald, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Al Pacino, Eddie Redmayne, and the rest of the inhabitants of that category. If that's the case, then it brings into question the reason for the very existence of the category in the first place.

:But if the category is indeed allowed to exist (as it seems to be for the other aforementioned Razzie winners), then we have to ask if any of these winners can be "defined" as a Razzie winner. Leonardo DiCaprio, for example, is defined by his performances and the general recognition that he is a great actor. His Academy Award win for Best Actor is part of that definition. Would he also be "defined" by his Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Screen Couple? If not, then why allow him to inhabit the category? If Prince would not be "defined" by his Razzie wins for Worst Actor and Worst Director, then why allow him to inhabit the category? Even Uwe Boll and Pia Zadora wouldn't be "defined" by their Razzie wins but rather by their contributions to film, such as they are. If that's the case, then it brings into question the reason for the very existence of the category in the first place.

:But if the category is indeed allowed to exist (as it seems to be for the other aforementioned Razzie winners), then surely a navbox (such as the navbox for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star) at the bottom of an article (such as the article for the winner of the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Star Jerry Springer) would be enough to warrant the addition of the corresponding category to the article.

:Also, the category is absolutely supported within the article for Alan Menken ↗, complete with sources and navbox. All of that information was in the article when I added the category, so I don't know why you yourself said otherwise and reverted it. -IJVin (talk) 07:20, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

::"''it brings into question the reason for the very existence of the category in the first place''." - Indeed it does and I would argue that the category is uncalled for because it fails to define ↗ most people.
::There are some actors who may be defined ↗ as "Razzie award winner", but for most of those whose article has this cat, they are not. So I would suggest that this category is misused on most biographies ↗ and this is not what categories are intended to do. Seriously, no-one and no reliable source has ''ever'' defined Stevie Wonder ↗ as a "Razzie award winner". And so categorising his biography in this manner, even if it is mentioned and sourced on the article (which it isn't), is not justified.
::I know you mean well by adding this to bios, but its existence, and use on other articles, does not justify its use on other articles. --<span style="color: green;">Escape Orbit</span> (Talk) ↗ 19:21, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

:::Has a reliable source ever defined Pia Zadora as a Razzie winner? Or George Lucas? Or ''Marlon Brando''? If they're included in the category, then Stevie Wonder, et. al. should be as well, at least until the category is deleted. -IJVin (talk) 21:30, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
::::If there are categories on biography articles that are unsourced, or not even mentioned in the article, then please do remove them. A failure to source, or including non-defining categories, on some articles is not a reason to have it also done on others. Thanks. --<span style="color: green;">Escape Orbit</span> (Talk) ↗ 17:16, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Sundayclose (talk) 16:34, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
:::::May I edit your scolding, pretty please? You wrote "if" instead of "of." Considering my edits since January 25, 2022 have been related to formatting (italicizing titles, adding or clarifying links, changing verb tenses regarding a currently running series from future to present), I can only assume that those sorts of things now require discussion. Is it OK that I italicized and linked the titles of the TV show ''Lost'' and the graphic novel ''Watchmen'' on the page Elaine Lee ↗? Should I have run that by you, Sundayclose? Is that sort of unsourced formatting alright after I did a Bad Thing by placing Golden Raspberry Award winners in Category:Golden Raspberry Award winners? Maybe you ''should'' ban me from editing. Who knows what kind of formatting I could wantonly correct in the future if I'm left unleashed? -IJVin (talk) 06:06, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

:Remember when you told me not to edit and then I edited some formatting mistakes without asking you and that was so heinous that you gave me a '''final warning'''? That's why I was asking if I could edit some more. I didn't want to break the rules that you laid down, especially since you were so adamant about how I had fixed some italicization and capitalization. Am I allowed to edit formatting mistakes or not? After all, you gave me a '''final warning''' for doing exactly that. Pls respond senpai. -IJVin (talk) 20:35, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
::Also, sorry about the harassment. I can't imagine how annoying it must be to get notifications about '''final warning'''s regarding basic grammatical edits. -IJVin (talk) 20:40, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Christopher Columbus

I noticed that you have removed the category Monuments and memorials to Christopher Columbus from a number of articles about statues of the man, such as here. ↗ Can you explain why? I don't understand. Thanks. --Slugger O&#39;Toole (talk) 13:10, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

:I'm sorry, I should have explained. The statues are already in the Category:Statues of Christopher Columbus, which is itself within the Category:Monuments and memorials to Christopher Columbus. If an article is in a subcategory, then it is necessarily already in the super-category and placing it in the super-category is redundant. As an analogy, if the article for the TV show ''The Good Place'' is in the Category:American fantasy television series‎‎, then should it also be in the Category:American speculative fiction television series when the former is contained within the latter? Again, I should have discussed this prior to my actions. I'm sorry. IJVin (talk) 18:50, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Hallo, Patricia Benoit (director) ↗ is on my watch list so I noticed your recent category change.

Please note that :Category:American women screenwriters ↗ is a non-diffusing subcategory of :Category:American screenwriters ↗, so that this article should also be in :Category:American screenwriters ↗ or one of its subcategories. I have added her to :Category:21st-century American screenwriters ↗. I note that :Category:American women television writers ↗ and :Category:American male television writers ↗ are both also non-diffusing, though curiously, and inconsistently, :Category:American male screenwriters ↗ is not (probably a mistake which ought to be changed).

I see you have been doing a lot of work on articles in these categories, and encourage you to go back and add people to appropriate missing categories, such as the "by-century" subcategories. British vs English

This excess of tribalism must stop. Do not change British to English without strong reasons, strong enough to be clear from the article. A birthplace within the English part of Britain is not that reason. —David Eppstein (talk) 07:13, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

:How about if they're referred to in the article or categories as English or English-born (etc.), then that means they're English (etc.) emigrants. -IJVin (talk) 07:37, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

::English-born does not even imply that they are British citizens, necessarily. This sort of non-source-based inference has no place on Wikipedia, and especially not on biographies of living people ↗. —David Eppstein (talk) 07:43, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

:::What about when the article and its categories explicitly call the subject English or Scottish, etc.? -IJVin (talk) 07:49, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
