Redundant cats
Hi. Great job in subcategorizing. But when you add subcats please remove the parent cat. For example, having :Category:German-American sportspeople ↗ in an article makes :Category:German Americans ↗ redundant. So please removed the latter when you insert the former. More information can be found here ↗. Best, --'''''<span style="font family:Arial;color:green">brew</span><span style="font-family:Arial;color:#2E82F4">crewer</span> ↗ (yada, yada)''''' 14:59, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Problem with categorization
Hello -- I see that you've done a lot of good work with the ethnic and/or national categorization of people. You've done an excellent job so far, and those of us who work with all of the ethnic or national categories appreciate your work; however, I'd like to point out an error that you and another few editors have repeatedly made in regards to :Category:American people by ethnic or national origin ↗. You and these other editors seem to be removing that category from the MAIN categories dealing with, for example, :Category:Chinese Americans ↗ or :Category:German-Americans ↗, and placing the category in the much smaller and less developed SUBCATEGORIES which only contain American people of PARTIAL descent, for example :Category:Americans of Chinese descent ↗ or :Category:Americans of German descent ↗. It's pretty clear that :Category:American people by ethnic or national origin ↗ should be placed in the MAIN CATEGORY of a given ethnic or nationality category (e.g., in :Category:Chinese Americans ↗) and not in the SUBCATEGORY (e.g., :Category:Americans of Chinese descent ↗). I'm going to start fixing some of these and hope that you will do the same. Thanks. --Wassermann (talk) 03:49, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
:Your switch regarding the German-Americans to German Immigrants to the United States is not appropriate in all cases... seems you are abolishing the German-American category? --Teda13 (talk) 03:15, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
::(not all planes are jets, but all jets are planes) Being born in the U.S. doesn't exclude someone from their heritage. There are vast Italian-American, Jewish-American, German-American, Greek-American, Irish-American, communities in the U.S. who are second and third generation.. who '''were''' born in the U.S. Add the immigrant category if you wish, but moving these persons out of the original category doesn't make them more searchable in Wikipedia. --Teda13 (talk) 16:42, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Ideas: German immigrants to the US are subdivided into two groups: those who become US citizens and those who do not. However, probably all their descedants are US citizens. Their descendants may be of complete German ancestry or partial German ancestry depending on who has kids with whom. How does one make categories out of all this. Is all this important? Hmains (talk) 01:29, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, it's relevant for immigrants to be listed in a subcategory, they grew up in another country, another society, another culture, often spoke a language other than English etc. On the other hand, I don't think it is (in most cases) of any importance to list people because they have for example a great-great-grand-father, who immigrated from Germany or Ireland or Poland etc. I'm unsure about Americans of the second, third, fourth...generation of complete or partial descent. Maybe they identify somehow with it (Charles Bukowski ↗ for example identified with his German background), maybe not, usually we don't know, we can list people only by their descent. But I think is of interest for the social groups of German-Americans ↗, Irish-Americans ↗ etc. which persons were or are part of it. --Wulf Isebrand (talk) 11:53, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Since we are discussing the catagories for the United States. I'm fairly certain that someone - be they an immigrant or not - who lives in the U.S., and has lived for a long time with first-hand understanding of American culture, should be making the call on the catagories. Not to dismiss the value that someone who lives as a native of and citizen of Ireland, or Italy, or Germany could bring to the discussion ... simply traveling to the U.S. on a trip or for a holiday or to live on a college campus for a while, wouldn't seem to to give enough exposure to understand fully the many issues that should be weighed--Teda13 (talk) 17:39, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
Booians of Fooian descent instead of Fooian(-)Booians
Hello, Wulf Isebrand. I'd like to get your support for a series of renamings I am attempting to see all :Category:People by ethnic or national origin ↗ changed over to Booians of Fooian descent, a change, based on your vote with the discussion on the subcats for :Category:German people by ethnic or national origin ↗, it'd seem you'd favour. The discussion now is here Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 May 21 ↗ for Brazilians. Best regards, Mayumashu (talk) 15:58, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
::Thanks for the message. I replied on my page, to keep the talk together and thereby easier to follow. And thanks for the vote support at for :Category:Brazilian people by ethnic or national origin ↗ Mayumashu (talk) 22:12, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
I like your idea with Cat:American people by ethnic/nat. origin
I think however that an article page such as Mexican American ↗ should ultimately be incorporated into something like Mexican immigration to the United States ↗, that is on a page that focuses on immigration. And on this page and on :Category:Americans of Mexican descent ↗ there should be a statement that in colloquial American English, many people consider such a person as 'Mexican American' or 'Mexican-American'. On the subject of Fooian immigration to Booia ↗ pages, unlike category pages :Category:Booians of Fooian descent ↗, notability, as with any article page, must be shown to exist, in other words it needs to be shown that there has been significant immigrantion to warrant an article. I also think that for a number diaspora, ones that have migrated to a number of countries (such as Armenians) that there should be a single article page on that and not ones for each country the diaspora immigrate to. Therefore, I don t see the goal to be to fill up :Category:Ethnic groups in the United States ↗ with an article page for every single ethnicity found in the American populous, unlike the case with category pages, which should have a page for every ethnicity found amongst all notable Americans. Regarding your edit in Statewide opinion polling for the United States presidential election, 2008 ↗, there are two competing polls which are the latest ones in Indiana. Obama leads in one poll and McCain leads in the other poll. The margin was larger in the poll McCain is leading in. In the case of polls conducted during the same time period, the margins are combined so McCain is really leading in the combined polls. As your edit only reflected the poll in which Obama is leading, your edit was reverted. Steelbeard1 (talk) 17:20, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I noticed that you have reverted category changes that I made to many articles. How s it going? I agree with comments you have made on this issue, that these pages help reduce clutter. long lists and are informative. :Category:German beer culture ↗
The cat is already part of :Category:German culture ↗ and :Category: Beer and breweries in Germany ↗ so does not need to also be part of :Category:Beer culture ↗. Any articles within :Category:German beer culture ↗ that are appropriate for :Category:Beer culture ↗ will be individually placed within that category. Placing :Category:German beer culture ↗ within :Category:Beer culture ↗ is therefore inappropriate and redundant. Please see Wikipedia:Categorization ↗ and Wikipedia:Overcategorization ↗. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite
Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge ↗ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge ↗. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic) ↗. For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon ↗, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
