Happy editing! <!-- Template:Welcome--> <span style="font-family:default;color:#00c6ff;">''Liliana''</span><span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS;color:#ff879a;">''UwU''</span> <sup>(talk / contribs ↗)</sup> 02:44, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
:@LilianaUwU Thanks... I'm not completely new, but thanks for the welcome. I have a couple of hundred edits under (probably) two IP addresses. But I figured it was time for an account... David10244 (talk) 02:48, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
::Yeah, I'm aware that you've edited under IP addresses before. We already interacted. :P <span style="font-family:default;color:#00c6ff;">''Liliana''</span><span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS;color:#ff879a;">''UwU''</span> <sup>(talk / contribs ↗)</sup> 02:49, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
:::I thought we had... :-) David10244 (talk) 02:50, 24 September 2022 (UTC)
:::@LilianaUwU I just noticed that one of the two IP addresses that I edited under, before making an account, had exactly 500 edits. That's weird! Then either my IP address changed, or I made this account. I didn't realize that I had edited so much with that IP. And no reverts, I think. I don't have a question or anything; I just thought that was interesting. David10244 (talk) 08:08, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
David in the millions
Welcome to the clan. In the U.S. it was very popular 1940-1980, has since dropped off. According to the Wikipedia article David (name) ↗, tens of millions of males are named David in English, and more in variants in other languages. The article could use referenced updating at the statistics section. David notMD (talk) 11:45, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
:@David notMD My parents told me that the name means "beloved", as that article says. Some people do like me! Wait, what's this: "David ... means "beloved", derived from the root dôwd (דּוֹד), which originally meant "to boil"..."
:To ''boil''? That's weird! David10244 (talk) 09:53, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
re committed ID
Just to clarify something in response to this edit ↗ (whose thread has since been archived): I was not advising against committed identities ''in general''. In fact, I encourage the use of committed identities, and I have one on my user page. I was advising against ''the specific scheme'' proposed by the OP (based around a physical Brazilian ID etc.), which is outside the standard process listed at Wikipedia:Committed identity ↗, and would make verification much harder than needed. <span style="font-family:Tahoma;color:#008000;">Tigraan</span><span title="Send me a silicium letter!" style="color:">Click here for my talk page ("private" contact)</span> 09:01, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
:@Tigraan Oh, I see. That makes sense -- I wouldn't use a nonstandard method to create a committed identity. I get what you meant by "standard process now. Thanks for explaining that. David10244 (talk) 09:46, 5 October 2022 (UTC)

New editors and new articles
I saw your discussion at WP:VPP ↗. I wonder if this chart would be helpful.{{Registered editors by edit count}}At the moment, only 5% of all registered editors are able to create articles directly in the mainspace here at the English Wikipedia (and almost none of them actually do, either through a lack of interest or because they've stopped editing entirely).
The question is: How many fewer do you really want to have that ability? WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:07, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
:@WhatamIdoing, that is a ''very'' interesting chart. Does "top x ... of all editors" mean "all editors who have created an article that has not been deleted (in some short time frame)"? If not, then maybd it doesn't apply to the issue of article creation. But I'll think about it.
:I find it kind of hard to believe that some significant fraction of editors have created an article that sticks, as their first edit (or their first set of edits). It's also kind of hard (is it possible?) to write a new draft and submit it for review, and have one total edit at the point of submission. (That situation also means that they have not put anything on their Talk page either, which is OK, but...)
:Do we know how many editors have one edit when they Submit? Those 50% are not creating new articles, so the chart is not completely relevant, I think. I could be wrong. David10244 (talk) 10:26, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
::This chart counts all registered editors, including accounts that have never made any edits at the English Wikipedia (e.g., someone who edits in a different language, but read an article; someone who doesn't edit but wanted access to a setting in the prefs; someone who wanted to edit but who couldn't figure out how to do it) and accounts that haven't edited for many years (e.g., due to losing the password, or losing interest).
::About a decade ago (I've not heard anything more recent) about a quarter of all first edits was to create an article in the mainspace. Almost all first edits were in the mainspace. Wikipedia:Request a query ↗ might be able to give you more recent numbers. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:01, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
:::@WhatamIdoing OK, thanks. David10244 (talk) 10:49, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
Reply
On the teahouse, someone asked a pointless question on the teahouse asking what 1 plus 1 was? It is easy to figure it out. I'm replying on here because the discussion got closed. It is my first seeing a discussion on the teahouse get closed. Cwater1 (talk) 04:14, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
:@Cwater1 Threads at the Teahouse don't usually get closed in my experience -- they are archived pretty quickly. Threads at other places get closed more often... especially for "unblock requests" and sometimes at wp:afchelp. But, yeah, sometimes at the Teahouse. David10244 (talk) 04:46, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
::That conversation where someone asked what 1 plus 1 is could have been removed since it was not necessary. Cwater1 (talk) 23:13, 27 February 2023 (UTC)
:::@Cwater1 Questions aren't usually removed though, even those questions that are gibberish (this one wasn't, of course). The hosts answer them (usually) politely. :-) David10244 (talk) 09:57, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Denials
@ChildrenWillListen Not sure if this brings you to MY talk page, but I didn't want to call an editor out too directly.
Do you have any idea why people deny having other accounts, or using an LLM? Repeatedly... then admit to it? It just seems weird to me, first the denials, then the admissions. I'll never understand people, I suppose... David10244 (talk) 07:14, 2 December 2025 (UTC)

Sourciness
Yes ↗, I do indeed reply by editing source. The visual editor is good for moving a column within a table; and I suppose it must be good for other purposes too, but I don't know what they are. I did once try editing with it but didn't enjoy the experience. The source editor is much improved with syntax highlighting: an option somewhere within one's "preferences", but years after setting it I'm seemingly incapable of remembering/discovering ''where'' within "preferences". -- Hoary (talk) 01:31, 30 April 2026 (UTC)
:@Hoary Well, I was contrasting "editing source" with using the Reply button. I suppose that technically, once you select "Reply", you are then editing source to make the reply The auto-signature is convenient.
:I havenever use the visual editor. As you say, I do get the impression that it is great for editing tables. And I did turn on syntax highlighting, but I also forgot where that is set! David10244 (talk) 09:55, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Welcome to Wikipedia ↗ and thank you for your contribution(s) ↗.
