Doubt on politician category

{{Re|Tuhin}} Hey, just curious. Is :21st-century Indian politicians ↗, not valid anymore! Thanks a lot for all the good work in reviewing my articles though. Happy editing! Davidindia (talk) 12:21, 19 May 2026 (UTC)

:@Davidindia, I removed the articles because those biographies were already included in more specific subcategories within :Category:21st-century Indian politicians ↗, so keeping them in the parent-category as well would create overcategorization per Wikipedia’s categorization guidelines. Thanks, and happy editing to you too! Tuhin (talk) 13:41, 19 May 2026 (UTC)

Categorization of individuals

Hello, Tuhin,

I was just noticing that you are recategorizing the articles on a lot of individuals from more specific occupational categories (writers, politicians, etc) to more general ones ("people from X"). I noticed because this kind of recategorization usually goes in the opposite direction, from more general to more specific. Do you have a reason for why you are targeting these specific categories and do you expect to continue? Sometimes this recategorization happens if the category creator hasn't really understood the purpose of categories but in your case, the categories you have emptied out have each been created by a different editor.

In general, if you do have a plan to reorganize categories, leading to deletion, merger or renaming, we ask that editors use the Categories for Discussion ↗ system so that more editors are aware of such large changes and don't, for example, just revert all of the edits you've done. Please consider using CFD. Thank you. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:#800080;">'''''L'''''iz</span> '''''Read!''''' ↗ '''''Talk!''''' 20:32, 28 June 2026 (UTC)

:@Liz, thank you for your message.
:The specific occupational subcategories that I moved to the broader "People from X" categories were all, in my view, underpopulated. For example, :Category:People from Narsinghpur district ↗ and :Category:People from Barnala district ↗ contain very few articles. In such cases, I felt that maintaining separate occupational subcategories was unnecessary.
:I would also like to draw your attention to another issue that I have noticed. In several Indian states, new districts have been created following administrative reorganizations, but instead of creating and properly populating categories for people from those new districts, the old district categories have been split into occupational subcategories.
:For example, NTR district ↗ was carved out of Krishna district ↗. If categories for people from the newly created districts are created and properly populated, there would be much less need to splitting the old district categories by occupation.
:At present, Andhra Pradesh has 28 districts ↗, yet there are only 18 "People from X district" categories. This means that categories for 10 districts have not yet been created, and several of the existing ones are still underpopulated. In my opinion, splitting the older district categories before creating and adequately populating the new district categories does not seem like the most logical approach.
:I hope this issue can be discussed further and that an appropriate solution can be reached. Thank you. Tuhin (talk) 14:06, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
::Please don't remove people from more specific categories just because they are underpopulated. This is called emptying out of process. Please nominate these underpopulated categories for merging instead.SMasonGarrison 12:32, 30 June 2026 (UTC)

July 2026

25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Hi, and thank you for your edits ↗ to Wikipedia. I wanted to follow up about an edit where, :Gabriel González (journalist) ↗ was removed from a parent category ↗.

This category is part of a group that falls under WP:EGRSD ↗, which covers categories based on ethnicity, gender, religion, sexuality, or disability. These categories are typically set up as '''non-diffusing'''. That means when a page is added to a subcategory like this one, it's still meant to be included ↗ in the parent category as well.

This is important because removing someone from the parent category can unintentionally change who appears to "belong" there. Over time, that can make the main category look less representative than it actually is, which the WP:EGRSD ↗ guideline is designed to avoid ↗.

If you're not sure whether a subcategory is non-diffusing ↗, you can often check the category page itself; many include a note or template. You can also read more at WP:EGRSD ↗ and in the section on the final-rung rule ↗. If you need further help, ask at the Teahouse ↗. Thanks again for contributing, and I hope this helps clarify things!<!-- Template:uw-categrs --> SMasonGarrison 00:26, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
