Wikipedia and copyright
30px|link=|alt=Control copyright icon ↗ Hello Maple leaf eh, and welcome to Wikipedia. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.
- You can only copy/translate a ''small'' amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation mark ↗s (") and a cited source. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content ↗ in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners ↗, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information ''in your own words and structure'', in proper paraphrase ↗. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems ↗, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing ↗. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue ↗.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify ↗ information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research ↗.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights ↗. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste ↗.
- If ''you'' own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you ''may'' be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials ↗.
- In ''very rare cases'' (that is, for sources that are public domain ↗ or compatibly licensed ↗), it ''may'' be possible to include greater portions of a source text. ''However'', please seek help at the help desk ↗ before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources ''may not'' be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you ''do'' confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism ↗ for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia ↗.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked ↗ from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Connormah (talk) 23:08, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Sherbrooke Hussars ↗, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Authie ↗. The edit is required to identify a battle that occurred in the village of Authie in the context of the name as a proper noun. The original link to the village is benign and unimaginative. What happened in that village is important to the veterans of The Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment in 1944.
Non-free rationale for File:D2 MOW-OUI 028.pdf
64px|left|alt=|link= ↗
Thanks for uploading or contributing to ''':File:D2 MOW-OUI 028.pdf ↗'''. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria ↗, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page ↗, and edit it to include a non-free rationale ↗.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions ↗" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion ↗. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion ↗ and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page ↗. In response to the email you sent me
I meant no offence by changing the word 'honourary', and I did not ignore the fact that the article was written in Canadian english. You listed 'armour, colour, centre, and honour' as examples that people had tried to change in the past but 'honourary' is different because it only occurs in Canadian english and even then is only considered an 'alternative spelling' to the preferred 'honorary'. I have seen older editing disputes related to the word ruled in favour of 'honorary' and I should point out that 'honourary' is included in the Wikipedia Typo Team's list of common misspellings ↗.
Here ↗ is a link to a Canadian government website stating that 'honorary' is the preferred adjectival form of 'honour'.
Also, I perceived some hostility in your email and I'd just like to say I understand your point of view, and remind you that we are on the same team in that making Wikipedia better is a shared objective.
Please respond on my talk page if you feel the need to do so.

George Harold Baker ↗
Hi, Maple leaf. I removed your contributions at George Harold Baker ↗ Samuel Simpson Sharpe ↗ because they weren't cited to a reliable source. Per WP:UGC ↗, user-generated content like that at WikiTree isn't robust enough to be used as a source on Wikipedia (unless it's WP:ABOUTSELF ↗). In order to re-add that information, you would need something like a contemporary newspaper, a history book, some sort of document from the Canadian military, or just anything that's reliable ↗. As an example, you could use this source ↗ from The Canadian Press. TheTechnician27 (Talk page) 21:55, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
