"edutainment"
thanks for this addition. your reasoning sounds convincing. i shared your discovery on reddit, since this article seems to be the source for all the lists that have been circulating online for years.
https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads/s/ZeIZcaezlu
the source five mics albums combined with xxl's xxl albums have always been one of my favorite playlists. i was sad that neither seemed to be updated anymore. but now i have one more album in it.
well done, sir. Benyeahmin (talk) 17:59, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
:Glad it helped! It genuinely makes me smile that someone appreciates my work. The funny thing is, the actual source (pun intended) of this confusion might have been ''The Source'' itself, because for whatever reason, when they listed 5 mics albums in their issue 100, January 1998, they didn't include ''Edutainment'' ↗. And I guess they used that list since, and then people just copied it over and over, and nobody (including the magazine staff) bothered to check older issues. But I did. Because the vast majority of ''The Source'' album ratings in Wikipedia articles were either added by me or I double checked them, added issue numbers, page numbers, authors, etc. I went through issues one by one, checking every album. I actually haven't finished this task, and since then good people helped me get access to more issues, so I have even more reviews to go through. But real life got in the way and I've been on a bit of a hiatus. I'm planning to return at some point in near future. And now I can't wait, seeing that my work matters. Thank you so much! <3{{pb}}By the way, if you ever feel like writing/expanding articles about 90s hip-hop and need something from these old hip-hop magazines, let me know, I could probably help. Editing may be time-consuming and for the most part thankless, but it's so satisfying when you expand an article from 1 line of text ↗ to a full-fledged article ↗, learning more about a classic album in the process. Or when I expanded ''534 ↗'' and then a year later saw my own prose in a description of an eBay listing. It's an interesting feeling.{{pb}}As for the ''XXL'' list, I'm a bit skeptical. There are a few albums on Wikipedia listed as having XXL ratings, and they cite a magazine issue (don't remember which one, December 2007, I think?), but the citation doesn't have page numbers or anything. I don't have that issue, but from what I could see online, I couldn't find any evidence of that issue having a list of XXL albums. Alas, we'll have to wait for someone who cares about all this just as we do, but who has access to ''XXL'' magazine to double check. AstonishingTunesAdmirer ➜ 23:41, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
::as for xxl, you're right: i couldn't find a reliable source either. according to my research, there are 22 xxl albums, some of which overlap with the five mic albums.
::for me, it's really all about the playlist in this context. and a hip-hop playlist without eminem and kendrick sucks.
::do you also get the impression that neither one nor the other is being continued?
::for a while, i wrote quite a few wikipedia articles for the german edition. just about music, including hip-hop. but then — to quote you – real life got in the way. Benyeahmin (talk) 17:26, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
:::It's a good starting point, but they missed so many great albums. I'd also look at the list of 4 mics albums. As for whether they'll continue, I honestly doubt it. I couldn't say it in the article about ''The Source'' since there isn't a reliable source for that, but the magazine itself is essentially dead. They are not publishing new issues, they are not reviewing music. ''XXL'' I believe still publishes new issues, but it's also more or less on life support. And as far I can tell from newer issues I had access to, they stopped writing lengthy reviews, describing albums in 1-2 sentences instead. And on top of that there's a bigger issue with all these publications: there's a severe lack of big names in the industry (or at least people aspiring to be them). Sure, Wikipedia doesn't care who specifically writes a review, as long as it's a reputable publication. But I do. Why should I care if some random person I've never heard of thinks an album is 5 mics/XXL? The only person who comes close right now is Anthony Fantano ↗. People genuinely care what he thinks about albums and what score he gives them. More than a decade later, people still meme about him giving MBDTF ↗ a 6/10.{{pb}}Thank you for your work at German Wikipedia! AstonishingTunesAdmirer ➜ 17:06, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

- Changes to user permissions made from Meta are now included in the local user permissions log (T6055 ↗).
- The autoconfirmed ↗ user group will soon be modified such that the four-day account age requirement begins when an account makes its first edit (T418484 ↗).
20px|alt= ↗ '''Arbitration'''
- The arbitration case ''SchroCat ↗'' has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 15 April.
- Per a recent motion ↗, appeals of blocks from the conflict-of-interest VRT queue ↗ are, by default, appealed on-wiki through the normal unblock process. However, they may be heard by the Committee if COIVRTers disagree on the interpretation of the evidence or believe ArbCom would be better suited to hear the appeal. Administrators are also advised that loosening or lifting such blocks without the consent of someone with access to the queue or ArbCom can be grounds for desysopping.
- Per a recent motion ↗, restrictions issued directly by the Committee may now be enforced with blocks which work exactly like contentious topic blocks.
- The arbitration case ''Maghreb ↗'' has been closed.
class=skin-invert|20px|alt= ↗ '''Miscellaneous'''
- The May 2026 administrator elections ↗ are scheduled to run from April 29 to May 19. The call for candidates ↗ ends May 5.
- The 2026 Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election ↗ is scheduled to run from April 25 to June 1. Candidacy submissions ↗ close on May 10.
- A '''new noticeboard ↗''' for non-urgent, batch page protection requests has been created, primarily for the enforcement of contentious topic restrictions ↗.
