Happy new year 2025, opened with trumpet fanfares that first sounded OTD in 1725 (as the Main page had). My story today is about a composer who influenced music history also by writing. Thanks to MONTENSEM the article developed nicely. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:02, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

... and today, pictured on the Main page ↗, Tosca ↗, in memory of her first appearance on stage OTD in 1900, and of principal author Brian Boulton. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:27, 14 January 2025 (UTC)

Today, between many who just died, Tobias Kratzer ↗ on his 45th birthday who was good for an unusual DYK mentioning a Verdi opera in 2018, - you can see his work in the trailer of another one that I saw, and my talk page has a third (but by a different director). 2025 pics, finally. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:11, 17 January 2025 (UTC)

Today I have a composer ↗ (trumpeter, conductor) on the main page who worked closely with another ↗ who became GA yesterday, - small world! To celebrate: mostly flowers pics from vacation ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:56, 20 January 2025 (UTC)

Wikivoice

Hey there. You've made two edits to text I've written (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=January_2025_Southern_California_wildfires&diff=prev&oldid=1268510963 ↗https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=January_2025_Southern_California_wildfires&diff=prev&oldid=1268862321 ↗) just saying "WP:WIKIVOICE ↗". I felt the text was a fairly good summary of the sources but I'd like to hear you thoughts. Citing (talk) 02:17, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

:According to WP:VOICE ↗, editors must "avoid stating opinions as facts". WP:CRYSTALBALL ↗ further states that citations from "expert sources" are welcomed, but that "editors should be aware of creating undue bias to any specific point of view". Perhaps climate change may ultimately be determined as a contributing factor to the recent windstorm and consequent wildfires, but the investigations into these have only just begun. Therefore, until the causes and contributing factors of the wildfires are officially determined, opinions by other uninvolved people—regardless of their knowledge or qualifications—must be clearly stated as such in the article. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 02:59, 12 January 2025 (UTC)

Regarding interestingness

Hey there CurryTime. I hope this request isn't much of a bother considering what's going on right now, but is it okay if you help explain Gerda, perhaps on her talk page, how interestingness works in the context of DYK hooks? Interestingness, or more specifically meeting WP:DYKINT ↗, has been a recurring issue with her nomination for years, and from experience it seems that she has had difficulty understanding the guideline and implementing it in her hooks. Given that you are her colleague in classical music article writing and also a DYK regular, I was wondering if you could be able to explain DYKINT to her in a way she could understand (as in why editors find her hooks problematic per the guideline), and perhaps even guide her how to hooks that better fit the guidelines. Not just DYKINT but perhaps also DYKTRIM. Thank you! <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 23:10, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
: What in that I will never understand how "a Spanish mezzo-soprano" or "opera debut" would be more interesting than "as Carmen" did you not understand? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:25, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
: ps: trim?
: ... that '''Ana María Iriarte ↗''' ''(pictured)'' made her professional opera debut in 1945, retired from the stage in 1960, and created a foundation promoting zarzuela ↗ in 2006?
: ... that '''Ana María Iriarte ↗''' ''(pictured)'' retired from the stage as Carmen ↗ in 1960, but created a foundation promoting zarzuela ↗ in 2006?
: I believe that the second is shorter, more quirky (by just two dates to think about) and more interesting. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:32, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
::: Can we agree that "... that '''Ana María Iriarte ↗''' retired from the stage in 1960, but created a foundation in 2006?" is hooky and will be understood by readers? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:00, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
::::I'll be frank here: the more this goes on, the more I think it would have been better to just go with the El soñador angle. It would have surely gotten more readership than what has been approved and promoted. <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 11:42, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
::::: Why would anybody be interested in a woman just because she played in a piece a few decades not played? It says nothing about this woman. So not me. Long life, long time between retirement and something beneficial for her country: that sunds much more uniques to me. Also: I asked CT if we can agree. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:12, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::Like a lot of your hooks, these are factoids or even capsule summaries of their subject's articles. I also know that it's important to you that your hooks positively reflect their DYK subject. However, that's not always what would hypothetically attract a reader unfamiliar with the subject. The fact that the guidelines use the term "hook" speaks for itself. This is why I keep bringing up its definition, because I believe there is a fundamental misunderstanding of its meaning that leads to a misinterpretation of guidelines. A "hook", by definition, is supposed to "sell" one on something, even by unusual or deceptive means. None of these hooks, at least to me, achieve that.
::::::This isn't a slight against your articles, which are always well-written and sourced. Your work brightens up Wikipedia, especially classical music-related subjects, which often are in need of the loving attention you devote to them. If only you could understand the purpose of a DYK hook, then we could make of your dazzling silver into something truly golden.
::::::By the way, if I can ever be of assistance to you in devising hooks, please don't hesitate to ask me. I'm always honored and delighted to collaborate with you. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 20:18, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::: I was trained (from 2009) that it is "Did you know?" - stress on ''know''. For Iriarte, I am sorry that I missed the deadline for RD where her unusual name alone would have received 6k clicks, - unlikely for DYK. I am not willing to "sell" a woman whose memory should be remembered. Back to the question: is early retirement and beneficial in old age a hook or not? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:40, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::Her name is ''not'' unusual at all (native Spanish-speaker of Basque descent, whose family originated from a country full of Basque immigrants ↗ here!). I've already given my opinion about the above hooks, as well as the compromise version. Again, I'm a devoted admirer of your great work here. I'm concerned, however, that you appear to not misunderstand, but may instead be unwilling to accept the definition of "hook" and, therefore, the intent of the DYK guidelines. That is the persistent issue here. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 21:56, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::Funnily enough, I actually have a niece named Carmen, so it's not as if it's an unfamiliar name to me. It's just that, as CurryTime said, just the name alone isn't going to attract readership. Just because she played a role named Carmen doesn't mean people will want to know more about her for that reason. CurryTime is saying that you have to attract readers with hooks that would attract even people who know nothing about opera and classical music, and this has been a recurring issue with your hooks for years. I already gave several easy examples before of what it means to make a "hooky" hook that meets the guidelines and I don't understand why you are having difficulty understanding the concept. <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 22:27, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::: (ec) Sorry, you got me wrong, both. Let's have a look at RD:
::::::::::# Jean-Louis Pichon ↗ 6,332 ↗ yesterday, 12,322 over the month
::::::::::# Edesio Alejandro ↗ 8,101 ↗ peak, 23,324 month
::::::::::# Simon Lindley ↗ 7,837 ↗, 18,950 month
:::::::::: You can check the others. They get clicked by the name alone. It's rewarding. No waste of time thinking about a sentence, no waste of time arguing. Only: for Iriarte I missed the deadline, and thought DYK is better than nothing, and I'll waste my time to achieve that. I hope it will not happen often because life is too short. - The DYK credit still says "Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page." It says "fact". Perhaps that should be rephrased, if factual information is no longer the goal. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:39, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::::Factual information is and will always be the goal, but per your aforementioned quote it must be an ''interesting'' fact. WP:DYK'''HOOK''' ↗ also states that you must include a fact in the hook, not that the hook must simply state a fact. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:23, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::::I think the issue here is that what Gerda considers interesting is different from how WP:DYKG ↗ defines "interesting". It's already explained in detail in WP:DYKINT ↗ (hooks must be plausibly interesting or unusual to '''non-specialist audiences'''), but Gerda does not follow that guideline in her hooks. Gerda's interpretation of the guideline is that hooks are based on what she believes readers ''should'' know, DYKINT suggests writing hooks that would make readers ''want'' to know. These goals do not always coincide, leading in many cases to hooks that largely appeal to Gerda herself but baffle general readers and often even her fellow classical music editor collegaues. As such, there is a fundamental difference in how the guideline is understood, and that is something that needs to be resolved.
::::::::::::Based on this discussion above, it appears that she has difficulty understanding the guideline and its requirements as written. CurryTime, if you don't mind, could you explain DYKINT specifically in a clearer way to Gerda? <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 01:31, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::::Also, I don't follow your point about these individuals' names, which are not "unusual" at all. Even if they were, they are not relevant to DYK hook polices. (Unless the hooks had something to do with their names.) —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:33, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::::: I still don't think you got what I was saying. For the three people (and more than 20 others in 2025), I expanded the article, received a few supports, and then the name (and nothing else) was mentioned for fine view counts. For Iriarte, I came too late (because it was a new article from scratch of two authors, + real life). Now I am stuck with DYK, a place I came to avoid as no longer interested in unusual facts ''about the person'' (or how else would I understand a hook about a piece not played for a while, which is completely accidental to her life achievements). She gave to human culture, substantially, and I find ''that'' interesting. Out for the day. Please, at some point, answer the simple question if, for the uninitiated reader, Carmen ↗ would sound more interesting than a general "opera". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:53, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::::::::To answer your question personally (I do not know if CurryTime has a different opinion), '''no: it does not'''. To the average reader, Carmen is just a name. They ''might'' recognize it if they know the Carmen Overture, but even if they do, just the name alone won't make a hook inherently interesting, any more than a hook mentioning Hamlet without additional context. No one (except maybe you) is going to click on a hook saying "Did you know that Jasmine Doe played the role of Carmen in 2025?" They ''might'', however, click on a hook saying "Did you know that Jasmine Doe, a professional tennis player, played the role of Carmen in a 2025 production at the Sydney Opera House?", not because of the name "Carmen", but because of the ''context'' behind Doe's performance ''as'' Carmen. It is the contrast between her regular career (as a tennis player) and what she did (performing opera) that makes the hook interesting, '''not the mention of Carmen'''.
:::::::::::::Gerda, at this point, I think you have to understand if not accept that DYK is not about highlighting summaries of people's lives or careers. It's about highlighting an interesting or unusual fact about them that would make readers want to know more about the subject. Again, even if said hook may seem "incidental" to their overall lives, if that is something that would make people want to know more, then that's how DYK works. Gerda, you are DYK's most prolific and experienced contributor, someone respected by editors both within and outside the project. It should be you who would best understand how DYKINT works. It's been a recurring issue with your hooks for years, one that has been brought up by multiple editors (not just myself). Please Gerda, understand where we are coming from. Read CurryTime and 4meter4's comments over the years on how to make a good, interesting hook. It isn't that difficult, especially with your experience in writing articles. <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 11:33, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::::::@Gerda Arendt Naruto answered your question better than I could have. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 17:09, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::::::: I hope I will remember to stay away from DYK. Life is too short. I wanted to nominate a soprano today but would have to work for hours to find sources that please 4meter4, and then would have to argue with you for more hours to say something ''about her'': no. I don't have the time. It's sad because women are underrepresented. Working on Sofia Gubaidulina ↗ was great collaboration. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:19, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::::::::::::Gerda, if you don't mind, what do you find so difficult to understand about WP:DYKINT ↗: "The hook should be likely to be perceived as unusual or intriguing by readers with no special knowledge or interest in the topic?" If you're willing to learn and please, we can explain the guideline to you in an easy-to-understand manner. I'm not getting where you're coming from regarding you being unable to say something about a woman, because when writing hooks about a woman, we still write something ''about'' them, it's just that it's not necessarily the thing they're best known for. What is the difference for you between "... that Jennifer Doe played Aida at the Oper Frankfurt in 2025?" and "... that operatic soprano Jennifer Doe is part of an esports team?" Both hooks still say something ''about'' Doe, so I don't understand what you mean by hooks that aren't ''about'' them. <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 20:44, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
::A plain outline of facts, some of which may not be readily understood by all readers, neither makes for an effective DYK hook nor meets the criteria of WP:DYKINT ↗. Whether one agrees or not with the idea of "selling" a DYK subject, the hook is expected to do that, according to the guidelines. They are based on the dictionary definition of the colloquial use of "hook" in this context. It would be different if the guidelines referred instead to DYK "factoids" ↗. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:54, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
:::In this case, maybe an explanation of why mentioning Carmen would not be the best option may be needed. <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 01:24, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
::::The biggest reason why, aside from the reason I explained elsewhere, is that it overloads the hook. I get why one would want to squeeze in as much info as possible into a hook. Sometimes, I'm guilty of doing that. However, the more concise, the more effective a hook can be. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 19:47, 14 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::To be honest, I'm really confused by Gerda's argument. Oftentimes, she wants to highlight women (or men) playing specific roles because she believes that them playing said roles is unique, but in most cases the subjects aren't even the only people to play said roles, and neither the hooks nor the articles actually describe how such performances were any different from other performances of said role. For example, what would make Alyssa Anderson's performance as Carmen any more unique or special from Brittany Baker's? Even in this discussion, with Gerda's attachment to Iriarte's performance as Carmen, she does not even explain exactly ''how or why'' Iriarte's specific performance as Carmen is any more unique from the many women who've played the role over the years (apart from it being her last role, but that's not about her performance itself). I'm genuinely confused by her argument and am willing to learn her side: to her, is the actor playing the role itself what makes the performance special or unique, and not ''how'' they played the role? <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 20:55, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::: Repeating: I hope I will remember to stay away from DYK. Life is too short. Working on Sofia Gubaidulina ↗ was great collaboration. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:14, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::Gerda, we are willing to hear from you and learn your side. We just want to know: why specifically is Carmen so special to you, and why is it that it is Iriarte's performance as Carmen that you want to highlight and not her other roles? <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 02:40, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
:::::::: I'd love to mention more than one role ;) - I picked Carmen as from Spain, FA, lead role, well-known, intricate story, choice for farewell, - all more interesting in my book, and more precise about this singer, than some general "opera". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:36, 25 March 2025 (UTC)

Easter Oratorio

We had an edit conflict, and this ↗ was my latest version. In a nutshell:
# The cantata and the secular model were planned from the start to have the same music. From which follows that the observations about the same metre etc. belong to the cantata (not the oratorio).
# The Oratorio was not really different music from the Cantata, just instrumentation - text - no character names.

I will not revert you because instability isn't what we want for GA ambitions, - please check and make changes yourself. I need sleep and will travel over the weekend. Kindly use the Wolf source that I can see. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:14, 10 April 2025 (UTC)

:Wolff says differently. According to him, extant evidence suggests that it was only while composing the ''Christmas Oratorio'' that JSB began to think about composing the ''Easter Oratorio'', which then developed into a trilogy. To be honest, I've only heard the ''Easter Oratorio'' once, at a live performance about over a decade ago; its predecessor works are totally unknown to me. So please don't think that I'm trying to push a personal point-of-view, because I don't even have one for this work. I also don't want to step on anybody's toes here. The article is really fine otherwise. It's just that when I cracked open the Wolff book, some of what he said happened to be different from what is in the article. Honestly, I didn't want to get deeply involved with this article. My only intent was to contribute something from which a suitable DYK hook could be extracted. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 22:24, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
:: Please read Leisinger, for the quote you requested, p. VII "The fair copy, one of Bach's most beautiful manuscripts, will be published for the first time in facsimile", and for the rest. Forget DYK. (With an instable article, it will not be GA, and without GA there will not be DYK.) I need sleep. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:34, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
:::Unfortunately, what I intended to be a small patch job for the sake of a DYK nom has now turned into something more extensive. Hopefully, I'll be out of your hair soon. As they say (in Russia), "if the claw is stuck, the whole bird is lost". (-______-) —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 22:53, 10 April 2025 (UTC)
:::: Without having read this: I woke up early, so made changes I saw necessary. Bach's music is my prime importance, not what Wolff and Leisinger say ;) - DYK - if there was one - could say ... that the music of Bach's Easter Oratorio ↗ was performed for Easter 1725, seven years before he even thought of oratorios? ... almost 10 years before the Christmas Oratorio was first performed? - I still think that the first clever collaboration would be a better information. Off to travel, by car, so unconnected, with friends, - more important! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:20, 11 April 2025 (UTC)
::::Just to clarify CT, did Gerda's response address your concerns regarding the apparent conflation, or do those concerns remain? Given that it does appear to be a significant issue, that will need to be resolved before any further work on the nomination is done. <B><span style="color:#0038A8">Naruto</span><span style="color:#FCD116">love</span><span style="color:#CE1126">hinata</span>5</B> (talk · contributions ↗) 00:14, 12 April 2025 (UTC)

Looking for feedback/insight on names of works

Hi -- I just ran across a comment you made last year on the AfD for ''El Camino Real'' ↗ (about it being a "composition", not a "song") and thought you might be able to answer a couple of questions about music and the encyclopedia.

First, Is there a standard definition as to what distinguishes a song from a composition? Length, classical vs. pop, division into movements, a subjective judgment on the depth of the work, or ...? (as a comparison point, "Paprika Plains ↗" by Joni Mitchell is six minutes longer than ''El Camino Real'', and could be said to be divisible into movements.) And: are compositions always italicized on WP?

Thanks in advance; this hits two of my interests: music and wikignomery. Regards, NapoliRoma (talk) 05:22, 28 September 2025 (UTC)

:A song is a short piece of music wherein words are set to music. What "short" is can be variable, however, and there are a number of notable pop songs that last longer than the typical length of around three minutes (e.g. "MacArthur Park ↗", "Purple Rain ↗", "Champagne Supernova ↗", etc.). Songs also typically do not have the kind of motivic, structural, or harmonic development that one hears in a composition. Popular discourse tends to refer to ''all'' musical creations as "songs". But this would be like calling all texts "poems", regardless of whether the text in question is in fact a novel, historical annal, political tract, or news article.
:While there are guidelines on how to write about music on Wikipedia, they are not exhaustive. For work, I have long personally relied on D. Kern Holoman ↗'s ''Writing About Music: A Style Sheet''; it is my reference for editing here as well.
:Composition titles are italicized only when they are not generic. So Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 ↗, Piano Sonata No. 30 ↗, and String Quartet No. 13 ↗ are not italicized, but his ''Christ on the Mount of Olives ↗'', ''Choral Fantasy ↗'', and ''An die ferne Geliebte ↗'' are. Hope this helps. Happy editing! —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 17:07, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
::A belated "thank you" for your reply—especially the pointer to Holoman, because: wow. I also realized I hadn't looked very hard for existing guidelines on Wikipedia, and now see that there is at least some discussion of this at WP:Manual of Style/Music ↗.
::But one interesting (to me, at least) gray area I see is marches. From what I've read, I'd say these should be treated as non-song compositions (although TIL ''Stars and Stripes Forever ↗'' has official lyrics!) and italicized, but the vast majority of march articles I've seen have their titles in quotation marks.
::Do you have a thought on this? Should I open a discussion at MoS/Music? Thanks again, NapoliRoma (talk) 19:05, 18 October 2025 (UTC)
:::Now it's ''my'' turn to send a belated reply! You're right about marches. I haven't helped with this inconsistency, unfortunately. Both of my march articles are styled differently. There ought to be consistency. A discussion on this would be helpful. Thanks for your work! :) —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 21:18, 20 November 2025 (UTC)

Ludwig/Tiffany Personal Life Content

Hi, I keep removing the personal life section on both Ludwig Kaiser and Tiffany Stratton's pages because there is evidence they are not together. Not sure how to source it properly but all images, videos and TikToks of the two together have been removed from Tiffany's social media. A few months ago on Logan Paul's podcast, she did not reference him as her plus one to his wedding. Since it's unclear, and yes, they once dated and that was confirmed, I think it makes the most sense to just remove the content overall. https://www.instagram.com/tiffanywwe/?hl=en ↗
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJvU_dVIvsE&t=5297s 72.69.80.114 ↗ (talk) 20:13, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

:I get where you're coming from and, honestly, your guess is probably correct. But it appears to only be a guess — that's the issue. What is needed is a source that explicitly states that they are no longer together. A social media post from their personal accounts would do just fine here. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 20:18, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
::Thanks for your response. Would it make sense though since it's a grey area, to just remove the section entirely? It could be months, years or even never that it's explicitly said they are not together. You can make an argument for both sides even without a source. 72.69.80.114 ↗ (talk) 20:26, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
:::No. According to the MOS, this kind of content removal would only be acceptable if reliable sources demonstrate it to be false. Even if new information is published that shows they are no longer dating, that information could only be modified, not removed altogether. In other words, the article would still have to show they ''had'' dated as this is pertinent biographical information that is confirmed by reliable sources. You may want to discuss this matter with other editors WP:TEAHOUSE ↗ as they may be able to provide you with more detailed guidance. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 20:31, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
:::Even if they did break up, why remove it? It's correctly sourced, and is true, that'd be pure censorship, to which Wikipedia is not. Lemonademan22 (talk) 22:25, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

Onosato edit

You may have thought you were "fixing" something but the point of the wiki comment notes around the Onosato Daiki ↗ article's section emphasizing a putative "Rivalry with Takerufuji" was to hide that section until such time as a sustained rivalry deserving special note may actually emerge while leaving it intact with references for such a time.

As things are Takerufuji is ranked too low to again face Onosato for quite some time and we don't know that the predictions will ever come true.&#126;2025-32010-23 ↗ (talk) 06:33, 13 November 2025 (UTC)

<!-- Start of message --> I looked at many similar lists of classical music pieces and can’t see where my list differs from the picture except being more functional. Here is a more detailed description of the issue at hand:About lists of classical music pieces. Eg

List of compositions by (any famous and not so famous composer)
Same table format as my list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compositions_by_Kaija_Saariaho
Same time period, but you can’t sort this list. Saariaho list is more functional:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compositions_by_Arvo_Pärt

About the use of the word notably: these two authors were the most famous ones of their time writing in that genre. Please see how the word notably has been used in official Wikipedia instruction text: “Some lists, such as List of numbers, are intentionally inexhaustive, as they are only meant to list notable examples from a given category. “
About the phrase “The duet genre holds a special place in classical music”, that’s why i have three supporting independent quotations following that statement right away to show that this importance is multifacet.

:Because an article that may defy the rules exists, that doesn't mean that ''this'' one can. Please read WP:OTHERCONTENT ↗ to understand what I mean.
:There's nothing wrong with the word "notable" itself. However, depending on the context, it may need to be attributed ↗ so that its subjective opinion isn't stated in wikivoice. In other words, you can write something like: "According to the musicologist Hemiola Sultasto, Rebecca Clarke's ''Three Irish Songs'' were a notable development in the genre of music for voice and solo instrument". But you can't just write that something was notable. That's just your personal opinion. Even if it were true, without proper attribution and citations, it would still be considered original research ↗.
:Your draft, by the way, also includes several external links in the article body. These need to be reconfigured into proper citations or dropped according to WP:NOELBODY ↗. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 21:35, 20 November 2025 (UTC)

Plot consensus

Hiya CurryTime, we have worked together before on a film plot and reached consensus on Ship of Fools, which I found informative and useful. I wonder if you could share a third option on a film plot I'm endeavouring to improve. Lethal Weapon ↗. After watching it this week, some of the events described in the plot are simply, inaccurate, as well has using non-encyclopaedic language which reads more like in-world detective lingo. I've worked with one editor to smooth out the wrinkles but another just blanket reverts (maybe a case of ownership?) while changing goalposts. I'm attempting to rewrite the corrections to make it more amenable, and I know you strive to collaborate and seek a working consensus in these matters.Halbared (talk) 09:33, 19 November 2025 (UTC)

You reverted my edits on Dmitri Shostakovich ↗

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitri_Shostakovich
Could you please be polite and explain, what was wrong with my additions, such the original Polish spelling of his last name? ApoieRacional (talk) 23:57, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

:Your additions were in unidiomatic, possibly machine-translated English. As for the spelling of Shostakovich's name, the Polish surname is irrelevant. He was a Russian, then later Soviet citizen. He was not Polish. For what it's worth, he accused the jury at the I International Chopin Piano Competition ↗ of being biased against him for being Russian. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 01:51, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
::I did not use AI to write that. I am now puzzled, why it seems to you, that I did.
::Someone else used the proper Latin-font spelling of his last name "Szostakowicz" in Biography/Youth section, so I am not going to argue with you about it. ApoieRacional (talk) 02:28, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
:::Your English doesn't read idiomatically. At the very least, it doesn't read like it's your first language. I agree that there's nothing to argue about. Bolesław Szostakowicz was indeed Polish. His grandson, the composer Dmitri, however, was not. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 02:47, 21 December 2025 (UTC)

:I would like to note that the surname Shostakovich is traditionally Belarusian, not Polish. The section of the article devoted to Shostakovich's origins contains factual inaccuracies. I suggest comparing it with the corresponding section in the Russian-language Wikipedia, where his family background and the origin of the surname are described in more detail with many sources.&#126;2025-42269-79 ↗ (talk) 22:39, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
::This may be true, but neither of the cited sources mentions this Byelorussian ancestry. I haven't read Khentova's biography in a while, but my recollection is that she also didn't mention this ancestry. (She said something to the effect that according to family legend, the Shostakoviches originated from a Mikhail Shostakovich who served in the court of Vasili III Ivanovich ↗). If you have a reputable source ↗ that confirms Byelorussian ancestry, please feel free to cite and add it to the article. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 22:48, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
:::Please take a look at the section about D.D. Shostakovich ancestry, that I translated from the Russian Wiki. I did use Google AI for the first round of translation, but then I spent a lot of time on humanly fixing it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:ApoieRacional/sandbox
:::If you feel, that it still uncomfortable for reading, please go ahead and improve the draft. I am not the right person for this task, because I have changed a lot, and it seems acceptable to me. You can make more productive contributions to Wikipedia, if you start Writing instead of Deleting. Apparently, you have some ideas how to improve Shostakovich Ancestry section, Why not do it? Please note, that deletionism-above-collaboration practice would impede new article creation and improving/updating existing articles. Is this where we want to go? ApoieRacional (talk) 00:32, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
::::Because I am just a volunteer here, like you. And although I've been here for almost 14 years and perhaps have made a few "productive contributions" here and there, I don't have time to devote myself to Wikipedia. For now, I contribute to the Shostakovich article by at least keeping it as tidy until a major rewrite/improvement can finally be made, whether by me or another knowledgeable editor. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:40, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
:::::I appreciate you getting back to me. Let me rephrase my question:
:::::What policy would be better for the benefit of mankind:
:::::a) keep Wikipedia articles intact for years, by preventing good faith edits and collaborative efforts;
:::::b) allow new users to publish new edits, and only reverse apparent inaccuracies/vandalism, thus allowing new editors to improve and to build on the works of old editors?
:::::You are more experienced, than I am. Is there a clear wiki-policy of this issue? ApoieRacional (talk) 00:50, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
::::::Buddy, I encourage you to seek guidance at WP:TEAHOUSE ↗. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:54, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
:::::::Honestly, it feels like you are trying to dodge my question instead of engaging into a productive discussion. Guest what I found, there is a Wiki-Policy about it:
:::::::WP:NOTCOMP ApoieRacional (talk) 01:08, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
::::::::Again, I encourage you to seek help elsewhere. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 01:15, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
::The surname Shostakovich (Шостакович) is listed as a typical Belarusian patronymic in B. O. Unbegaun, Russian Surnames: https://archive.org/details/russiansurnames/page/n239/mode/2up. Attributing Polish or Lithuanian roots is understandable, but unlikely to reflect historical reality. The territories historically inhabited by Belarusians were part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was in a political union with the Kingdom of Poland. As a result, Belarusians on their ancestral lands are often assigned either to present-day Lithuania or Poland, depending on the interpretation. &#126;2025-42269-79 ↗ (talk) 23:56, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
:::This may be so, but no major English or Russian source on Shostakovich mentions anything about Byelorussian ancestry. Shostakovich himself occasionally mentioned his Polish ancestry; sometimes others remarked that he possessed traits that seemed characteristically "Polish". (e.g. Georgy Sviridov ↗ in ''Music as Destiny''). But if he was aware of Byelorussian ancestry, he appears to never have made note of that in writing or conversation. —CurryTime7-24 (talk) 00:26, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
::::His great-grandfather, who gave him the surname, Fyodor Mikhailovich Shostakovich (Фёдор Михайлович Шостакович), bears a name, patronymic, and surname typical of Belarusians and originates from historical Belarusian lands. He is one of eight great-grandparents. His wife, Maria-Yuzefa Yasinskaya (Мария-Юзефа Ясинская), judging by her name, was likely of Polish origin. For the other six great-grandparents, we have no information. Dmitri Shostakovich himself may have identified differently at various times (e.g., Siberian, Russian, Soviet). Therefore, I believe the article should include both information about the Belarusian origin of his surname and about his great-grandfather, the earliest ancestor who gave him his surname, for whom there is information in authoritative sources.&#126;2025-42269-79 ↗ (talk) 01:08, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
:::::I agree with you. Citizenship-wise D.D. Shostakovich was a Soviet composer, but he had an interesting ethnic heritage, and it is worth mentioning on Wiki. BTW, most of my American musician friends, thought that D.D. Shostakovich was Jewish. It is another reason to have this paragraph. ApoieRacional (talk) 01:16, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

20 January is the 100th birthday of David Tudor ↗ (see my story) and the 300th birthday of Bach's cantata Meine Seufzer, meine Tränen, BWV 13 ↗, if we go by date instead of occasion as he would have thought, so see my story for last Sunday, and celebrate ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:46, 20 January 2026 (UTC)

Thank you for expanding and fixing Jubilant Sykes ↗ while I was enjoying vacation all day, - I am sorry I couldn't help. When I returned there was Richie Beirach ↗ in need of refs ... - When I update an article for the main page, I usually just take what was there, for lack of time. I'll think about that when there's no lack of time, whenever that may be. For an article linked from the main page, can you please discuss on the talk instead of tags. It was almost pulled, after having waited for weeks to appear in February. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:37, 4 February 2026 (UTC)

To answer one of your questions in edit summaries: it was the source that only said "Mahler's orchestral songs", and I grabbed the first link coming to my mind of what that might mean, - perhaps I should have left it without a link? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 00:08, 5 February 2026 (UTC)

Tamás Vásáry ↗ today, who began his career with a Mozart concerto at age 8. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:06, 12 February 2026 (UTC)

Giants today, RD Helmuth Rilling ↗ and OTD Friedrich Cerha ↗ 100. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:51, 17 February 2026 (UTC)

Today something new: a 100th birthday of someone alive, György Kurtág ↗! In 2004 I was there when he and his wife played for the Rheingau Musik Festival ↗ where he was the featured composer. They played as the 2019 DYK said, on an upright piano, - listen, the last piece was the same. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:37, 19 February 2026 (UTC)

Today's main page ↗ features four biographies I helped to bring there, two women and two men, three opera singers (one pictured) and an actor, - a record for me, I believe ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:43, 24 February 2026 (UTC)

Hello {{BASEPAGENAME}},

thumb|400px|New Page Review queue November 2025 - May 2026 ↗

'''Backlog update'''

At the time of this message, there are 15,282 articles and 32,951 redirects awaiting review.

After the January–February drive the article backlog was reduced to 15,179 articles and the redirect backlog to 19,053 respectively. Great job! However, both queues are growing rapidly and any additional reviews are highly appreciated.

'''2024 and 2025 NPP Awards'''

74px|left ↗{{no ping|JTtheOG}} was selected as the NPP reviewer of the year for both 2024 and 2025, for reviewing the most articles amongst all reviewers.
{{no ping|Hey man im josh}} and {{no ping|MPGuy2824}} won the Redirect Ninja Master Award for 2024 and 2025 respectively, for reviewing the most redirects.

Overall in 2024, one Platinum, two Gold, eight Silver, 12 Bronze and 45 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 66 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year. In 2025, one Platinum, ten Silver, 13 Bronze and 38 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 38 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year.

{{no ping|BoyTheKingCanDance}}, {{no ping|Rosiestep}}, {{no ping|SunDawn}}, and {{no ping|Vanderwaalforces}} were inducted into the NPP Hall of Fame ↗ for having two separate years of 2,000+ article reviews.

'''January–February backlog drive'''

The experimental two-month long backlog drive concluded with 183 reviewers patrolling over 27,761 articles and 35,309 redirects, earning over 36,836 points. Congratulations to {{no ping|JTtheOG}}, who achieved first place with 6,484.6 points in this drive.

'''May backlog drive'''

An article-only backlog drive is currently underway. We are hoping to make a big dent in the backlog. You can read more about it or join at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/May 2026 ↗.

'''PageTriage'''

An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed ↗ to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket ↗ if you're interested in following along.
