ArbCom elections are now open! ↗

Hi,<br>
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election ↗. The Arbitration Committee ↗ is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process ↗. Thank you, but I'm not sure I'm right!

Thank you for the thank you. I've opened a new topic at Template talk:Infobox UK legislation#Status again: do we need an 'In_progress' parameter? ↗ because I'm not convinced that ''any'' of the options open to us is appropriate in this case. Please add your opinion there. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 16:13, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge ↗ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge ↗. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic) ↗. For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon ↗, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Copying licensed material requires proper attribution

Hi. I see in a recent addition to Prostitution in the United Kingdom ↗ you included material from a webpage that is available under an Attribution 4.0 International license. That's okay, but you have to give attribution so that our readers are made aware that you copied the prose rather than wrote it yourself. I've added the attribution for this particular instance. Please make sure that you follow this legal requirement when copying from compatibly-licensed material in the future. You can do it manually like I did, or try out the template {{tlx|CC-notice}}. Your expert hand

Since you seem to have a speciality at improving articles about Prostitution I think the following articles could do with your expert hand
Prostitution in Tunisia ↗, Prostitution in Costa Rica ↗, Prostitution in Argentina ↗,Prostitution in Malaysia ↗, Prostitution in Trinidad and Tobago ↗ and Prostitution in Sri Lanka ↗. Dwanyewest (talk) 16:28, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
:Thanks for the compliment Dwanyewest. I'll see what I can do, but I'm afraid that the editing method I use is rather slow. - Polly Tunnel (talk) 16:52, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Prostitution in Belize ↗ may be of interest also. Dwanyewest (talk) 23:51, 18 August 2017 (UTC)

Prostitution - various

Hi

Not sure if this is the right way to contact you?

You may remember we talked about various prostitution pages earlier this year. I have decided to close my site oldestprof.com and to transfer some of the wiki pages over to WP.

Pages added:<br>
Murdered sex workers in the UK ↗<br>
Sidi Abdallah Guech ↗

Pages changed:<br>
Prostitution in Scotland ↗: added section: 'Ranger’s Impartial List of Ladies of Pleasure'<br>
Prostitution in Egypt ↗: Expanded History section, added section 'Nikah mut‘ah'<br>
Prostitution in Tunisia ↗: Expanded whole article<br>

Category added:<br>
Prostitution in Tunisia

Could you have a look at them and carry out any edits needed.

Thanks

:John B123 (talk) 21:40, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

::Hi John B123 – it's good to hear from you. I've started looking through the contributions you've made and they look great. I hope you'll be able to make more additions to WP like these; the Sex work task force ↗ has been woefully understaffed for years. - Polly Tunnel (talk) 18:00, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

:::Thanks, hopefully now I have more time on my hands I can contribute some more. I'm not sure what the correct procedure is when adding new pages. I just added Sidi Abdallah Guech ↗, but when I started to put together Prostitution in Morocco in my sandbox, it seemed to indicate it should be saved as a draft (which I did): Draft:Prostitution in Morocco ↗.

:::I didn't realise there was a Sex work task force ↗. I'll have a look through the articles wanted/need improving. John B123 (talk) 20:46, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

::::{{reply to|John B123}} I'm not sure why you were asked to submit Draft:Prostitution in Morocco ↗. I've heard of this happening before but mainly to editors who haven't been WP:Autoconfirm ↗ed. I suppose it could be the title; I haven't created an article with the word "prostitution" in the title since about 2014. But if that's the reason you would expect Murdered sex workers in the UK ↗ to have had the same results. There seems to be an awfully long wait to get articles reviewed at the moment. I guess you could ask at the WP:Teahouse ↗ what you would need to do in order to be able to publish articles directly. Incidentally, the Sex work task force ↗ list of articles wanted/needing improvement is rather old, and you might find that a number of them have already been done (or been deleted). I've never had the time to keep the list up do date, partly because I've never been sure if anybody other than me has been reading it. - Polly Tunnel (talk) 17:08, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

::::: I searched for the pages Murdered sex workers in the UK ↗ and from the results click on create Murdered sex workers in the UK ↗. I did the same for Sidi Abdallah Guech ↗. After a few days I got a message 'The page ‪Sidi Abdallah Guech‬ has been reviewed . DGG '. (I haven't had any review notifications for Murdered sex workers in the UK ↗) Prostitution in Morocco was initially created in my sandbox. There was a box appeared along the lines 'Once you consider your article is ready submit it as a draft.' It didn't have a title untill I clicked the link to submit the draft when you are asked to give a title (which automatically adds the prefix 'Draft:), so I don't think it has anything to do with the title.
::::: Looking at WP:Autoconfirm ↗, it says 'members' can create article, so I think I'll just create future articles and see what happens?
::::: Do you have to be invited to join Sex work task force ↗? John B123 (talk) 19:40, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
::::::{{reply to|John B123}} Ah. It looks like it may have been the use of the sandbox that caused the problem (I've never used mine). Hopefully if you don't do it that way in the future you should be able to create articles directly. You don't have to be invited to join the Sex work task force ↗ (nor any WP:WikiProject ↗ as far as I am aware). I think I may be the only active member at the moment – some of the people who've put their names on the page still edit WP but I don't think they're involved in the project. Essentially the articles on the list need improving and the list itself needs updating. The grid automatically shows all the articles that have the project's template on their talk pages. It can be another useful way to find articles that need work. For instance, if you click on the "206" under Total number of Stubs it will take you to a list of all the sex work articles which are stub class, most of which will need expanding. So if you wish to join the project, welcome aboard! - Polly Tunnel (talk) 14:43, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
::::::: Hi. I think it's {{tl|User sandbox}} that appears by default on sandbox that led me to submitting a draft. I'm currently working on another article in sandbox but when ready will copy & paste to the new article.
::::::: I've added my name to Sex work task force ↗ and will have a look at adding/improving articles - John B123 (talk) 18:17, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I'm after a bit of advice. I've expanded Prostitution in Yemen ↗, but not sure if the heading of one of the section is the best way of summing up the section: Islamic fundamentalism ↗. Any thoughts would be appreciated. (Feel free to change it if you can think of something more appropriate). Thanks John B123 (talk) 23:28, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
:{{reply|John B123}} Good question. I don't generally edit articles on Islam, but after a quick perusal of the articles on Islamic fundamentalism ↗, Islamic revival ↗ and Islamism ↗ I get the impression that the term ''Islamic fundamentalism'' is often used in this context but could be considered pejorative (or technically inaccurate) by some readers. The term ''Islamic activism'' doesn't have its own article (it redirects to ''Islamic revival'') but would connect with the idea of action being taken, which is the point of the section. ''Islamism'' appears to be the most neutral and academic term, but its meaning is probably a little broader than the others. I think any of these terms would be OK as the heading for the section. Polly Tunnel (talk) 11:06, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

::{{reply|Polly Tunnel}} Thanks. I think I'll change it to ''Islamic activism'', it seems to be the most descriptive. If anybody who knows more than us about Islam want to change it further then so be it. Thanks also for the copyediting on that section, and indeed improving my poof written English on other articles. John B123 (talk) 16:46, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I've added a request for comments on Talk:Prostitution in Oceania ↗. Any comments you may have would be appreciated, John B123 (talk) 22:27, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

On the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of countries by number of prostitutes ↗, 'Doncram' has made some good suggestions. Your thoughts would be valued. Discussion on Photo Submission

Hope you don't mind that I moved your latest comment on the Webcam Model Talk Page talk page ↗ to a new section upon that page. It seems like we have wandered very far from talking about that particular photo, and are instead going on an unusual philosophical discussion about the nature of a photo requirements, and the validity of that template. It seems like a new section is appropriate, because this discussion will further unravel beyond the issue of that particular photo. Please read my response and consider what our real dilemma is. Issues in social nudity

I have found one website that is balanced and uptodate that could be used for freferences were it not to be a blog. {{cite web |title=Finding the courage to enjoy social nudity |url=https://naturistphilosopher.wordpress.com/2013/12/28/finding-the-courage-to-enjoy-social-nudity/ |website=Naturist Philosopher |accessdate=21 June 2018 |date=29 December 2013}}- the pages and links it provides are really useful. Some like {{cite web |title=Benefits of social nudity: body acceptance |url=https://naturistphilosopher.wordpress.com/2015/02/01/benefits-of-social-nudity-body-acceptance/ |website=Naturist Philosopher |accessdate=21 June 2018 |date=1 February 2015}} do have references.

There have been many problems with Issues in social nudity ↗ for many years. There is a single contributor, and I think it is fair to say that these were his issues. The term {{`}}'''social nudity'''{{`}} didn't exist five years ago, the academic who was attempting to find papers using the term only could find circular references back here. On line dictionarys- just redirected to naturism. The blog I refered to is however consistent in using the term getting round the US usage of Nudism, which means some thing seedy in the EU.

{{cite web |title=Why isn’t social nudity thriving? |url=https://naturistphilosopher.wordpress.com/2014/02/15/why-isnt-social-nudity-thriving/ |website=Naturist Philosopher |accessdate=21 June 2018 |date=15 February 2014}} may provide a structure to a WP page.

I thought that you may like the lead- and understand why I finally started to cull so much. --ClemRutter (talk) 08:10, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
:{{reply|ClemRutter}} Thanks for your message. I'm comparatively new to the article but I can see why you've had a lot of culling to do. This article, like some others connected with nudity (Nudity and sexuality ↗ springs to mind) are essentially essays and quite possibly shouldn't exist. I was interested in your point about the term ''social nudity'' being of recent origin. I suspect that some of the problems besetting this article originate from its name, as that determines what is on-topic and off-topic, and hence what can be used as sources.
: In this case we have the anomaly of an article called Issues in social nudity ↗ but no article called Social nudity ↗. The latter simply redirects to Naturism#Social nudism ↗, a section of the Naturism ↗ article which appears to have that title only to distinguish itself from the preceding Naturism#Personal and family nudity ↗ section. The term ''social nudism'' is otherwise only used once in the Naturism ↗ article (in the lead) and there are few other uses of it on WP. Social nudity ↗, on the other hand, gets significant usage on WP. There is the List of places where social nudity is practised ↗ and its sub-lists, the "Social nudity in..." articles, a List of social nudity organizations ↗ and a Timeline of non-sexual social nudity ↗. The WP use of the term seems to be designed to be as generic as possible (the lists of social nudity places mainly list nude beach ↗es, but the title has to be generic enough to include places which are not beaches).
:The Issues in social nudity ↗ article, however, is nearly all about issues in naturist ↗ resort and clubs. Do we need the title to be as generic as possible here? Of should we cut the article slightly and make it an article about "issues in naturism"? That expression appears to produce more potentially useful results than "issues in social nudity" when using a Google search. Even the ''Naturist Philosopher'' blog is titled after naturism rather than social nudity. So that would be my suggestion: move the article to Issues in naturism ↗. We'd also need to retitle the section of the Naturism article called Naturism#Issues in social nudity ↗ to Naturism#Issues in naturism ↗, but that section unsurprisingly is only about issues in naturism. What do you think? - Polly Tunnel (talk) 11:06, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Your wikipedia bugbears are SO true

Hello Polly,

re: ''I'll include some examples of my favourite bugbears:''

Wow, you are an astute observer. Some of those same bugbears have sometimes led me to wonder why I even bother to add content to Wikipedia articles. Especially when a bully is controlling one and other editors are afraid to get involved. But then I find other articles of interest to me, where there is a genuine collaborative effort to improve the content, with fully-cited material.

Who knows ... perhaps some editors consider '''my''' tactics to be their bugbears, but I hope that most do not.
Cheers! Peter Peter K Burian (talk) 16:26, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
:{{reply|Peter K Burian}} Thanks for your kind words. I'd been wondering if my user page was out-of-date or too negative, so it's reassuring to hear that it's still of interest. - Polly Tunnel (talk) 16:33, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Sex work in Mumbai

Hi. I hope all is well with you. There is a new article Sex work in Mumbai ↗, as your language skills are far better than mine, would you mind casting your eye over it. Thanks, John. --John B123 (talk) 22:40, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

: Hi John B123. Good to hear from you. Thanks for drawing my attention to this. I've done a quick copy edit of the article – it's probably worth checking I haven't made any typos. I think the article must have originated as a piece of student work, but it seems better than the average student article. Nevertheless, it does still suffer from the usual essay-style problems. I haven't looked into the sources, but there are a lot of rather weasel-sounding "researchers all agree that.." type statements which probably need to be attributed in the text. As usual there's a confusion about the meanings of "girl" and "young girl" but I haven't edited these as only the sources would clarify it. I've supported the proposed move on the talk page. - Polly Tunnel (talk) 14:40, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
:: Hi. Thanks for having a look. I agree with your thoughts about this being a student work and, as you point out, better than most. Cheers --John B123 (talk) 17:07, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

Shock value

Hello, I remember that you were responsible for leading a conversation about the lead image in the Cock and ball torture article ↗ a few months ago.

Based on your explanations, I decided to change the Master/slave ↗ lead image for another lead image that has the exact same message: a person on a leash during some BDSM event. The only difference is that the old image has nudity, the new image has no nudity.

But a person told me that I have no right to follow MOS:SHOCKVALUE ↗ guidelines if there is another user who doesn't wanna follow the guidelines (?).

So I wanna know if you would like to give your opinion in Master/slave talk page ↗, I just created a new topic there. Your opinion will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much for your attention. <span style="font-family:Candara;color:#AF0900;text-shadow:silver 1px 1px 1px;">gabibb2</span> <span style="font-family:Bell Gothic;color:#AF0900;text-shadow:silver 1px 1px 1px;">✉</span> 17:53, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

:Hi Gabibb2. Thanks for drawing my attention to this, though I'm afraid I don't think I can be of much help to you. Your point that the article's lead image can be assessed with regard to MOS:SHOCKVALUE ↗ is certainly valid. However, it is of course the case that in most situations on WP consensus on talk pages trumps any of the guidelines, and I have experienced many occurrences where edits that I believe in cannot be made because of a lack of consensus. In this instance, sadly, the question of choice of lead image has been overtaken by the argument that has ensued about editorial behaviour. In my experience it will now be very difficult to turn the discussion back to the original point, at least in the short term. I would suggest that the best course of action would be to move onto other articles where your experience can be put to good use. Continuing to argue about the point on this article is likely to be a waste of your time, and will probably only harm your reputation among the WP community. Yours -- Polly Tunnel (talk) 10:34, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

::I don't think that arguing about it is a waste of time or it will harm my reputation. So far, no one has presented an argument on Talk Page that answers any of the questions I raised there. So it is very clear that I am correct so far, I can't just shut up and accept authoritarianism on Wikipedia.

::I thought you would have an opinion to add there to enrich the conversation. Your experience would bring convincing points, in case you have an opinion to give. If there is no consensus, I can still go to Wikipedia:Dispute resolution ↗. If we have two images that carry the same message, one with nudity and one without nudity, there is no reason to insist on the image with nudity and no one has given any valid reason as to why the image with nudity is the best to illustrate the article. <span style="font-family:Candara;color:#AF0900;text-shadow:silver 1px 1px 1px;">gabibb2</span> <span style="font-family:Bell Gothic;color:#AF0900;text-shadow:silver 1px 1px 1px;">✉</span> 13:58, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Tavistock proposed new station

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this '''anonymous survey ↗'''.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page ↗ and view its privacy statement ↗ .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team ↗

The survey is anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page ↗ and view its privacy statement ↗.

Many thanks

Many thanks for your edit ↗ to the PSA article. I previously added details of the regulatory framework, with references, in November 2024 and details of the changeover itself minutes after it happened in February 2025. The article was in need of a critical eye to tidy up the wording and consistency of style throughout. Many thanks for actioning that. --92.21.136.243 ↗ (talk) 21:43, 11 February 2025 (UTC)

Hethersett request for assistance

Hi @Polly Tunnel!

I'm working on improving the Hethersett ↗ article, and could use some help. As you made a few edits to the page a little while back, I was wondering if you would be willing to assist me with it. Thanks for your consideration,

I have done a translation but can not publish.

Dear Polly,

I am a 'rookie' from Hungary. Here we have a beloved beach and I would let the English speaking World to know it.

This is the Hungarian page of it: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sziks%C3%B3sf%C3%BCrd%C5%91_Naturista_Strand_%C3%A9s_Kemping and this is an English translation in my 'sandbox':

User:Valkais/Sziksósfürdő Naturist Beach and Camping

I would like to publish it, but I can not do that. My ask: please publish it instead of me (and once if you can come and visit this beautiful place :) . Here I declare that I let you (and ask) to do it officially/legally (anyhow it is needed to).

Once it is published I will take care (enriching with more text and material).

Best regards
