Sizing non-free images
It may be helpful to know that non-free images must be no more than 100,000 pixels, which could be 316 x 316 pixels, or 250 x 400, or (more commonly) something like 285 x 350. You need to take care not to exceed this even by a pixel; I generally size non-free images to 99,800 just to be on the safe side.
Otherwise, your images will attract the attention of a bot, which will shrink your image to 100k pixels, making it vilely fuzzy in the process (its resizing algorithm is nasty, brutish, and short, to coin a phrase).
You'll get much nicer results if you use a graphics editor to crop or resize your images (using "smart size" or something of that sort) followed by "unsharp mask" adjusted to give a sharp image but without obtrusive sharpening artefacts (like white edges all over the place).
Given that the resulting thumbnail is really small, it's best to crop as far as possible so that the detail in the remaining key bits of the image is actually legible.
There is an 'Image resize calculator' at Toolforge ↗. You enter the X and Y dimensions of your (cropped) image, e.g. 1475 x 825, and a desired pixel size, eg. 99800, and it tells you to resize the image to 422 x 236 ... which will evade the attentions of the bot.
I've done the trolls image for you.
All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:54, 19 November 2025 (UTC)
:Thank you very much! I've just been adding the resize template but I'll do it manually from now on. Paccyd33 (talk) 00:01, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
