Edit summary
Please do not forget to add a relevant edit summary ↗ to every edit ↗ you make. Edit summaries exist so you can: provide reason for an edit, help people save time by not having to open up an edit and see why it was made, and it provides info about the edit on diff pages, see H:FIES ↗. It is a useful tool and isn’t for aesthetic purposes, as such should be used properly ↗. I ask you use a useful edit summary explaining the edit to make life easier for others and yourself. Thank you for understanding. Introduction to contentious topics
{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to '''post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people''', a topic designated as '''''contentious ↗'''''. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and <em>does <strong>not</strong> imply that there are any issues with your editing</em>.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee ↗. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators ↗ have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit <strong>carefully and constructively</strong>, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia ↗;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines ↗;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practices;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system ↗.
<p>Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics <em>procedures</em>, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard ↗ or you may learn more about this contentious topic ↗. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{tl|Ctopics/aware}} template. </p>}}<!-- Derived from Template:Contentious topics/alert/first --> Longhornsg (talk) 22:11, 12 December 2025 (UTC)
Please don't remove dead links
Please see WP:DEADLINK ↗ for instructions on how to handle citations that contain a URL that no longer works. In the case of your edit to :CheckUser ↗, I added an archive url to the citation. Edit summary purpose
The purpose of edit summaries is outlined at Help:Edit summary ↗. The idea is to indicate the type of edit. Abbreviations are sometimes used: rvv if reverting vandalism; ce if copy editing; typo if fixing spelling. Writing "nes" or "no edit summary" is confusing and unhelpful. Definitely do not do that. Temporary account IP viewer granted
right|80px|alt=The temporary account IP viewer logo, composed of the Wikipedia globe with a user and an IP address ↗
Hello, وسيم. Per your request, your account has been <span class="plainlinks">granted ↗</span> {{mono|temporary-account-viewer}} rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts ↗ that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is <strong>only</strong> to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer ↗ for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:
- You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy ↗.
- Access <strong>must not</strong> be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).
- When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
- Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
- Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP address ↗es (using the CIDR notation ↗ format).
SPI comments
Hi! I happened to notice just now that in this SPI ↗, your comment is under the "Clerk, CheckUser, and/or patrolling admin comments" section, but I don't see you on the list of SPI clerks ↗. Was that an accident, or are you a clerk who hasn't been listed for some reason?
Also, maybe you had some reason to do this, but I noticed that when you talk about accused sockpuppets, you seem to be using {{t|User}}, which pings ↗ the accounts. My understanding is that pinging is usually avoided in SPIs, since that often leads to angry and unhelpful comments from the accused accounts. You could use {{tl|no ping}}, {{tl|no ping2}}, or {{tl|checkuser}} instead to avoid pinging them.
Apologies if you already know these things and have reasons for doing them. Cadddr (talk) 03:12, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
:Hi @Cadddr i hope you're doing well,
:I assumed that the "Clerk, CheckUser, and/or patrolling admin comments" section is also applied to temporary IP viewer, since they have a similar capability to CheckUsers ↗ which can view IP addresses, even though they are not mentioned in that section. I apologize, and I will not repeat this again.
:<nowiki>Thank you very much for informing me of this. I genuinely was not aware that using the {{</nowiki>User ↗<nowiki>}} template sends a ping, so I will use the templates you mentioned this time. Have a great day there(:) </nowiki><span style="font-family: Amiri; font-size: 19px; text-shadow: silver 0.0em 0.0em 0.0em; color:FF000000;">'''Wassim'''</span>'''(Talk)''' ↗ 10:00, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
:@Cadddr,
:Excuse me, Would you mind if I asked you some questions regarding SPI requests ↗ on the Enwiki? I'm from the Arabic one and I've noticed several differences. <span style="font-family: Amiri; font-size: 19px; text-shadow: silver 0.0em 0.0em 0.0em; color:FF000000;">'''Wassim'''</span>'''(Talk)''' ↗ 14:51, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
::You're welcome to ask, though I can't promise I'll know all the answers. I'm just another TAIV ↗ like you, but I've participated in several SPIs, and I'm hoping to become an SPI clerk ↗ eventually. :) Cadddr (talk) 15:04, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
:::@Cadddr,
:::What does “This SPI case is new and awaits sorting by an SPI clerk or administrator” mean? And If I see it, am I allowed to start the investigation? Also, what does “Endorsed by a CheckUser/Clerk” mean? <span style="font-family: Amiri; font-size: 19px; text-shadow: silver 0.0em 0.0em 0.0em; color:FF000000;">'''Wassim'''</span>'''(Talk)''' ↗ 15:16, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
::::*“This SPI case is new and awaits sorting by an SPI clerk or administrator”: I think this just means no SPI clerk or administrator has looked at it yet and sorted it into one of the other statuses ↗. But yes, I'm pretty sure it's fine to start investigating these. That's what I've assumed.
::::*"Endorsed by a CheckUser/Clerk": I think this means that an SPI clerk thinks CheckUser would be warranted in the case.
::::You might find these pages helpful for understanding the procedures:
::::*Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Guide to filing cases ↗
::::*Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Clerk and checkuser procedures ↗
::::*Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/SPI/Administrators instructions ↗
::::Those last two pages aren't targeted at us, but they explain the procedures in more detail. Cadddr (talk) 15:34, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
:::::@Cadddr,
:::::Thank You!:) <span style="font-family: Amiri; font-size: 19px; text-shadow: silver 0.0em 0.0em 0.0em; color:FF000000;">'''Wassim'''</span><sup>'''(Talk)''' ↗</sup> 15:39, 25 April 2026 (UTC)
:Hey @Cadddr, @وسيم: just FYI, I believe templates like template:Confirmed ↗ should not be used by users who are TAIV but not CheckUsers (as done here ↗), per this comment ↗ of @Ponyo's (courtesy ping). Let me know if this understanding is incorrect. Thanks. Best, Staraction (talk <b>·</b> contribs ↗) <small>(please ping ↗ on reply)</small><!--Template:Ppor--> 01:37, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
::{{ping|Staraction}} I was under that impression too, but I couldn't find anything explicitly saying so. Thanks for confirming!
::@وسيم: It's probably best to remove those templates in the places where you've used them then. Cadddr (talk) 01:50, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
:::Correct, SPI templates such as {{confirmed}}, {{likely}} etc. are specifically meant to be used by Checkusers only. TAIV lacks the technical data available to checkusers when making such determinations. They appear in the "checkuser actions" box under the "Indicators and other notes (for internal use)" section when editing SPI cases.-- <span style="color: Navy;">'''Ponyo'''</span><span style="color: Navy;">''bons mots''</span> 18:34, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Welcome to Wikipedia ↗ and thank you for your contribution(s) ↗. However, as a general rule ↗, while user talk pages permit a small degree of generali{{#switch:{{{sp}}}|us=z|uk=s|#default=s}}ation, other talk pages such as Talk:Siege of Yorktown ↗ are strictly for discussing improvements to their associated main pages, and many of them have special instructions on the top. They are not a search engine, a chatbot, or a general discussion forum ↗ about the article's topic or any other topic. If you have questions or ideas and are not sure where to post them, consider asking at the Teahouse ↗. Thanks.<!-- Template:uw-chat1 --> Leonidlednev ↗ (T ↗, C ↗, L ↗) 20:30, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

- Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055 ↗).
- The autoconfirmed ↗ user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484 ↗).
20px|alt= ↗ '''Arbitration'''
- The arbitration case ''SchroCat ↗'' has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
- Per a recent motion ↗, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue ↗ are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
- Per a recent motion ↗, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
- The arbitration case ''Maghreb ↗'' has been closed.
class=skin-invert|20px|alt= ↗ '''Miscellaneous'''
- The May 2026 administrator elections ↗ are scheduled to run from April 29 to May 19. The call for candidates ↗ ends May 5.
- The 2026 Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election ↗ is scheduled to run from April 25 to June 1. Candidacy submissions ↗ close on May 10.
- A '''new noticeboard ↗''' for non-urgent, batch page protection requests has been created, primarily for the enforcement of contentious topic restrictions ↗.
