Shortened footnote references

Hi @Rajbarage, thanks for contacting me regarding the references on :Mikoyan MiG-29 ↗. Generally Wikipedians prefer to discuss on talk pages rather than by email, so I will reply here – I don't see that there was anything in the email you sent that needs to be kept private.

The issue that I fixed was what is called a "Shortened footnote multiple-target error". The Mig-29 article uses the shortened footnotes system of referencing, which you can read about here ↗. When shortened footnotes are created using the {{tl|harv}} / {{tl|sfn}} templates, they generate a wikilink from the short entry in the footnotes link to the source – you can see what I mean by looking at e.g. this reference ↗, which when clicked on links to the long-form bibliographic data for Gordon & Davison (2005). However, if there is more than one source that matches the shortened footnote, then the module that generates the links doesn't know which to link to and emits an error.

In most cases (like this one) the error is not very serious, because the two sources are the same. However, sometimes there is more than one source in the same year by the same author, and then the shortened reference is ambiguous; this needs to be fixed. In order to locate the set of such ambiguous references small it is necessary to fix all of the cases where the source is the same too, and this task is in fact what I spend most of my Wikipedia work on.

I hope that clears things up! Thanks for your work on the article, and best wishes, Wham2001 (talk) 17:58, 14 April 2026 (UTC)

:Thank you so much Wham2001! That was helpful.
:Have a great day!
