Battle of Maritsa 3Op

Hey, amigo Aeengath, just wanted to apologize for not responding earlier—I'd like to claim it's because I haven't been on to edit much recently; but, while this is true, the greater reason was cowardice, heh. I found both you and Botushali to make excellent & cogent arguments, and to be intelligent & friendly editors—and I just didn't want to make anyone mad at me...

Partly, also, the problem (for me) is that your suggestion seems to be the more informative—there is an argument for "Skadar" being the most relevant name at the time of the battle, and the most common in specialist sources; and, although Botushali made a good argument for "Shkodër" also being used at the time... well: your "Skadar (modern Shkodër)" includes "Shkodër" ''anyway,'' so why not just throw that line in there and be done with it? Everyone's happy!

...except friend Botushali was eminently ''not'' happy with this, heh—and, although I personally think I would choose "Skadar (modern Shkodër)", as mentioned (I think I said so in my very first comment too)... there '''is''' the issue that the guidelines, interpreted literally, by a "letter-of-the-law" sort of thing, seem (to me) to say that in a case like this—where it is unclear what exactly dominates in English usage—then "just use the local name" is the way to go.

So the choice is "disappoint Aeengath, and go with a possibly less-informative option", or "disappoint Botushali, and go with a possibly unjustifiable breach-of-guidelines". I couldn't do it!...

'''TL;DR,''' I am—apparently—rather useless at this sort of thing. I apologize, again. (I haven't checked the Dispute Resolution thread yet, but I may jump in there, probably on the "losing side" out of my pathological sympathy / contrarianism–)

Cheers, & hope you're doin' well,

Himaldrmann (talk) 07:36, 15 November 2025 (UTC)

:@Himaldrmann Honestly no worries at all and thank you for the message. These things get knotty quickly when a place carries several names across different periods.

:To put it as simply as possible: for the 1371 context, the only English sources that actually narrate the event use ''Skadar'', this matches the name in use under Zetan/Slavic rule at that time. That’s why, form a guideline point of view, this isn’t one of the cases where English usage is missing or unclear and we default to the modern local name.
:This follows the same principle WP:PLACE ↗ gives in its examples: {{tq|when discussing the city now called Istanbul, Wikipedia uses Byzantium in ancient Greece, and Constantinople for the capital of the Byzantine Empire}}. In our case the town appears as Scodra under Rome, Skadar under medieval Slavic/Zetan rule, Scutari under Venice, İşkodra under the Ottomans and Shkodër today. That is a lot of variation over time, but we simply use the name that the reliable English sources use for the 1371 battle which took place during the period of Slavic/Zetan rule.
:The wider works the other editor brought in cover different periods and therefore different naming traditions, or deal with broader contexts that aren’t about the 1371 campaign at all, like economic or architectural studies. This only creates noise and confusion around something that is actually pretty simple.

:So please, you don’t need to take this any further. DRN will look at it independently and on policy, which is the best place for something this narrow and straightforward. And again thank you again for the honesty and tone! it’s really appreciated.

Speedy deletion ↗ nomination of :File:Edwin George Boxshall 1979 Bryn Colton Getty.jpg ↗

48px|left|alt=|link= ↗

A tag has been placed on :File:Edwin George Boxshall 1979 Bryn Colton Getty.jpg ↗ requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion ↗, because it is a non-free file ↗ from a commercial source (e.g. Associated Press ↗, Getty Images ↗), where the file itself is not the subject of sourced commentary. If you can explain why the file can be used under the non-free content guidelines ↗, please add the appropriate non-free use tag ↗ and rationale.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may '''contest the nomination''' by visiting the page ↗ and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines ↗. <!-- Template:Db-badfairuse-notice --> <!-- Template:Db-csd-notice-custom --> <span class="nowrap" style="border:solid 4q magenta;border-radius:9in;box-shadow:0 0 9q magenta">&nbsp;<math>999</math>REAL 💬 ⬆ ↗ &nbsp;</span> 23:24, 27 December 2025 (UTC)

:@999real This image was added during the article GA review ↗ where its use was discussed and accepted. :::Thanks, I wasn't aware of that exemption to the fair use criteria. I am not aware of any other photographs of the subject so it will have to remain unillustrated for now - Dumelow (talk) 23:50, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
