:I owe you a circumscribed apology. You've mixed up two very different American songs--Nelly Gray ↗ and Nelly Bly. Nelly Bly ''is'' based on the Liverpudlian Maggy May. The American derivative is by none other than Stephen Foster ↗. Both songs have lots of different performances on YouTube. Please listen to enough to satisfy yourself that all this is correct, and I trust you'll remove the misinfo from Nelly Gray. ::@Tapered I listened to the Beatles cover of Maggie Mae and the chorus resembles Nelly Gray: "Oh! my poor Nelly Gray, they have taken you away,/ And I'll never see my darling any more" vs "Oh, dirty Maggie Mae, they have taken her away / And she never walk down Lime Street anymore". I don't want to push a POV that they are derived from the same song, I just noticed some sort of relationship and confirmed it in a third-party source, although there might be other intermediary songs as you mentioned.
