Introduction to contentious topics

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit <strong>carefully</strong> and <strong>constructively</strong>, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

The article is not EC protected because only parts of the article which relate to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly construed, are covered by ECR, and you were notified by the edit notice before editing the article.

For that article, you may edit the rest of the article, but you cannot touch any part that is related to the conflict until you are extended confirmed. This doens't matter whether the edit is good or not. You are only allowed to make straightfoward edit requests (like change X to Y) in the talk page.

If you listen to the provided audio, the voice is clearly saying {{IPAc-en|ˈ|ɡ|ɒ|θ|ən|b|ɜːr|ɡ}} not {{IPAc-en|ˈ|ɡ|ɔː|θ|ən|b|ɜːr|ɡ}}. Anecdotally, i have not heard it pronounced {{respell|GAW|thən|burg}} at all. I suggest you may want to revert yourself so we don't hold incorrect information ~ '''Lindsay'''<sup>'''H ↗'''ello ↗</sup> 08:19, 2 January 2025 (UTC)

:The voice is indeed saying {{IPAc-en|ˈ|ɡ|ɒ|θ|ən|b|ɜːr|ɡ}} because of their accent. Whoever recorded that has the {{sc2|COT–CAUGHT}} merger ↗. Someone with a distinct {{sc2|CAUGHT}} phoneme, written {{respell|AW}} in the pronunciation respelling, is gonna keep that phoneme in their speech, and it should be written separately in the pronunciation key.

::Anecdotally, I have not heard any other pronunciation than {{IPAc-en|ˈ|m|æ|l|m|ə|audio=En-Malmö.flac}} by any English speaker who is familiar with the city. It's only ever referred to as {{IPAc-en|ˈ|m|æ|l|m|oʊ}} by people who are unfamiliar with the city, just reading the word as if it was written with English orthographical rules.
