Question about Alex Huber / Bellavista & Open Air
Hi—huge kudos on your article about Alex Huber! I also have a question: over the summer, I’d like to tackle the red links for ''Open Air'' and ''Bellavista''. Do you have any advice regarding which articles on English Wikipedia I could use as a guide for structure and layout? ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 13:28, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
:Thanks @PaulasBunt for that ! I would use other "benchmark" climbing route articles like ''Action Directe (climb) ↗'' and ''Realization (climb) ↗''. Section on the History, the Route, list of Ascents, and its Legacy. if you can get a photo image that would be great. I have never done a big wall climbing ↗ route like Bellavista, but I would follow the same format. There are some photos on WP of the roofs of Bellavista / Panaroma. I would add the Panaroma variation to the Bellavista article (just like with ''Jumbo Love ↗'' and Surpeme Jumbo Love)? Good luck and thanks. Aszx5000 (talk) 14:25, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
::Great (and a little intimidating, but I'll give it a try!) – thank you very much! ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 14:38, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
{{re|Aszx5000}} Thanks for the nudge—that’s great! :) I have relatively little time this summer and still need a bit of time to get into the swing of the routes... but it’s incredibly fun. Hmm, that persistent rumor mill about the broken holds is likely (unfortunately) traceable back to Scherma. It’s a shame he never mentioned when—that is, during which season—he attempted OA... Okay, I’m getting sidetracked again... Thanks for the nudge and for reeling me back in! :))) ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 07:27, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
: {{re|Aszx5000}} Total confusion... Climbing-History lists December 6, 1996, for Huber's Open Air, while Montagna360 cites June 12... (Transposed digits?) Honestly, on that photo of the crux move by Zak, Huber is wearing damn little clothing for December. I've scoured every archive now... nothing... what do you suggest I do in light of this mess? ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 12:36, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
::I'll leave the date out entirely—okay? ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 15:59, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
:::@PaulasBunt Climbing-history is not bad but probably not a bombproof source. I would agree and leave it out and just use 1996. We might find Huber himself visits your article to clarify (I have had that happen on various climbing articles). Aszx5000 (talk) 16:48, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
::::{{re|Aszx5000}} The article is pretty much ready. Could you please take a look to check if the in-wiki links are correct and help expand the "See also" section before I move it to the mainspace? I hope I hit the right tone. The "Legacy" part feels a bit redundant, but I couldn't come up with a better way to phrase it. Also, I deliberately chose to ignore Bisharat (2016); his "hearsay" approach was never picked up by any European climbing magazine back in the 2020s, so I think omitting it is the right call for the ''Open Air'' article. ... Writing this was a lot of fun, but I would have been completely lost without your beta! And, well... ''Bellavista'' might still be a bit too big of a project for now, but ''Qui'' is definitely tempting :) ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 12:01, 20 May 2026 (UTC)
:::::Fantastic job there @PaulasBunt. I made a few edits to clarify some sentences. I understand what you mean about the legacy aspect. Instead of repeating the material on Ondra, you could say a little more about why Huber didn't grade it at 9a+ and his strong views on overgrading here ↗, and here ↗ (there are more). It is ironic that Huber was so hard on himself, and not wanting to over-grade (which is unique in climbing), that he almost wrote himself out of the history books. However, what you have already is very good and a great chronicle of an important route in climbing ! Aszx5000 (talk) 17:57, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
::::::😊 Thanks for the edits—and a huge thank you for helping me sort out my thoughts, or rather, for finding the way to express in the article that specific element I felt was missing—the one that is like the elephant in the room. I’ll be working on it over the next few days, and only then move to mainspace. ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 19:34, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
:::::::{{re|Aszx5000}}: Could you take another look at the revised User:PaulasBunt/Open Air (climb)#Legacy section? I would really appreciate it. The route is simply too important not to have oversight regarding how it is presented. I decided to keep Ondra in the text because—being just 15 years old at the time—he was one of the few people whose experience allowed him to accurately assess grades. And... well, okay, I’ve stepped away from the "Did You Know" tool for the time being; but if you were willing to nominate ''Open Air'', I would be very happy and proud. ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 12:24, 23 May 2026 (UTC)
::::::::I will do that over the next few days, and would be delighted to do that for you ! Aszx5000 (talk) 09:30, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::Perfect, I will wait for your go (move to mainspace). Gripped released an article on 22 May with the best last sentence for the legacy section and I grabbed it. So it is worth waiting and not hurrying as always :) ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 11:28, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
::::::::::@Aszx5000: Hi—and congratulations on the Main Page feature; it’s a very good article! Open Air will remain in draft status, as discussed, until a window of time opens up for you. However, I’ve since moved Qui (climb) ↗ into the mainspace, and I’m not quite sure what to do with the route Wagnis Orange—also discussed within that article—specifically regarding categorization. It was quite a statement back in 1988, but since the article is titled Qui, would a "1988" category be too misleading?
::::::::::No rush at all :) I’m just happy that writing is fun again. ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 14:19, 29 May 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::::I haven't forgotten you and will return to the article on the weekend ! thanks. Aszx5000 (talk) 22:02, 29 May 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::::@PaulasBunt Have made a few minor edits for language and re-ordered some paragraphs for ease of reading, but all good now and have moved it to mainspace and linked it up etc., Fantastic job and a great addition to WikiProject Climbing ! thanks so much. Aszx5000 (talk) 11:36, 30 May 2026 (UTC)
::::::::::::@Aszx5000 I am absolutely blown away by how much your "minor edits" ;) have improved the article, and I feel grateful that you took the matter in hand. As of today, I’m back on duty in Ukraine... hmmm... severe power issues... but once I have a draft ready for "Güllich's Wallstreet", may I reach out to you again? In any case, it was a truly wonderful experience for me. x40px ↗ ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 12:26, 30 May 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::::::My pleasure and would love continue to help you - Wallstreet would be a great addition ! Aszx5000 (talk) 14:16, 30 May 2026 (UTC)
::::::::::::::<small> Today I asked ChatGPT about who climbed the first 9a+ and got a quite detailed answer, which is so different from the 'of course Sharma' from a few days ago. It seems putting effort into the Wiki project ( = to put the record straight) is more important now than it was perhaps a few years ago :)</small> ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 15:07, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
:::::::::::::::You did it in many cases!! ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 15:36, 2 June 2026 (UTC)
{{ping|User:Aszx5000}} Hi. I’m actually dealing with heart palpitations right now :) even though I was already in contact with Alex back in 2018 regarding Commons. (We didn’t have a photo of him on the Wiki, and I was fed up with constantly having to delete copyrighted images at those times.) He wrote today about Open Air—it was on June 12th—and asked if he could send me further corrections. Should I forward that email to you as well once I receive it? ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 20:23, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
:Oh cool - actually, post it (and all future discussion) on the talk page of the article so that we have the record. He has a biography, so hopefully we can use that as reference (ask him what page it is on his bio). Would be fantastic if he could donate some photo(s) to Wikicommons that we could use ! Well done ! Aszx5000 (talk) 21:22, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
::{{ping|User:Aszx5000}} There don't seem to be any photos; he sidestepped the question, and I'm letting it go—after all, he had already donated back in 2018. He did send his climbing list, though, which I’ve saved here in a completely chaotic format; I’m still a bit at a loss as to what to do with it—should I enter everything and look up the missing sources, or be selective? I’ll ask you again once I’m back from my trip east, which will cut me off from reliable internet access for the next few weeks. It’s a shame I couldn't get more out of him, but he did write that we can ask about the climbs at any time. Oh well—not that it’ll help much, right? ⁓☆⁓⁓ PaulasBunt (talk) 18:12, 19 June 2026 (UTC)
