Frederick Kerr ↗

Early life

Frederick Kerr was born Frederick Grinham Keen on 11 October 1858 in London ↗, the elder son of Grinham Keen, a solicitor. He was educated at Charterhouse School ↗ before going up to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge ↗, where he read law. After graduating from Cambridge ↗ in 1880, he enrolled at the Inner Temple ↗ with the intention of becoming a barrister, but left shortly afterwards to pursue a career as an actor.<ref>http://venn.lib.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/search-2017c.pl?sur=Keen&suro=w&fir=&firo=c&cit=&cito=c&c=all&z=all&tex=&sye=1877&eye=1880&col=all&maxcount=50</ref><ref name="NYT">"FRED&mdash;THE KERRS&mdash;GEOFFREY" New York Times Drama/Music/Fashion/Screen, November 7, 1920, page 88 (available online at the New York Times archive ↗</ref>{{reflist-talk}}

Theatre career

He went to New York City ↗ in 1880 and worked as a sketch artist, when sheer chance turned him into an actor. He was living in a boarding house on 7th Avenue, where a number of theatrical people also lived, among them Henry Miller ↗, who eventually became his manager. Osmond Tearle, an actor living there, heard from his own producer that an Englishman was needed for a production of ''The School for Scandal ↗''. Tearle recruited Frederick, who got the part in January 1882 (which is also likely the moment he took the stage surname of "Kerr"). He appeared in several more plays in New York City that year, but left for Britain to appear in a London play in December 1882, after which he joined the company at the Royal Court Theatre ↗ managed by John Clayton and Arthur Cecil ↗. Over the next fifty years, he travelled back and forth across the Atlantic ↗ several times for theatrical work both in New York City and in London.<ref name="NYT">"FRED&mdash;THE KERRS&mdash;GEOFFREY" New York Times Drama/Music/Fashion/Screen, November 7, 1920, page 88 (available online at the New York Times archive ↗</ref><ref>http://venn.lib.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/search-2017c.pl?sur=Keen&suro=w&fir=&firo=c&cit=&cito=c&c=all&z=all&tex=&sye=1877&eye=1880&col=all&maxcount=50</ref>{{reflist-talk}}

David Ogden Stiers‎ ↗

I saw your recent additions to David Ogden Stiers‎ ↗. If you review the discussions at Talk:David Ogden Stiers‎ ↗, you will see that this specific material was much discussed, including going through the Request For Comment phase, and that the decision was made not to include it. While there has been some technical change in circumstances (in that he's now been dead long enough that the Biographies of Living Persons ↗ policies no longer apply), the material was contentious enough that it should not be readded without consensus. As such, I am undoing your additions; please do not re-add the material without first re-starting discussion on the talk page and reaching consensus. --Nat Gertler (talk) 20:18, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Removing Red Links

Hello, I've noticed you've been removing a lot of re links. Please don't do that. The red link guideline ↗ says, 'Do not remove red links unless you are certain that Wikipedia should not have an article on the subject, or if the red link could be replaced with a link to an article section where the subject is covered as part of a broader topic'.

Sometimes a red link is the result of a typo, and those should be fixed. Sometimes they're the product of an alternate spelling; this often happens with names transliterated from languages with different writing systems such as Arabic and Chinese. If the alternate spelling is one that exists other places (in other words, it might reasonably be used by someone looking for the article), then you can create a redirect ↗ from it to the article we have; it doesn't necessarily have to be changed. Sometimes I find that there's an article about a red-linked topic in another language (or several), and I add an interlanguage link to it ↗ if I think it will help our readers. If I really think that there's no chance of the link becoming an article, then I'll remove it. Most often, I leave them alone. <b style="font-family:arial;color:red">SnazzyInfinity</b> - <span style="font-family:arial;color:blue"><b>Chat?</b></span> 19:37, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Religion categories

Hi. I reverted your edit to :Cyril Cusack ↗. Religion categories are not intended to be catalogues of every adherent of a religion (or lack of one), for very good reason. WP:CAT/R ↗ and WP:BLPCAT ↗ are the applicable guidelines and policies, and the description of the Irish Roman Catholics ↗ page is also clear. Essentially, notability must derive in some part from a person's membership of a religion (or lack of one) in order to be included; it's not enough just to ''be'' a Catholic (or Muslim, or Jew, or atheist), one must have some notability because of it. Otherwise, Irish Roman Catholic cat could be applied to over 90% of Irish BLPs, rendering it meaningless. <span style="font-family:Verdana, sans-serif">Bastun</span>Ėġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! ↗ 12:56, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

:And again - the RC category is not for every member of a faith. I've reverted your edit to :Fiona Shaw ↗. Please see WP:BLPCAT ↗. <span style="font-family:Verdana, sans-serif">Bastun</span>Ėġáḍβáś₮ŭŃ! ↗ 09:40, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

Third reminder re NOTBROKEN

User:DuncanHill has politely advised you twice to stop "fixing" redirect links, per WP:NOTBROKEN ↗, but you have continued to do so, e.g. this edit ↗ at Oscar Wilde ↗ today. Seriously, please stop. I doubt the next person who sees you doing this will be generous enough to give you a fourth warning rather than taking it straight to ANI. Colin M (talk) 23:03, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Good morning, I've had to remove some information you added to James Marquand ↗ for a second time as it was not supported by citations (per WP:USI ↗). I tried to be generous leaving information for which a citation possibly could be added. If you add anything else to this page, please consider adding inline citations to support you additions. Speedy deletion ↗ nomination of :Draft:Seán Pádraig Ó Ríordáin ↗

{{Quote box|quote=<p>If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article ↗.</p><p>You may want to consider using the Article Wizard ↗ to help you create articles.</p>|width=20%|align=right}}
A tag has been placed on :Draft:Seán Pádraig Ó Ríordáin ↗ requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion ↗, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement ↗. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.dib.ie/biography/o-riordain-sean-padraig-a6432. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of ''information'', but not as a source of ''sentences''. This part is crucial: ''say it in your own words''. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators '''will be blocked from editing ↗'''.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you ''must'' verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials ↗. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission ↗ for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy ↗ for more details, or ask a question here ↗.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may '''contest the nomination''' by visiting the page ↗ and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines ↗. <!-- Template:Db-copyvio-notice --><!-- Template:Db-csd-notice-custom --> CNMall41 (talk) 19:03, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

'''Thomas Power O'Connor''', PC ↗ (5 October 1848 – 18 November 1929), known as '''T. P. O'Connor''' and occasionally as '''Tay Pay''' (mimicking the Irish pronunciation of the initials ''T. P.''), was an Irish nationalist ↗ politician ↗ and journalist who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons ↗ of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland ↗ for nearly fifty years.

Early life and education

O'Connor was born in Athlone ↗,<ref name="Griffiths">Dennis Griffiths (ed.) ''The Encyclopedia of the British Press, 1422–1992'', London & Basingstoke: Macmillan, 1992, pp.445–46</ref> County Westmeath ↗, on 5 October 1848. He was the eldest son of Thomas O'Connor, an Athlone shopkeeper, and his wife Teresa (née Power), the daughter of a non-commissioned officer in the Connaught Rangers ↗. His family were supporters of the Liberal Party ↗.<ref name="dict. of Irish Biog.">{{cite encyclopedia |url=https://www.dib.ie/biography/oconnor-thomas-power-a6618 |entry=O'Connor, Thomas Power |last=McGee |first=Owen |title=O'Connor, Thomas Power |access-date=30 August 2024 |encyclopedia=Dictionary of Irish Biography |date=2009 |doi=10.3318/dib.006618.v1 |doi-access=free}}</ref> He was educated at the College of the Immaculate Conception ↗ in Athlone, and Queen's College Galway ↗, where he won scholarships in history and modern languages and built up a reputation as an orator, serving as auditor of the college's Literary and Debating Society ↗.

Career

From 1867, O'Connor attempted unsuccessfully to gain a position in the Civil Service ↗ before working for the Royal Irish Constabulary ↗ as a reporting assistant on nationalist political demonstrations.<ref name="dict. of Irish Biog.">{{cite encyclopedia |url=https://www.dib.ie/biography/oconnor-thomas-power-a6618 |entry=O'Connor, Thomas Power |last=McGee |first=Owen |title=O'Connor, Thomas Power |access-date=30 August 2024 |encyclopedia=Dictionary of Irish Biography |date=2009 |doi=10.3318/dib.006618.v1 |doi-access=free}}</ref> He entered journalism as a junior reporter on ''Saunders' Newsletter'', a Dublin ↗ journal. In 1870, he moved to London, and was appointed a sub-editor on ''The Daily Telegraph ↗'', principally on account of the utility of his mastery of French and German in reportage of the Franco-Prussian War ↗.<ref name="Griffiths"/> He later became London correspondent for ''The New York Herald ↗''. He compiled the society magazine ''Mainly About People'' (M.A.P.) <ref>{{Cite web|url=https://newspaperarchive.com/london-mainly-about-people-may-27-1899-p-3/|title=London Mainly About People Archives, May 27, 1899, p. 3|date=27 May 1899}}</ref> from 1898 to 1911.

O'Connor was elected Member of Parliament for Galway Borough ↗ in the 1880 general election ↗, as a representative of the Home Rule League ↗ (which was under the leadership of William Shaw ↗, though virtually led by Charles Stewart Parnell ↗, who would win the party's leadership a short time later). O'Connor had been invited to stand as the Liberal ↗ candidate for the constituency on the strength of the unflattering biography of then Conservative ↗ Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli ↗ he had written in 1878. However, after being persuaded by Parnell, O'Connor stood reluctantly as an Irish party candidate. Despite opposition from Irish Catholic clergymen ↗ to the selection of the reputedly agnostic ↗ O'Connor as the Irish Nationalist ↗ candidate, he won the seat - allegedly with some support from the Irish Republican Brotherhood ↗ - because of his vocal support for the ideals of the Irish National Land League ↗. By now a permanent resident of London, who spoke with a London accent, he did not generally speak at land rallies but was appointed to the Land League executive by Parnell. He also made four visits to the U.S. to raise funds for his party from politically engaged Irish Americans ↗.<ref name="dict. of Irish Biog.">{{cite encyclopedia |url=https://www.dib.ie/biography/oconnor-thomas-power-a6618 |entry=O'Connor, Thomas Power |last=McGee |first=Owen |title=O'Connor, Thomas Power |access-date=30 August 2024 |encyclopedia=Dictionary of Irish Biography |date=2009 |doi=10.3318/dib.006618.v1 |doi-access=free}}</ref>

At the next general election in 1885 ↗, O'Connor was returned both for Galway and for the Liverpool Scotland ↗ constituencies, which had a large Irish population. He chose to sit for Liverpool, and represented that constituency in the House of Commons ↗ from 1885 until his death in 1929. He remains the only British MP from an Irish nationalist party ever to be elected to a constituency outside of the island of Ireland. O'Connor continued to be re-elected in Liverpool under this label unopposed in the 1918 ↗, 1922 ↗, 1923 ↗, 1924 ↗ and 1929 ↗ general elections, despite the declaration of a ''de facto'' Irish Republic ↗ in early 1919, and the establishment by 1921 treaty ↗ of a quasi-independent Irish Free State ↗ in late 1922.

O'Connor supported the Irish Reform Association ↗, and by the 1910s, he had come to accept the idea of partition ↗. Newspapers and journals

T. P. O'Connor founded and was the first editor of several newspapers and journals: ''The Star ↗'', the ''Weekly Sun'' (1891), ''The Sun ↗'' (1893), ''M.A.P. and T.P.'s Weekly'' (1902). In August 1906, O'Connor was instrumental in the passing by Parliament ↗ of the Musical Copyright Act 1906 ↗, also known as the T.P. O'Connor Bill, following many of the popular music writers at the time dying in poverty due to extensive piracy by gangs during the piracy crisis of sheet music in the early 20th century.<ref>Atkinson, Benedict. & Fitzgerald, Brian. Personal life

In 1885, O'Connor married Elizabeth Howard (née Paschal), a daughter of George W. Paschal, an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Arkansas ↗. Death

O'Connor fell seriously ill in 1929; a substantial collection for him was raised in the House of Commons. '''Sir Philip Crampton, 1st Baronet''', <small>FRS</small> ↗ <small>MRCSI</small> ↗ <small>MRIA</small> ↗ (7 June 1777 – 10 June 1858) was an eminent Irish ↗ surgeon and anatomist. He was President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland ↗ (RCSI) in 1811, 1820, 1844 and 1855.

Life

Crampton was born in Dublin ↗, Ireland ↗, the son of John Crampton and Anne (née Verner).<ref>Burke's Peerage, 1857: Sir Philip Crampton</ref> His father, a prosperous dentist, was a member of the Church of Ireland ↗, while his mother was Presbyterian ↗, of Ulster-Scottish ↗ descent with ancestral roots in Auchendinny ↗. He was a childhood friend of Theobald Wolfe Tone ↗, the United Irishman ↗, and a cousin, on his mother's side, of Thomas Verner, Grand Master of the Orange Order ↗. He was indentured to Solomon Richards ↗ and soon after commenced studies at the RCSI. He joined the army ↗ as an assistant surgeon. When he was appointed surgeon to the Meath Hospital ↗ in 1798 he was not yet fully qualified, and went on to graduate MD ↗ in Glasgow University ↗ in 1800 and by 1801 he was a Member of the RCSI. He was to remain in the Meath Hospital for nearly sixty years.<ref name=":0" /> A few years later he also became assistant surgeon at the Lock Hospital, Dublin ↗ and also built up a large private practice at his house in Dawson St. He joined Peter Harkan in teaching anatomy in private lectures, forming the first private school of anatomy and surgery in the city.<ref name=obit>Obituary, British Medical Journal, 26 June 1858</ref>

Cameron in his ''History of the RCSI'' notes of him: " In 1805 Crampton published an essay on Entropeon, or inversion of the eyelid, which excited considerable interest at the time. In 1813 he described a muscle in the eyes of birds, arising from the inner surface of the bony hoop which surrounds the cornea, and terminating in a circular tendon connected with the circular lamina of the cornea. By means of this muscle the lens can be so adjusted—telescoped, so to speak—as to enable it to see objects at short or long distances, as required. This muscle has been termed musculus cramptonius in honour of its discoverer".<ref name=":0">Cameron, Sir Charles A. (1886) History of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and of the Irish Schools of Medicine &c Dublin: Fannin & Co. pp. 343-344.</ref> He became a Fellow of the Royal Society ↗ (F.R.S.) in Ireland for this treatise on the construction of eyes of birds. This was later published, with other writings, in the Dublin Journal of Medical Science ↗.<ref>Dublin Journal of Medical Science, January 1839, p. 527</ref>

In 1821, together with Sir Henry Marsh ↗ (with whom he shared a mutual cousin, Philip Cecil Crampton ↗) and Dr. Charles Johnston, he founded a children's hospital in Pitt St. (now Balfe St.), the Institute for Sick Children ↗ in 1821. This hospital was the first teaching children's hospital in Ireland or Great Britain. The main objective of the hospital was to treat sick children in one of the poorest parts of Dublin, The Liberties ↗.<ref name=obit/>

He resigned the chief-surgeoncy of the Lock Hospital when he was appointed surgeon-general to the forces in Ireland. He remained as consulting surgeon to Dr Steevens' Hospital ↗ and the Dublin Lying-in Hospital ↗. He was elected President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) on four occasions. Lady Harriet Kavanagh ↗ recruited him to help support her son Arthur MacMurrough Kavanagh ↗, who was born with vestigial limbs, in living an active life. Crampton created a mechanical wheelchair for the child, who later went on to be an MP.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2021-10-04 |title=The Incredible Mr Kavanagh |url=https://turtlebunbury.com/document/arthur-kavanagh/ |access-date=2022-12-17 |website=Turtle Bunbury Irish Histories |language=en-GB}}</ref> Crampton was created a baronet ↗ on 14 March 1839.<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=19710 |date=26 February 1839 |page=398}}</ref><ref name=boy>Boylan, p. 86</ref>

He was always interested in zoological science ↗ and played an active part in founding the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland ↗ and was many times its president. In 1853, he was introduced to a large plesiosaur ↗ fossil by the Marquess of Normanby ↗ at the latter's residence, Mulgrave Castle ↗. Later that year, Crampton transferred the fossil to the Royal Zoological Society in Dublin. A decade later, after Crampton's death, the specimen was moved to the Royal Dublin Society ↗ museum and was officially described by Alexander Carte ↗ and W. H. Bailey ↗ as a new species of ''Plesiosaurus ↗''. Carte and Bailey named the species ''Plesiosaurus cramptoni ↗'' in Crampton's honour.<ref name="dict. of Irish Biog.">{{cite encyclopedia |url=https://www.dib.ie/biography/oconnor-thomas-power-a6618 |entry=Crampton, Sir Philip |last=Lunney |first=Linde |title=O'Connor, Thomas Power |access-date=23 March 2025 |encyclopedia=Dictionary of Irish Biography |date=2009 |doi=10.3318/dib.002151.v1 |doi-access=free}}</ref>

Crampton was also a member of the Royal Irish Academy ↗.<ref name="obit" /> He died at his residence, 14 Merrion Square ↗, in Dublin. By his wife, the former Selina Cannon (the daughter of an army officer whom he married on 10 May 1800, and who died on 9 April 1834 from burns she sustained in an accident), he had two sons and four daughters. He was succeeded in the title by his eldest son John, second and last Baronet.<ref>YouWho? ↗. Accessed 23 March 2025.</ref>

The Crampton Memorial

thumb|Sir Philip Crampton's memorial in Dublin ↗
The Crampton Memorial, at the junction of College Street ↗ with Pearse Street ↗ and D'Olier Street ↗, was erected from the design of John Kirk the sculptor in 1862. It was of a curious design, consisting of a bust above a fountain and surmounted by a cascade of metal foliage. This monument was locally known in the 19th century as the "water-babe",<ref>Cosgrave</ref> and later as the "cauliflower", "pineapple" or "artichoke".<ref name=cir>Peter, p. 32</ref> As it was slowly falling apart, it was removed in 1959.<ref>''Reinventing Modern Dublin'' by Yvonne Whelan</ref> James Joyce ↗ references the monument in his novel ''Ulysses ↗'' when Leopold Bloom ↗ passes the monument and thinks, "Sir Philip Crampton's memorial fountain bust. Who was he?" Joyce also references the sculpture in his novel ''A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man ↗'' as the protagonist Stephen Dedalus ↗ explains different forms of art to his friend: “Is the bust of Sir Philip Crampton lyrical, epical, or dramatic?”
