Styles

Hi Michael, welcome to the wiki. I notice that you have added some prenomial styles to a few articles. Just so you are aware, this is a touchy subject around here, with many people outright opposed to their inclusion in the first line of the article, rather than mentioned later on. In anycase, the prenomial stylists seem to have prevailed for the moment, but there are still a few guidlines. First, the bolded part of the title should really only be the article title, or something that might reasonably be a redirect — so don't bold Honorable ↗, or the postnomial initials, etc. Also, simple courtesy titles like professor ↗, or Mr. ↗ are generally not included. Also, don't put wiki links within parts of the title that are bolded. So '''Sir Wombat Twitworth''', not '''Sir ↗ Wombat Twitworth'''. Note that Sir is a bit of a special case, as it formally becomes part of the persons name, and so does tend to be bolded but not linked. Again, welcome! Fawcett5 16:46, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Titles

I've noticed you added the title 'Sir' to the 1st Duke of Wellington's article, which was reverted by the admin Proteus. Please note that a 'Duke' is higher in rank than a 'Knight' therefore the 'Sir' is no longer used in his title. 62.252.96.16 00:50, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia style

I see that you have been modifying a number of articles to add prenomials and postnomials. You should probably check out the Manual of Style ↗, which says:

:If possible, make the title the subject of the first sentence of the article (as opposed to putting it in the predicate). In any case, the title should appear as early as possible in the article — preferably in the first sentence.
:The first time the title is mentioned in the article, put it in bold using three apostrophes. Here's an example: '''article title''' produces article title. You should not put links in the title.
Since "The Honourable", "PC", "MP", "BA", "CC", LLB" and so on, are '''not''' part of the article title, they should not be in bold. This is not my preference: this is part of the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

categories and their sub-cats

Hello. just wanted to point out that the convention on wiki is to not include an article in a category where it is also in that category's sub-category. (for instance where Christopher Plummer ↗ is already catted under :Category:Torontonians ↗ he need not and conventionally is not be catted under :Category:People from Ontario ↗). the idea is to keep both the length of individual cats from becoming too long and to keep the number of cats per article at a reasonable length. But there ''is'' a link on the page (though for some reason it was in slightly the wrong place; I've moved it), just as there is on most articles about Oxford Colleges. Senators

Michael, "Senator" is a job title. I do not believe that ex-Senators continue to use the title. In any event, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) ↗ does not indicate that this sort of title should be in opening of the article. The US presidential articles, e.g., Jimmy Carter ↗, Ronald Reagan ↗, George H. W. Bush ↗, do not have "President" before the names even though former presidents continue to use the title. :Sure Michael. Its in WP:MOSBIO ↗. Right now it only applies to royalty. Previously a bitter edit war had erupted over whether to use styles in royal articles. (It was one of the worst edit wars in WP history and spread over large numbers of articles.) I proposed a compromise which to my amazement won 95% agreement from all sides. Basically how it works is that styles feature in articles (keeping the styles side happy) but not at the top (keeping the anti-styles people happy). Instead a styles template is added into each article listing the diplomatic style, alternative style and spoken style used. As a result styles have been deleted by all sides from all articles on royalty and the template installed. It is now an automatic formula that is used. Where styles appear in articles they are instantly deleted by whomever finds them, and replaced by the template (an infobox). I don't think it is usual to include academic degrees (''e.g.'' Ph.D.) in the first line of a biographical article. I don't know what the policy is for honorary degrees, but it is certainly not conventional for academic degrees (see, ''e.g.'', Bill Frist ↗, Rush D. As category pages can not be ''moved'' like other pages, it is not possible to merge the edit histories on them, this the reason I posted the attributions on the talk page. Capital letters

Hey Michael, I have been noticing alot of new hockey player pages you have been creating and that is great! However, many of your articles are using captial letters incorrectly. "He" and "His" don't need a captial "H" in the middle of a sentence. You've done this on Gerry Ehman ↗, Bill Dineen (ice hockey) ↗, and Larry Hillman ↗ among others. Also, you have failed to use commas where needed. You can see some of the corrections I've made on Steve Black ↗. I'm just trying to make Wikipedia a better place for everyone with articles that are clearly defined and readable. Please check punctuation and spelling before submitting the final page and feel free to check out the Manual of Style ↗. But good work and good research on the articles you've written! Walter "Gunzo" Humeniuk

Hey Michael Drew, found this info on Walter (sometimes Wally) and thought you could use it. Not sure why he was called "Gunzo". The first link is here ↗ with info in the about section. Also found this .pdf that has info and a award that is given out as the "Gunzo" award. It also says the "late" Walter Humeniuk, but I couldn't find a date for when he passed away. That .pdf is here ↗, an the article is about three pages down. Butch Keeling

Hi, can you please change the name of the Keeling article back to Melville "Butch" Keeling? I am well aware that Melville was his real name but he was well known by the nickname Butch. I have spoken about him with his sister (who is still alive) and she confirms that. Also, if you look at his gravestone (a picture of it is accessible through the sixth reference link on the Keeling page) you will see that even there he is listed as Melville "Butch" Keeling. Charles Sylvestre?

Hello Michael Drew. I am wondering why Father Charles Sylvestre would be listed with the article on '''Deaths in 2007'''. What is the criteria for adding people like him, i.e., people who did very bad things and went to jail (in this case sentenced to serve three years). I don't disagree with adding him to the Deaths article, but I just wonder why he qualifies. Perhaps in this case, you listed him with the Deaths just because of his notoriety. Here's part of my confusion: recently, a Death listing for Jennifer Strange, the lady who died last week of water poisoning as a result of a radio contest, was deleted and then re-added from the Deaths article; there was confusion whether she was considered a worthy listing. 2002 Stanley Cup Engravings

Hey Micheal Drew, first off I found info about Bill Tibbs from your last question. Here ↗ is his info on Hockey Database. Looks like he was a backup goalie to Sawchuck and maybe just called up for a game or two. Also found this: ''In the team-by-team sections, there is a one- or two-sentence explanation of every person whose name is on the Stanley Cup. The 2001-2002 Detroit Red Wings included Nancy Beard's name. She was a secretary in the team's offices.'' at the end of an article here ↗ about Nancy Beard.

As for your question about the engraving on the cup, I found this site ↗ with "Cup-winning rosters" but I think this might just be people on the ice when they won. I'm still looking for a picture of the 2001-02 Detroit Red Wings engraving on the cup as I'm sure there are more people than those listed on the site I gave you. ::Originally a person's membership to a privy council was intended only for the reign of the sovereign, who had made the appointment, however by convention it was rather for the person's lifetime (a following sovereign was considered to have declared a reappointment) and the actually end of a membership came only by resignation, expulsion or of course death.
::The Acts of Union 1707 ↗ united the Privy Councils of England and Scotland and consequently their former members sat together in the new formed Privy Council of Great Britain. While with the Act of Union 1801 ↗ all members of the latter privy council became automatically members of the succeeding Privy Council of the United Kingdom (it was rather a change of the name, then of the institution itself), the Privy Council of Ireland however ceased not to exist and is today still extant.

Glenys Kinnock

Hello

I'm not sure why you've added the letters 'PC' after the name of Glenys Kinnock. She is not, as far as I am aware, a member of the Privy Council, and nor do I see any reason why she ought to become one. According to the Full List of Cabinet Members ↗ she is not a member of the Cabinet and will not attend Cabinet meetings. Technically, as the wife of a Baron, she is The Rt Hon The Baroness Kinnock (although she does not use her title), and she will now be elevated to the peerage in her own right (and presumably will use her new title). However, her style of Rt Hon is derived from her being a peeress, not from being a Privy Counsellor. Do you know something that I don't?

Digby Jones, Baron Jones of Birmingham ↗

I am similarly confused about Digby Jones, Baron Jones of Birmingham ↗. The webpage Her Majesty's Government ↗ says that Her Majesty had signified her intention of conferring a peerage on Digby Jones, but he does not appear in the list of those whom she approved to be sworn of the Privy Council. I do not believe that he attended Cabinet, so again I can't see why he would have become a Privy Counsellor. Of course, I appreciate that anybody can be appointed a Privy Counsellor, but it seems unlikely that the honour would have been conferred on Digby Jones.--Oxonian2006 (talk) 23:18, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

How about Gareth Thomas ↗? You have added the style The Rt Hon, proper to a Privy Counsellor, and placed him in the PC category, yet I don't think he is a PC. See HM Government ↗, where he is called 'Mr Gareth Thomas MP', not 'The Rt Hon Gareth Thomas MP'. Finally, Gareth Thomas MP ↗.

Dear Michael Drew

I hope you don't consider it very rude of me, but I am reverting your deletion of all my messages that I posted here yesterday. I was drawing your attention to the fact that you appear to have introduced a number of rather important errors into several articles. You have not responded to my observations and you have not made any amendements to the articles in question. You cannot simply go around Wikipedia making what appear to be mistakes and then try to deny that somebody has brought the fact to your attention. I was wondering whether you might have been able to draw my attention to sources of which I was ignorant which might have demonstrated that you had in fact been right to make the changes that you made. If there are no such sources I should like to arrive at a consensus before reverting your edits. I also thought it wise to bring these apparent errors to your attention as you appear to have been under the misapprehension that all members of HM Government in the UK are automatically appointed Privy Counsellors. I am not sure why you have added the above category to an article that alreay had the category "Queen's Counsel 1597-1800", which should be a subcategory of the other. Privy Council appointments

The people announced on the dissolution honours list are not yet privy counsellors. For the moment, it has been announced that the Queen has "approve[d] that the undermentioned be sworn of Her Majesty’s most honourable Privy Council". Any award or honour he's received that's worth mentioning in our article at all will have a proper reliable source ↗ out there for it (i.e. not just his own website), and any such section should be written in complete sentences and paragraphs rather than as bullet points. Freedoms – RAF stations

Hi, thanks for your contributions to some of the RAF station pages. A list perhaps is not the best option for displaying such information when there aren't likely to be more than one or two freedoms granted to most stations. Normally such information is mentioned in the history section. Also see MOS:BOLD ↗ for use of bold and MOS:FLAG ↗ for flag use. I'm just noting that this concern is still relevant. See WP:ES ↗ for more information on edit summaries. Edits like this ↗ could use some explanation. This article title appears to have been changed from an appropriate one (List of...) to a more unclear one (Honors...), and with this edit to an unclear one using the wrong national variety of English (Honours...).
