User Talk: OsamaBinLogin
Server-side rendered snapshot of this editor's Wikipedia talk page discussions.
Hi. I'm a computer programmer living in the SF bay area.
Don't be put off by my username! Sorry if you're offended or anything. I started using this name OsamaBinLogin on other forums since before 9/11. My main intent was to mock the man, and have a chuckle. I had nothing but contempt for him while alive, and I'm glad he's gone. I was born and raised a Presbyterian in rural New York State, to parents of central european descent. I've since become agnostic. Never been islamic, although I'm a firm believer in freedom of religion.
original welcome (i guess i never throw away anything)

Funny username
Thank you for making me laugh out loud! Very clever. --<span style="color:#933;font-family:Monotype Corsiva;cursor:help">'''<big>Kenatipo</big>'''</span> speak! 22:46, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

Remember Algebraic data type ↗?
Hello. I just saw the comment you made at Talk:Algebraic data type#technical ↗ a few years ago, and I added a response. In short, I think you're right that it ''is'' a somewhat technical article, but you seemed to have a few misunderstandings. If I were you, I wouldn't worry too much about understanding this right now, but I'd follow the link there to the Haskell Wikibook so you can learn something about it. Hope that helps. --BlueGuy213 (talk) 00:51, 27 February 2012 (UTC)
Talk page edits
Please be more restrained when editing article WP:Talk ↗ pages, as you did at Talk:Adenoviridae ↗ in this edit ↗. You should not remove sections you consider resolved; others may disagree, and the history is important. If the page gets overly long (it's not even close right now), it can be archived ↗. Finally, while not expressly prohibited, there is no need to edit section headers that have been in place for a while (one was 5 years old), and changing them can cause confusion because links in page histories (the horizontal arrow and section name) get broken when you do this, unless you also add an <nowiki>{{anchor|OldHeaderName}}</nowiki> template just below the new header. I agree the old headers were uninformative, but in general it's better to leave them alone unless misleading or offensive. I know your edits were in good faith, so this is just meant as friendly advice. I've restored the section you deleted and the rest can stand. -- Scray (talk) 02:15, 29 July 2013 (UTC)
Can I keep this username?
{{unblock reviewed | 1=Sorry, I get it that my username OsamaBinLogin could be seen as offensive. I started using this username (/bin/login, get it?) actually before 911, in other places, partly to mock the real Osama Bin Laden, whom I've always considered to be criminal. I use this name also on many other systems to comment on news or software development sites. Is the problem that my username could be offensive to OBL's followers? I've never received threats. I don't do vandalism on WP and I'm looking to increase my prestige as a WP contributor. I have done lots of constructive edits to Wikipedia pages, often to introductory sections that seem too technical to me; 12 edits in July 2014 alone. People tell me I have a talent for describing complicated things simply. It would be nice if I could continue using this username. tx! I would be disinclined to let you keep it, but if you want, we can open up a username RFC ↗ and get some community consensus on whether we are offended enough or not. Daniel Case (talk) 01:13, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
:Well, evidently opinions differ. I don't see anything remotely offensive about the username: it just seems to me to be a mildly jokey name. Let us know if you want to take up Daniel's offer of a request for comments on the username. <small>''The editor who uses the pseudonym''</small> "JamesBWatson" (talk) 12:14, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
::{{ping|Daniel Case}} I agree with {{U|JamesBWatson}}. The username made me chuckle. It's no worse (in fact it's better) than some others we have here that aren't blocked, like Oldfartdrummer or Bigbuttz. I would not have blocked the user based on this name, and I ''disagree'' that we need to drag it into a username RFC. ~Amatulić <small>(talk)</small> 17:13, 26 September 2014 (UTC)
What about "Adolph Clickhere", "Genghis Khannotlogin", "Login Hussein", or "Kim Jong-illegal character in password"? <b style="color:Green">Chillum</b> 16:36, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
:Okay, good enough; I've reversed my earlier block. I suggest that you might want to add a note to your userpage specifying that you've been using this name on various forums since before 9/11 and that you have no ill intent. DS (talk) 17:10, 29 September 2014 (UTC)
- I don't see OsamaBinLogin as more offensive than my old user name User:Allan Akbar, which I had for six years on WP (and since the early 1990s on other sites on the 'Net) without anyone getting upset (the only reason I changed it was that too many copycats popped up on the 'Net, most of which I didn't want to be associated with...).
