Your reverts to navboxes
Hi, I know you meant well but please stop reverting my navbox edits. I have been trying to clear up an almighty mess caused by another new editor, where they have been splitting navboxes by decade unnecessarily and adding improper links against years that are not specific to the subject. '''--<span style="background:yellow; color:red;;">wooden</span><span style="background:yellow; color:blue;;">superman</span>''' 06:39, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
:See User talk:Yamato2#Years in award navboxes '''--<span style="background:yellow; color:red;;">wooden</span><span style="background:yellow; color:blue;;">superman</span>''' 06:41, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
::I don’t mind the removal of links to specific years. However, I am strongly opposed to removing the decade split. The decade split makes it much easier to navigate. When an award such as the Hugo award has 70+ entries, splitting by decade is an appropriate way to make the template functional. Having a list with no divisions makes the template clunky and defeats its navigational purposes. If you are strongly opposed to the decade split, I think that this discussion would be a good candidate for moving to MOS:NOVEL, as it affects multiple different templates in the literature space. Michelangelo1992 (talk) 12:24, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
:::The decade split is arbitrary and makes the navbox larger than necessary. If the years are clearly noted then it's superfluous. '''--<span style="background:yellow; color:red;;">wooden</span><span style="background:yellow; color:blue;;">superman</span>''' 13:58, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
::Also, per WP:BRD ↗, you should not have undone my edits. I’m asking you to self-revert while we have this discussion. Michelangelo1992 (talk) 12:28, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
:::i was already reverting bold edits made inappropriately by another editor. '''--<span style="background:yellow; color:red;;">wooden</span><span style="background:yellow; color:blue;;">superman</span>''' 13:59, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
::::If you look at the past edits for the Hugo and Locus templates, you’ll see that the decade split has been in place for many years. Therefore, your edits were not just reversions. You’ve removed the links to “Year in Literature” (which is fine IMO) but also the decade splits, which were not new additions. Michelangelo1992 (talk) 14:10, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
:::::As I said above, the years are given, so splitting by decade is arbitrary and superfluous and forces the navbox to be larger than necessary. '''--<span style="background:yellow; color:red;;">wooden</span><span style="background:yellow; color:blue;;">superman</span>''' 14:23, 21 March 2026 (UTC)
::::::Ok, that is a separate issue from reverting new edits which added "year in literature" links. The templates started off with splits by decade. (The Hugo templates have been that way since at least 2010, which I can see by looking at old versions). You changed the template to remove a long-standing feature. I reverted it. Per BRD, we should leave the original format in place while attempting to get consensus on this issue. I would ask for you to revert your changes. Then, start a discussion, likely at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Novels ↗ since this affects multiple pages, to determine if the community prefers the splits by decade or not. Question
Hey,
I get that you took the references off the anthologies on Vajra Chandrasekera's page because they don't need them. That's fine. All cool. I understood the reasoning. I added back the urls to the books to give them external links.
But I have a question:
I had added references with Anthologies to both Ken Liu's bibliography and Sam Miller's page. Do you want me to go pull the references off and do the same thing? Because I can. I just didn't want to get my head ripped off by a different admin for not adding references.
Thanks,
OrbitingJupiter OrbitingJupiter (talk) 16:00, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
:Hello! I am actually not an admin - just a normal editor highly active in the SFF literary space. Generally, listing a work in a bibliography does not strictly require a citation. The factual claim is that "X author published Y book", and the existence of the published book itself serves as the citation.
:For your specific question, you can read Wikipedia:WikiProject Bibliographies#Author bibliographies ↗, specifically the section on book links. Generally most editors will only add external links if the book is freely available online, which is not often applicable to recent books.
:Thanks again for your additions to several pages - I have appreciated your contributions so far. I hope you never get your "head ripped off" by anyone here. It can be tough to learn all the policies and quirks, but I hope you stick around and keep up your contributions! Michelangelo1992 (talk) 16:14, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
::Okay. Thank you. Appreciate it. And thank you for your kind words!OrbitingJupiter (talk) 16:22, 19 May 2026 (UTC)
