Volume vs. issue

If you go here ↗ and look at the formatted citation for a journal like ''Nature'', for example, "906" is not in parentheses. If you download the citation in various formats, as I've done, all give "906" as the volume – e.g. the RIS file has "VL - 906", the EndNote XML has <code><volume><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">906</style></volume></code> So why do you think that "906" is an issue? :Yeah, I didn't notice that when making those edits. I probably should've been more thorough before editing. The main reason I thought it was an issue was that zookeys 906 is listed under https://zookeys.pensoft.net/issues. I also initially thought it fit WP:CS1#Edition identifiers ↗'s definition of issue better than volume, but after re-reading I honestly think it could fit either. ::I think that in discussing journals, the word ''issue'' is used in different senses. "The latest issue" would mean the latest complete unit of the journal to be published, which for some journals would be labelled a "volume" and for others a subunit of a volume, and I suspect this is the sense of the Zookeys URL. In citations, the issue is a subunit of a volume, so appears in parentheses after the volume, e.g. "12(3)" would be the 3rd issued part of volume 12. When journals were only produced in print, libraries would eventually bind all issues of a volume together. Peter coxhead (talk) 06:55, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
