Fathom article

I just wanted to say great work on the ''Fathom'' article! I had it on my own personal list of game articles that seemed important that had not been created yet for early console systems, but you went ahead and made it and did a bang-up job. Great work! Andrzejbanas (talk) 16:12, 9 February 2026 (UTC)

:Thank you! I've been pouring over ''Computer Entertainer'' recently so finding that initial review was pretty simple. Then everything sort of feel into place from there. I hadn't realized how much these article sort of write themselves once you get a handful of reviews together. Anyway I'm glad you think I did a good job, it means a lot to me. Whipmywillows (talk) 21:09, 9 February 2026 (UTC)
::Yeah! I find that's generally the case. Usually when you have two or three hopefully other details can come along with them. (gameplay, release stuff, etc.) Again, glad to see it made!Andrzejbanas (talk) 08:20, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
:Hi there! :) If you have an interest in creating articles on retro video games, there are a few dozen of them listed with sources at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Requests ↗ (and many more at its archive page). BOZ (talk) 13:28, 22 February 2026 (UTC)
::Interesting. I may get around to some of these eventually but I think I already have too many of my own projects to be working on right now. Every time I look I see new resources on this site I hadn't noticed before. Whipmywillows (talk) 07:52, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
:::Being resource rich is only a problem if its overwhelming and leaves you unsure of where to start. :) Well, if you happen to work on any of those on your own, now you know where to look for additional sources. BOZ (talk) 02:36, 28 February 2026 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for May 18

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Computer Golf! ↗, a link pointing to the disambiguation page Back-swing ↗ was added. Video Game Update review style

Great work on the pre-NES games! You did a bang-up job on the articles. Just as a heads up, the ratings seen in ''The Video Game Update ↗'' are not rankings like {{rating|3|3}}/{{rating|4|4}} or what not, as they state in their guides (like on page 68 here ↗) that:
"{{gt|First set of stars-Quality of graphics
Second set of stars-Quality of play action}}.
instead if the rating meaning {{rating|3|4}}. An honest mistake and I wish they adapted to some sort of overall score earlier, but at least they clarify it.

But great work on these, Its nice to see these receive some attention. :) Andrzejbanas (talk) 17:00, 21 May 2026 (UTC)

:Thank you! I put a lot of work into them. I was aware that early CE split it's review scores up but I was kind of working on the assumption that the gameplay score could be considered the "main" score. Probably a dumb assumption in retrospect. I've been having trouble fitting in reviews from publications that split up their review scores but also don't have much to say beyond a basic summary. I suppose, you can always put a statement like "''The Video Game Update ↗'' gave it three out of four stars for graphics and two and a half stars for gameplay." but that's so wordy for a statement which tells the reader so little. Part of me wishes there was a way to split the reception box up so that we could fit both scores in without confusing the reader. Whipmywillows (talk) 19:50, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
::I always have trouble with them too. They are a good source of information and in the 1980s, a gameplay summary would be useful. But less useful for us sometimes looking for something a bit more meaty. I sometimes just lump them in with others if I can "[one magazine], [another mag] and ''The Video Game Update'' complimented the graphics" or something. While the review box is sometimes useful, its not necessary either. If I find a bunch of reviews that don't use scores (which is not too unusual for the early Atari era) I just ignore the infobox and let the prose do the talking. Or, if I only find like one score, if I feel like the scores in general don't give the "bigger picture" of how a reviewer felt, I just skip on it and maybe leave a note on the talk page saying "the scores do not seem too useful here." I feel like trying to split up the scores to be about different topics probably makes things more complicated, but usually I find trimming stuff out instead of trying to make something fit usually makes for a better and easier article. Andrzejbanas (talk) 20:15, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
:::Cutting sources is always so hard for me, especially since I spend so much time digging for them. A lesson in restraint I suppose.
:::I've also had uncertainties when it comes to alternate titles. These Odyssey² games have a lot of them. Two english titles typically (NA and PAL) which can be quite different from each other (see ''Alien Invaders - Plus! ↗'' a.k.a ''Space Monster'') then there are two French titles (Mainland and Canadian, as seen on the french wikipedia's list ↗), Brazilian Portuguese, German, a whole host of other European languages, and sometimes Japanese. All of this is actually what brought me to the topic in the first place, I was having trouble picking the right title for redlinking purposes and figured it was better to just create the articles instead. I know long lists of localized titles isn't really what we do here but it looks like this has been a major point of confusion in the past, so wondering what the best way to approach this is. I have decent sources for the English, French, German, and Brazilian titles though not much for anything else. Whipmywillows (talk) 21:00, 21 May 2026 (UTC)
::::I definitely have trouble cutting stuff after I've searched far and wide too. But sometimes its not a matter of cutting it as it is trimming the fat from it. Like, we don't have to quote every magazine, especially if they don't have much to say ("graphics are great!", "its fun!", etc.!) I tried to do this recently when I re-wrote the Batman: The Animated Series (video game) ↗ article recently. Tons of reviews said graphics were great, but two went into specifics (the scale of the sprite compared to old games, and the specific details in the background). I kind of gave that writing a bit more time to shine to see where people may be coming from.
::::Usually we try not to give out too many alternative titles for things unless there is context (this is usually for the case in the other topic I deal with being films). Generally speaking if all we are saying is "______ was called ______ in Germany" or something isn't too important because its expected something will have a different name in another country (like, if we did this for every language for the article on Carrot ↗, it would be kind of trivial and probably not what anyone coming to the carrot article needs to know to understand the topic). Usually in video games we limit the names to the name most users would know it in English (i.e: ''Pac-Man'' instead of ''Puck Man'' or ''Pakkuman'' or whatever) but sometimes expand on a name in another language if the game was developed there (i.e: Japan, France, etc.) This of course leads to issues like, should we say Sega Genesis ↗ or Sega Mega Drive ↗ etc. I'd read through MOS:VGNONENG ↗ for more info. Regarding Intellivision ↗

In 1984, Mattel sold Intellivision to investors, turning it into INTV. But there is one problem, Intellivision isn’t mentioned on Mattel's websites and is there any way to figure things out? SBF2004 (talk) 16:27, 5 June 2026 (UTC)

:Yes, to a former VP at Mattel, who thought he could salvage the project https://archive.org/details/computer-entertainer-2-12/page/179/mode/1up ↗ (there's a better scan here on page 3 ↗). I could probably track down about a half dozen more sources on this if you want. That was also about the time the Intellivision stopped being relevant. Because of the video game crash of 1983 ↗, Intellivisions had already stopped selling and INTV limped ahead for a few more years but was never particularly relevant. INTV still sometimes makes flashback consoles but it's important to remember the Mattel's branding was all over these machines. I'm not sure what you're having questions about. Did Mattel make the console? Yes https://www.ataricompendium.com/archives/articles/arcade_alley/arcade_alley_jul80.pdf ↗ https://archive.org/details/TV_Gamer_1983-06_Boytonbrook_GB/page/n49/mode/2up ↗ and I'm sure every other source on it's wikipedia page, reliable or not.
