25px|link= ↗ Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages ↗ and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts ↗ by typing four tilde ↗s ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button link=Wikipedia:How to sign your posts ↗ or link=Wikipedia:How to sign your posts ↗ located above the edit window. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you. <!-- Template:uw-tilde --> --SineBot (talk) 02:49, 28 November 2012 (UTC)
Conflict of interest
25px|alt=|link= ↗ Hello, Dr John Wells. We welcome ↗ your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about ↗ in the article West Lothian Archaeological Trust ↗, you may need to consider our guidance on conflicts of interest ↗.
All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view ↗ content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources ↗ and writing with as little bias as possible.
If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:
- '''Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating''' articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
- '''Be cautious about deletion discussions'''. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources ↗ in deletion discussions ↗, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
- '''Avoid linking''' to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam ↗).
- '''Exercise great caution''' so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.
Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view ↗, verifiability of information ↗, and autobiographies ↗.
For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations ↗. Please review the comments I have made on the article talk page ↗, which addresses several issues with your edits.<!-- THE FOLLOWING CATEGORY SHOULD BE REMOVED WHEN THE USER IS BLOCKED, OR IT IS DECIDED THAT THIS USER DOES NOT HAVE A COI, OR THIS TEMPLATE HAS BEEN IN PLACE FOR A WHILE WITH NO ACTION. --><!-- Template:uw-coi --> --Drm310 (talk) 20:57, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
West Lothian Archaeological Trust
Thank you for the question. I did not add most of the tags that appear on the article page, and I would ask Drm310 ↗ about the improvements done on the article (it appears this user did most of this tagging). The only tag I can recall adding to the article is the conflict of interest tag, which should stay in place until someone other then yourself makes significant contributions to the article. If you have further questions, feel free to talk to me again. Rushbugled13 (talk) 20:56, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
Re: Scottish Hill Forts
Took me a while to work it out but I think you must mean these edits: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_hill_forts_in_Scotland&diff=362782756&oldid=362535219 ↗ ? Glad it is appreciated. Not sure which are 'my' hillforts, but fun as kite aerial photography appears to be, I'm afraid I've no time at present. If you need any help with WP editing and adding pages on hillforts, I may be able to offer more useful assistance, just let me know. Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 13:29, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Tom Hanlin ↗
I noticed from your page edits that you might have an interest in the new Tom Hanlin ↗ article - I have copied some of the text you added to the Armadale, West Lothian ↗ page to the talk page there, so it can be referenced and added to the new article as appropriate. Any help that you can give on this subject is very welcome. ---- ''<span style="color: green; font-size: x-small;">nonsense</span>'' <span style="color: #BF1BE0; font-size: x-small;">ferret</span> 01:39, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

:Hi, I still find Wikipedia very confusing. In relation to our deleted entry, there has been an issue with our old domain name westlothianarchaeology.org.uk which is also linked on some of our image contributions to wiki. The domain has be acquired by an anonymous individual who launched a simple, superficial website in March 2025 which includes some of our images West Lothian Archaeology - West Lothian Archaeology explores the rich historical and cultural heritage of West Lothian, Scotland, uncovering ancient sites, artifacts, and stories that reveal the area's fascinating past from prehistoric times to the modern era. ↗. Intentionally, or otherwise, they appear to have taken our identity. We no longer have a website as such, but have a Facebook page through which our numerous old pages can be accessed on the Internet Archive Facebook ↗ eg West Lothian Archaeology Group ↗. A google search highlights the new webpage so, over the weekend, I have obtained the domains westlothianarchaeology.uk and westlothianaerialarchaeology.uk and pointed them to the Facebook page. We now operate as 'West Lothian Aerial Archaeology', a name by which we have been known since 2007, which shows up well in AI searches like Gemini. We were 'notable' in the past (endorsed by the then prime minister of Ireland, noted by one of the Scottish Government ministers, appeared on TV and in magazine articles etc) but for various reasons we now keep a relatively low profile. Our Scottish National Aerial Photography Scheme was well known The Scottish National Aerial Photography Scheme (SNAPS) ↗ John Facebook ↗ Dr John Wells (talk) 04:30, 25 June 2025 (UTC)
Early aerial photography
I noticed a recent “tombstone biography” of a a children’s illustrator and architect named Antony Maitland ↗ and was rather surprised that his father, a more “notable” person, to use the wikiblather, has no article. In addition to a substantial RAF career, Percy Eric Maitland did seminal aerial archeology in the Middle East.
I suspect you are better able than me to do something about this. Qwirkle (talk) 16:49, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
:Interesting! Very similar to Roald Dahl who also liked taking photos of archaeological sites when he was in the Middle East with the RAF. I am an anachronistic kite aerial photographer age 76. The trail blazing kite aerial archaeology in the Middle East was carried out by (the later Sir) Henry Wellcome before World War One.
:I am struggling a bit with poor eyesight in relation to screen work and have recently started uploading images from the archive of the West Lothian Archaeological Trust along with high contrast lidar images. So, I will be concentrating solely on that. However, thanks for the thought and for getting in touch. Dr John Wells (talk) 20:50, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
::The LIDAR stuff is impressive. The Helmsley Castle ↗ image shows the site far more usefully than anything available before. The same is true for Fountains, Scarborough…well, I could go through the whole list. Many thanks. Qwirkle (talk) 21:01, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
:::Thanks for the feedback. Dr John Wells (talk) 22:10, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
::PS: My wife and I were just at Fort Worden ↗ a few weeks ago, which is, this side of the Atlantic, sacred ground to kite photographers. Small sort of world in some ways. Qwirkle (talk) 21:22, 27 September 2025 (UTC)
:::Sure is! I assume from your comments you have a strong interest in aerial archaeology. Dr John Wells (talk) 21:37, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
::Hope you do not mind me hopping in here. I was wondering if you could add a wikilink to lidar ↗, as it is not a well known word, in the image captions. Thanks for the additions. Keith D (talk) 20:46, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
:::Thanks for the suggestion. Will do. Dr John Wells (talk) 21:26, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
:::Hi again, How do I do that? The double brackets just appear as double brackets. As you may gather, I am Wiki illiterate. Dr John Wells (talk) 21:36, 28 September 2025 (UTC)
:::A link appears to work in the image summary rather than in the caption. So, I will add the link there. Dr John Wells (talk) 08:23, 29 September 2025 (UTC)
:::Done! Dr John Wells (talk) 09:06, 29 September 2025 (UTC)
::::It should work, I did it on the Bridlington ↗ article, see this diff ↗ for how to do it. Keith D (talk) 20:18, 1 October 2025 (UTC)

Lidar images
I am working on a List of scheduled monuments in the city of Milton Keynes ↗ (being developed in User:JMF/sandbox3. Very few have images. But I see from https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1006918?section=comments-and-photos that Lidar imagery exists in at least one case. I noticed that you added a lidar image to Old Wolverton ↗, so I wondered if perhaps you might be able to do some more? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 13:02, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
:I have quite a backlog to catch up on but will have a look at your list. I am trying to cover most types of site across England and Wales. Not much in Scotland so far. I might try improving on Old Wolverton. Dr John Wells (talk) 22:55, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
::Alternatively, could I do it myself? What is the copyright status of the images (such as the one for Olney, as in the link above) - is it public domain? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 23:19, 20 November 2025 (UTC)
:::I would check with Historic England.
:::I have update the Old Wolverton Image: thumb|A lidar ↗view of the site of a motte and bailey castle, deserted village and monastic grange at Old Wolverton ↗ Dr John Wells (talk) 01:54, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
:::thumb|A lidar view ↗ of Ravenstone with the site of a manor and priory with moats and fishponds ↗ Dr John Wells (talk) 02:40, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
::There is a lot going on in that area north of Tyringham. On record there is Broadmore Covert Roman building, Tyringham DMV, Ravestone ring ditch, Chilmore Iron Age enclosure and Tyringham Old Hall. At first glance, I cannot say what the faint features are in the lidar image. thumb ↗ Dr John Wells (talk) 03:10, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
:Milton Keynes village area looks interesting. Have a look around LIDAR Map of England and Wales, built with UK open data ↗ Dr John Wells (talk) 03:22, 21 November 2025 (UTC)

::The images on the NHLE site have been contributed by a reader without any rights info. I'll have a look at the LIDAR map of England and Wales shortly. Meanwhike, some great images here already that I can use, thank you! --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 11:02, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
:::Are the Olney lidar images from Clifton Reynes '12 Roman ENCLOSURE features; 1 20th Century QUARRY feature; 2 Roman QUARRY features'? Dr John Wells (talk) 15:59, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
::::Unlikely. The only NHLE SM record I have for Clifton Reynes is List Entry 1006919 ↗ and the detailed description is
::::{{blockquote|A probable medieval and/or post-medieval subrectangular moated site is visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data. Located in a field about 127 metres NNE of Wood Farm, the earthwork ditch encloses an internal area about 50.7 x 36.7 metres. The ditch varies between 6.6 and 11.5 metres wide. The west side is about 54.5 metres N-S: the south side is about 49.5 metres WNW-ESE: the east side about 54 metres SSW-NNE and the north side about 70 metres ESE-WNW. Ditches extend about 16 metres N to meet the lane from the NW corner and NNE from the NE corner. Within the enclosure, the platform area is covered by a small block of medieval and/or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks which remains extant. The features are visible on aerial photographs taken in 2012.|source=Heritage Gateway {{!}} Historic England Research Records {{!}} Monument Number 346710 ↗}}
::::It was NHLE 1006918 Roman site at Olney ↗ that led me to those lidar images on the Comments tab. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 17:10, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
:::::The extract I gave was from: Heritage Gateway - Results ↗ Dr John Wells (talk) 19:57, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
::::::Interesting indeed. It doesn't appear to be a Scheduled Monument, though. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 21:01, 21 November 2025 (UTC)
