County of North Yorkshire ↗



You reverted a previous edit of mine to this redir with the comment ''County of North Yorkshire is the legal name of the non-metropolitan county (UA area), not the ceremonial county''. Be that as it may, it is clear that many readers (and some editors) would read ''County of North Yorkshire'' literally as the county (which includes York and much of Tees-side) rather than the unitary authority area (which doesn't). For example, your reversion caused our article on Leon Brittan to say that he been appointed to a peerage in a unitary authority that didn't exist at the time the peerage was granted, and indeed not until 5 years after he was dead. The best way to prevent confusion like this is to make County of North Yorkshire ↗ a dab page, and that is what I have done. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 17:22, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

:Actually the County of North Yorkshire was created in 1974, and all that happened in 2023 was that the districts were abolished and their powers and functions transferred to the County. The County did not change. So the article on Leon Brittan ↗ was correct, and the reference to County of North Yorkshire was to the non-metropolitan county as it existed in 2000, and still exists today.
:I agree that it is confusing. I live in North Yorkshire, and for local people we pay our council tax to the county. I have never heard anyone (outside WP) referring to the UA area as a "district", it is always the county. We now have a combined authority for "York and North Yorkshire", which implies that York is not in North Yorkshire. It depends on what you mean by "North Yorkshire". Most people, if they think about it at all, probably know that Middlesborough is in North Yorkshire but not in the county. The nerds know that it is the "county for the purposes of lieutenancy". My view is that the best way of minimising confusion is to explain the different senses/boundaries in a single article for North Yorkshire - as we had before the council became a UA. That is also how we deal with administrative counties ↗, and it still works well for e.g. Somerset ↗, and East Riding of Yorkshire ↗. Mhockey (talk) 18:54, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
