Wikipedia and copyright
30px|link=|alt=Control copyright icon ↗ Hello THeShavidow1! Your additions to :Ranjan Gogoi ↗ have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain ↗ or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible ↗ copyright license. (''To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission ↗''.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright ↗ and plagiarism ↗ issues.
- You can only copy/translate a ''small'' amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation mark ↗s (") and cite the source using an inline citation ↗. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content ↗ in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners ↗, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information ''in your own words and structure'', in proper paraphrase ↗. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems ↗, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing ↗. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify ↗ the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research ↗.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use ↗ images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria ↗ in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If ''you'' own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you ''may'' be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, ''to the world'', into either the public domain ↗ (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible ↗ copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials ↗.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia ↗. See also Help:Translation#License requirements ↗.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked ↗ from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. <!-- Template:uw-copyright-new --> — Diannaa (talk) 00:24, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

:Hello Diannaa, am I still perhaps allowed to edit the article Ranjan Gogoi ↗, as I think there is still much to add without creating copyright problems ↗ and without copying from the source directly THeShavidow1 (talk) 06:43, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
::Yes it's okay to work on the article but don't copy any text from your sources. Everything you add needs to be written in your own words please.— Diannaa (talk) 14:10, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
:::Hi Diannaa, I have made an edit that has added to the article. I have added some of what I did before, but all in my own words. Is it ok if I use the same material and sources as I did before, and the same citations? I have put it in my own words and nothing has been copied and pasted. Thank you. THeShavidow1 (talk) 15:40, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

This is not some absolutist law, it is context dependent and a general guideline and is regularly not done based off of relevance and importance, such as the lede stating he is an MP despite that being after he was a banker. I have written most of that section and then placed I placed it at the bottom because frankly it is not the most relevant part of the BLP article. Accusing others of bad faith is absurd in this context, especially considering how what I wrote was hardly a forgiving read to the subject. NotQualified (talk) 17:06, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

@THeShavidow1 - hello there! I note your wholescale revertion of my edits to the Lord Johnson of Lainston ↗ article. Whilst they most certainly weren't in any way "unnecessary wording changes", I respect your view & can revisit this again after a short while... Various things are wrong with the present wording, not least "Johnson earned a bachelor's degree in politics from Durham University, where he was a member of Collingwood College, graduating in 1995" (see my revision should you wish to see correct language) etc etc.. Thanks again your attention to such matters & maybe better I go thru and edit section by section..??? Best, Primm1234 (talk) 19:17, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Thank you for your contributions ↗ to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to :Omeo Kumar Das ↗ when you modified the page, you introduced {{cl|Unknown parameters|unknown parameters}}. Just because you specify {{para|some_param|{{var|some_variable}}}} does not always mean that variable will display. The {{para|some_param}} must be defined in the template. :::I tend to block for a week for the first offense, mostly as a particularly stern form of warning (one that comes with an un-eraseable log).
