Costa Rica 26'

Hello, Japemizen627.

If you have any concerns regarding the Costa Rican delegate, please continue the discussion on the talk page of the Miss Universe 2026 article rather than through repeated reverts.

I have already explained my reasoning. However, if you disagree with my interpretation or believe a different approach is more appropriate, please feel free to open a discussion thread on the talk page so that other editors can review the matter and help reach a consensus.

Thank you. RaSriAiem (talk) 07:02, 6 June 2026 (UTC)

:Using well-constructed language does not mean I used AI. It means I took the time to think through my argument carefully and expressed it clearly.
:Anyways, understood, and I appreciate the clarification. I will continue the discussion there as suggested.
:For context, my concern stems from a formatting inconsistency within the same table — Costa Rica and Colombia's 2022 representatives are both listed as 'Maria Fernanda', while this entry uses 'Mariale,' a portmanteau of 'Maria' and 'Alejandra.' It is also worth noting that Colombia's representative is commonly known as 'Mafe,' yet that entry remains unchanged. If COMMONNAME is the standard being applied, it should be applied uniformly across all entries regardless of year, not selectively to entries added after a certain point.
:I will try to open a thread on the Miss Universe 2026 talk page so other editors can weigh in and help reach a consensus on the appropriate formatting standard for all entries.
:Thank you. Japemizen627 (talk) 10:15, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
::To be honest, I do not know what happened during the editing discussions in the 2022 article that led to the apparent departure from WP. The principle itself was already being applied long before then. It is also possible that subsequent edits and reverts resulted in the version of the article that we see today, including cases such as Mafe and other contestants in 2022.
::As far as I can remember, contestants such as Miss USA 2021 and Miss Chile 2025 were identified by their common names rather than their full legal names (for example, Ellen and María Ignacia). Likewise, throughout many editions of the Miss Universe articles from 1952 onward, common names have frequently been used for contestants from various countries and territories, including Taiwan, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore.
::The use of common names has also resulted in shortened forms being used for some contestants. For example, María Gabriela Lacerda and Ana Gabriela Villanueva have often been identified as "Gaby" because that is the name by which they are commonly known.
::This is a complex and nuanced issue because naming conventions differ significantly from one person and culture to another. For example, delegates from Thailand or Cambodia may have nicknames, yet in many cases they are more commonly identified by their given names. Similarly, in some European countries, such as Iceland or Denmark, individuals with multiple given names are often referred to primarily by their first name.
::For that reason, I do not believe there can be a single rigid rule that applies equally to every contestant. Each case should be considered based on how the individual is commonly identified in reliable sources and in public usage.
::In the case of Mariale, the name appears to be used consistently by news outlets, people around her, and by the contestant herself. For that reason, my view is that "Mariale" is the most appropriate name to use. It is the name by which the public most commonly recognizes her, and it also reflects the name she personally uses in her public identity. RaSriAiem (talk) 10:35, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
::: I raised this concern because I noticed what appeared to be an inconsistency in the table rather than any opposition to COMMONNAME itself. My intention was never to argue against the policy but to understand why it was being applied to some entries and not others. I now understand that those older entries may simply be a product of inconsistent editing over time rather than intentional precedent.
::: Thank you for the thorough explanation. I understand the reasoning better now. If COMMONNAME is the prevailing standard, I would only suggest that older entries like Maria Fernanda and Mafe be reviewed under the same standard eventually for consistency. I will defer to whatever the community decides on the Miss Universe 2026 ↗ talk page. Japemizen627 (talk) 12:53, 6 June 2026 (UTC)
