Scones/Buiscut issue on the Honey page
You should probably address the issue on Honey's talk page if they change it back. I know it seems ridiculous but there are some people are absurd about minor changes like that and will insist it be kept as "scones". I agree, they're different though. Date for gun install photo
I see that you are interested in the 12"/45 and have used a photo of one of them being installed on the USS Connecticut ↗. As such, I am hoping that you have access to reference material like the source for that photo (“Battleships” by Paul Stillwell, 2001, Metro Books). The reason I am asking is because the date given for the photo doesn't make any sense: the ''Connecticut'' was at sea with the Great White Fleet ↗ at the time, hardly a good time for mounting heavy weapons!
Can you confirm that the source (if you have access to it) actually states that date for the photo? Thanks. Mmccalpin (talk) 16:25, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject ↗! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box ↗ points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box ↗ is updated very frequently. You can [{{fullurl:Template:WPMILHIST Announcements|action=watch}} watchlist it] if you are interested, or you can add it directly to your user page by copying the following: {{tl|WPMILHIST Announcements}}.
- Important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page ↗; it is highly recommended that you [{{SERVER}}{{localurl:Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history|action=watch}} watchlist it].
- The project has several departments ↗, which handle article quality assessment ↗, detailed article and content review ↗, writing contests ↗, and article logistics ↗.
- We have a number of task forces ↗ that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
- We've developed a style guide ↗ that covers article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
- If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention ↗, as well as a number of review alerts ↗ and copy-editing alerts ↗.
- The project has a stress hotline ↗ available for your use.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask any of the project coordinators ↗ or any other experienced member of the project, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome, and we are looking forward to seeing you around! Abraham, B.S. (talk) 01:19, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:UB 64 pic.jpg)
25px ↗ Thanks for uploading ''':File:UB 64 pic.jpg ↗'''. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use ↗. However, it is currently orphaned ↗, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back ↗ if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media ↗).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions ↗" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. US 12" 45 caliber gun
Hi, I was reading the article that you've substantially built on the US Navy 12"/45 guns. Great stuff! I did notice an error thoigh and fixed. Only one of the Greek battleships lost her 12" guns to coastal artillery. The other retained hers for gunnery training and took them to the bottom of the harbor when she was sunk. See photo at: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/h54000/h54430.jpg ↗ Much of this is really muddy pardon the pun. --Kevin Murray (talk) 02:21, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

6"/53 caliber guns
Thank you for your edits on subject article. I don't doubt all three classes were designed to use the guns. Campbell indicates the guns installed on the cruisers were guns built for the battleships and battle cruisers. Do you have a source indicating the guns were specifically built for the cruisers? Thewellman (talk) 05:11, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
: Hello Thewellman, I do not have a source that indicates that the guns installed on the ''Omahas'' were built specifically for those ships. What I have found is at least one primary source (1922 House Subcommittee Hearings on Naval Appropriations), which makes clear that the 6"/53s were ''not'' built for any one ship or class of ships, but instead as one large order, to be used indiscriminately on the three classes of ships as they needed them. See here ↗ (specifically pages 474 and 475) for the source. This makes sense when you think about it, as all three classes were being built at the same time.
: What does seem to be the case is that once the ''South Dakotas'' and ''Lexingtons'' were stopped, the Navy ceased building additional 6"/53s, because they suddenly had a larger number than were needed to complete the ''Omahas''. But that does not imply that these were guns "destined" for those other classes, since they would have been sent wherever they were needed while the ships were being built. In fact, when you consider that when the ''South Dakotas'' were canceled the most-advanced of those ships was only 38.5% complete, while ''Omaha'' herself was 95% complete, it is hard to see how (at least in the case of ''Omaha'') she could possibly have been in a position to need to "borrow" guns from one of the other classes.
: I do not have access to John Campbell's book, so do not know the provenance of his statement -- if you happen to have it, it would be interesting to see whether he cites a primary source for his assertion. In any event, my main concern is to avoid wording in the article that somehow suggests the ''Omahas'' were designed (or redesigned) for the purpose of making use of discarded guns, which is not the case. Best, 16:45, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Hopefully avoiding vthe Iron Law of nitpickin
Hi Jrt989, just a quick question on your grammar edit of the Rosecrans article.
You changed " a third of his army was ..." to " a third of his army were ..."
From my understanding, ''third'''s treatment as singular or plural varies on whether the noun it is referring to is singular or plural. I understand ''army'' is singular as ''armies'' would be plural. I suggest either reverting your edit or changing ''army'' to ''armies''. Now, I think the first course may be the better option because Rosecrans only commanded the Army vof the Cumberland. And again, I know I might be tempting fate by running afoul of the iron law of nitpicking in that, "You are never more likely to make a grammatical error than when correcting someone else's grammar." Anyways, just asking in good faith.Take care and have a good day. Boo Boo (talk) 19:23, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
: Happy to respond, and I appreciate the question rather than a peremptory revert! I made this change because the sentence in question states that "Rosecrans AND a third of his army" were swept from the field, not just that a portion of his army alone was swept from the field. If it was the latter, I agree that the proper formulation would be "a third of his army WAS swept from the field."
:In other words, because two things (Rosecrans being one, and his army the other) were swept from the field, the plural past tense is appropriate, rather than the singular. It is the same as if the sentence read, "Rosecrans and his dog were swept from the field." In that case, it would clearly be incorrect to say that "Rosecrans and his dog was swept from the field." Let me know if you disagree. Jrt989 (talk) 20:52, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
::And presto, I have succumbed to the Iron law of nitpicking. Such is life. Yeah, dang, poor attention to detail. Oof!Boo Boo (talk) 23:02, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
