WikiCup 2019 July newsletter

The third round of the 2019 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round needed to score at least 68 points, which is substantially lower than last year's 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Contestants managed 4 (5) featured articles, 4 featured lists, 18 featured pictures, 29 good articles, 50 DYK entries, 9 ITN entries, and 39 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and it is imperative to claim them in the correct round; one FA claim had to be rejected because it was incorrectly submitted (claimed in Round 3 when it qualified for Round 2), so be warned! When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗ (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. WikiCup 2019 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.

As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗ (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Awards will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved much this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

Welcome to the 2020 WikiCup!

Happy New Year, Happy New Decade and Happy New WikiCup! The competition begins today and all article creators, expanders and improvers are welcome to take part. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found '''here ↗'''. If you have not yet signed up, you can '''add your name here ↗''' and the judges will set up your submissions page. WikiCup 2020 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.

Our top scorers in Round 1 were:

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews ↗.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; {{flagicon|United States}} L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, {{flagicon|United States}} Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, {{flagicon|Denmark}} MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. WikiCup 2020 November newsletter

The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new '''Champion''' is {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|Lee Vilenski}}, the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|Gog the Mild}}. In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|The Rambling Man}} was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|Epicgenius}} close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.

The other finalists were {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|Hog Farm}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|HaEr48}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|Harrias}} and {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant11|Bloom6132}}. The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. WikiCup 2021 May newsletter

The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in Round 2 were:

Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time).

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. WikiCup 2021 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, {{flagicon|BWA}} The Rambling Man and {{flagicon|New York (state)}} Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being {{flagicon|Republic of Venice|wartime}} Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are 22px ↗ Gog the Mild, {{flagicon|ENG}} Lee Vilenski, 20px|Zulu (International Code of Signals) ↗ BennyOnTheLoose, {{flagicon|Rwanda}} Amakuru and 22px ↗ Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.

Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. 22px|George Floyd mural ↗ Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror ↗ but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For other contestants, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

Katharine Kniskern Mather link

Hello,
I'm Beardbrarian. I'm part of a small team of Iowa State University library staff, along with HematISU, that are working on Wikipedia, following the guidelines laid out in Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Library/Cultural_Professionals ↗. The edit HematISU made yesterday, was to future-proof an existing citation to one of our finding aids by changing it from a direct link to an Archival Resource Key ↗ or ARK. Over the years, our library has hosted finding aids at various URLs, some older links from Wikipedia point to www.add.lib.iastate.edu and are now broken because that URL has changed. The prior Kniskern Mather link pointed to findingaids.lib.iastate.edu, which is no longer the current home of our finding aids. While the link currently works, the platform it links to will be retired eventually. The link HematISU added points to the current platform for finding aids, cardinal.lib.iastate.edu, which will almost certainly be replaced by something else in the future, if past practices hold. When that happens we will update the ARK to point to the new location and the ARK, but the link in Wikipedia will not need to be changed.

The purpose of updating Wikipedia links to ISU library resources to ARKs is to reduce dead links in Wikipedia and to reduce the burden on Wikipedia editors to update external links as URLs change. We are only making such changes for links to resources managed by the ISU library. This is very similar to the use of DOIs ↗ throughout Wikipedia to link to resources.

May we restore HematISU's edit?

Beardbrarian (talk) 14:53, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
:{{replyto|Beardbrarian}} Absolutely — you didn't need to ask my permission at all. Please accept my apologies for the error. --Dylan620 (talk) 18:55, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
:{{replyto|Beardbrarian}} As a matter of fact, I have just restored the edit myself ↗. In the time since I was last an active user on Wikipedia, I clearly have become a little ''too'' wary of URLs with formats I didn't recognize, and I am not familiar with ARKs. Thank you and Hemat for your work, and again I am sorry for the inconvenience. --Dylan620 (talk) 19:08, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
:{{replyto|Dylan620}} No worries! They are funky looking URLs, so it's understandable they could raise suspicion. I don't think ARKs are nearly as widely used as DOIs, which doesn't help make them more recognizable. Thanks! Beardbrarian (talk) 22:27, 27 October 2021 (UTC)

WikiCup 2021 November newsletter

The WikiCup is over for another year and the finalists can relax! Our '''Champion''' this year is {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|The Rambling Man}}, who amassed over 5000 points in the final round, achieving 8 featured articles and almost 500 reviews. It was a very competitive round; seven of the finalists achieved over 1000 points in the round (enough to win the 2019 contest), and three scored over 3000 (enough to win the 2020 event). Our 2021 finalists and their scores were:

#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|The Rambling Man}} with 5072 points
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|Lee Vilenski}} with 3276 points
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|Amakuru}} with 3197 points
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|Epicgenius}} with 1611 points
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|Gog the Mild}} with 1571 points
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|BennyOnTheLoose}} with 1420 points
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|Hog Farm}} with 1043 points
#{{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant12|Bloom6132}} with 528 points

All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition, not forgetting User:Jarry1250, who runs the scoring bot.

If you have views on whether the rules or scoring need adjustment for next year's contest, please comment on the WikiCup talk page ↗. Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to '''sign up to participate ↗'''; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2022 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! <small>If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send ↗.</small> Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. :{{ping|SuperSonicGamingYT18}} I appreciate your apology — is there anything I can do to help you get started with editing? This page ↗ also contains useful information for new editors. Cheers, Dylan620 (talk) 04:02, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, it is pretty hard to visually edit. How do I do it? SuperSonicGamingYT18 (talk) 04:54, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
:{{ping|SuperSonicGamingYT18}} Apologies for the late response. I will be very honest — I'm not terribly familiar with visual editing myself. I've been using the source editor ↗ ever since I joined, and I still find its interface easier to navigate than the visual editor. If you want to use the visual editor, then Help:VisualEditor ↗ provides information that I find useful.
:I can give you a quick rundown of some of the most basic yet vital functions of wiki markup:
:*To link to a page on Wikipedia, use two brackets on each side of the title of the page you want to link. For instance, if you want to link to Sonic the Hedgehog ↗, type <nowiki>Sonic the Hedgehog ↗</nowiki>
:*To link to an external website ↗, you can just paste the URL into the edit box like so: http://nhc.noaa.gov. If you want to shorten the visual appearance of the link so it takes up less space on the screen, then add one bracket to each end; applying this to the previous link yields http://nhc.noaa.gov ↗. You can label a link by first adding a space in between the URL and the closing bracket, and then adding text before the closing bracket, like this ↗
:*To cite sources (see also: Wikipedia:Citing sources ↗, Wikipedia:Reliable sources ↗), use <nowiki><ref></ref></nowiki> and include the material you're using for the citation in between the two tags; some helpful templates and their input fields are listed and described at Wikipedia:Citing sources#What information to include ↗
:*''Italic'' and '''bold''' text are achieved by using two or three (respectively) apostrophes at each end of a word or phrase. Example: ''fish'' is rendered in wikitext as <nowiki>''fish''</nowiki>, and '''chips''' is rendered in wikitext as <nowiki>'''chips'''</nowiki>
:*To insert an image or other form of media ↗ into an article, type <nowiki>thumb|<caption text goes here> ↗</nowiki>
:Additional valuable information can be found at Help:Editing ↗. Also, in your personal preferences ↗, you can check off an option to add an edit toolbar to the top of the edit box; this toolbar includes a drop-down "Help" menu as well as quick and easy access to various editing functions. I hope this helps, and I'll be glad to lend further assistance. --Dylan620 (talk) 04:42, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

:{{ping|SuperSonicGamingYT18}} Hi there, apologies for the late response (again), I've been busy with off-wiki obligations. Wikipedia has historically drawn some skepticism about its accuracy, due to its "anyone can edit" philosophy. However, policies and guidelines are in place (including but not limited to verifiability ↗, no original research ↗, reliable sources ↗, neutral point of view ↗, and biographies of living persons ↗) to ensure the quality of the information which is present in or added to articles. You would be right; I thought I was reverting the vandalism. Admin help requested

{{adminhelp|answered=yes}}
Hi there,

I just uploaded the album cover for ''This Wild Willing ↗'' by Glen Hansard ↗ (incredible album, strongly recommended listening, but I digress). I couldn't figure out how to reduce the file size before I initially uploaded, so I did so with a resolution of 700px2; I managed to reduce the resolution to 300px2 after uploading, but I would like for an administrator to please delete the previous version because it is now orphaned NFC. (If anyone has any suggestions of how I could reduce the resolution of a file before uploading it, I would welcome that, too.) Thank you, Dylan620 (he/him) (talk) 17:48, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
:I have deleted the earlier version of the file from the history. As for reducing the resolution of a file before uploading it, there are many pieces of image editing software which can do that. GIMP ↗ is a free one, but I find it sometimes difficult to figure out how to do what I want with it. You could try asking for suggestions at the help desk or the reference desk, as there must be many editors who frequently do that kind of thing. JBW (talk) 20:12, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup ↗. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

#{{flagicon|New York (state)}} Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
#{{flagicon|Christmas Island}} AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
#{{flagicon|Kingdom of Scotland|old}} Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
#23px ↗ Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
#20px|link=SPQR ↗ Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
#{{flagicon|United States of America}} Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
#{{flagicon|ENG}} Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points.

Good luck! WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

Hello sir I removed that section because of that section Sidhu was getting unnecessary hate. Everyone has different opinion about Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale for Punjab people he is matry and strong leader who stood against Indian government dominance according to many sources he never demanded khalistan his main motive is anandapur resolution many big politicians like Subramanian Swamy ↗ also said that bhindranwale was Sant Daredevils56 (talk) 12:05, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
:Hi {{u|Daredevils56}}, and apologies for the late response; I had a busy couple of days off-wiki. I find myself in agreement with what {{u|Fylindfotberserk}} (courtesy ping) told you on their talk page — such a significant removal of sourced content should be discussed on the article's talk page ↗. Furthermore, I strongly recommend reading Wikipedia's policy on editing neutrally ↗. In any given article, we should strive to proportionately and fairly describe all significant viewpoints which are held regarding that article's subject(s), as long as those views are covered in reliable sources ↗; as far as I can tell from the sources provided for that section (although due to my language barrier I am unfortunately unable to understand the YouTube video cited), Moose Wala did indeed generate controversy with the Khalisan references in "Panjab," and I would caution against removing sourced material solely because it appears to paint (a) subject(s) in a negative light. --<span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> in public/on mobile (he/him · talk) 19:39, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

WikiProject Weather: Map Dot & Template/Infobox Colors

Dear project member,
This message is being sent out to encourage new ideas and feedback on those proposed in regard to the colors debate for WikiProject Weather. For those who are unaware of what's been happening over the last year, I will give a brief summary. We have been discussing proposed changes to the colors of the dots on tropical cyclone maps and templates and infoboxes across the entire weather project in order to solve issues related to the limited contrast between colors for both normal vision as well as the various types of color blindness (MOS:ACCESS ↗). We had partially implemented a proposal earlier this year, however, it was objected to by a number of people and additional issues were presented that made it evident this wasn't the optimal solution. We tried to come up with other solutions to address the issues related to color contrast, however, none of them gained traction and no consensus was generated.

We need your help and I encourage you to propose your own scale and give feedback on those already listed. Keep in mind that we are '''NOT''' making a decision on any individual proposal at this time. We are simply allowing people to make proposals and cultivate them given feedback from other project members. Please visit our project page ↗ for additional details. The proposal phase will close no later than December 31st at 23:59 UTC. <span style="white-space:nowrap;text-shadow:#009200 0.3em 0.4em 1.0em,#009200 -0.2em -0.2em 1.0em;color:#009200"><b>Noah</b></span><span style="color:#ff0000"><b>Talk</b></span> 03:57, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Other notable performances were put in by {{flagicon image|Transgender Pride flag.svg|link=Transgender}} Sammi Brie, {{flagicon image|Flag of Mars.svg|link=Mars}} Thebiguglyalien, {{flagicon image|Cat in console.png}} MyCatIsAChonk, {{flagicon|Chicago}} PCN02WPS, and {{flagicon|London}} AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗ (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews ↗. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Non-static charts

Hi Dylan620. Please note that according to WP:CHARTS ↗, a chart needs to be {{tq|... static, that is, the data in the chart cannot change. This excludes dynamic "all-time" charts ...|q=y}} You are adding the "Greatest of All Time Adult Alternative Songs" which is, by nature, not static. I removed the chart up to #20, please remove the rest yourself. --Muhandes (talk) 09:02, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
:{{re|Muhandes}} Thank you for pointing this out to me, though I am quite disappointed to see. My understanding has been that placing in an all-time chart was a notable quality that merited inclusion in an article. However, I respect that this could be an issue, since ''Billboard'' does not readily produce archives of all-time charts like they do with weekly or year-end charts. I am willing to revert my additions as you have requested, but would greatly prefer to discuss first. I have a couple suggestions for workarounds:
:*'''Wayback Machine''': The most recent updates of the all-time Alternative Songs (35th anniversary, 2023) and Adult Alternative Songs (25th anniversary, 2021), are archived on the Wayback Machine; alt ↗, AAA ↗. Unlike the all-time charts themselves, these archives are static.
:*'''Artist chart histories''': If an artist has a page on ''Billboard'' and has a song that appeared on either of these all-time charts, then one can look up the placements on the artist's chart history. The alternative and AAA all-time chart positions can be directly accessed under the three-letter codes ''GMT'' and ''GAD'', respectively. Using Imagine Dragons as an example: GMT ↗, GAD ↗.
:Additionally, while this <s>could only be used as a source for a select number of articles</s> <u>only mentions a select few songs directly</u>, ''Billboard'' ran an article ↗ last month on the updated all-time artist and song rankings for the Alternative Airplay chart. --<span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him · talk · edits ↗) 17:34, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
::{{u|ResolutionsPerMinute}}, I see you have also been reverting, and I hope it is okay for me to draw your attention to this discussion because I would like your feedback on these suggestions as well. --<span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him · talk · edits ↗) 20:58, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
:::Anniversary charts are fine since they only get published once, but don't use the ones that get constantly updated. <span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS;color:royalblue">'''ResPM'''</span> (T&#x1F508;&#x1F3B5;C ↗) 21:07, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
::::{{re|ResolutionsPerMinute}} Hmmmm... do you think attaching the ''Billboard'' article as a source would be sufficient to establish that the all-time chart position is from an anniversary chart, along with using an archived Wayback Machine URL as a source for the position itself? --<span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him · talk · edits ↗) 02:35, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
:::::I don't see the harm in citing the article, but using archives of a dynamic chart? That's no different than citing a live source. It needs to specifically be an anniversary chart. <span style="font-family:Comic Sans MS;color:royalblue">'''ResPM'''</span> (T&#x1F508;&#x1F3B5;C ↗) 10:40, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
::::::{{re|ResolutionsPerMinute}} Okay. I am still not convinced that a five-year interval (as has been the case with Alternative Airplay's all-time ranking updates) is sufficiently dynamic to be problematic, but that is a topic for WT:CHARTS ↗ instead of here (I may start a RfC in the coming days; still mulling it over). I'm about to leave for work for the afternoon/evening, and will be busy tomorrow as well, but if time permits then I will try to remove the positions which have not yet been reverted. I do intend to restore all-time chart positions that have been explicitly mentioned by the ''Billboard'' article — if acceptable, with the help of artist ↗ chart ↗ histories ↗ to fill in the rest of the top 10. --<span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him · talk · edits ↗) 15:32, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
::I believe the issue with dynamic tables has never been the sourcing, as one could use archived sourced and also, the "all time" positions are often mentioned by secondary sources. I believe the issue was that chart positions should be factual, and with dynamic charts there is no way to state the fact {{em|within the chart positions table}}. I don't see a problem with adding the fact to the text itself, with as qualifier, such as "it charted at #X on the all time chart, as of 2023". Muhandes (talk) 16:51, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
:::{{re|Muhandes}} That all makes sense, and mentioning the all-time chart positions in the text is a good idea. I'll start going through articles after dinner, removing tables in the process. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him · talk · edits ↗) 20:26, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

The '''WikiCup''' is a marathon rather than a sprint and all those reaching the final round have been involved in the competition for the last ten months, improving Wikipedia vastly during the process. After all this hard work, {{flagicon|Delaware}} BeanieFan11 has emerged as the 2023 winner and the '''WikiCup Champion'''. The finalists this year were:-

Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether they made it to the final round or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the competition, some of whom did very well. Wikipedia has benefitted greatly from the quality creations, expansions and improvements made, and the numerous reviews performed. All those who reached the final round will win awards. The following special awards will be made based on high performance in particular areas of content creation and review. Awards will be handed out in the next few days.

The WikiCup has run every year since 2007. With the 2023 contest now concluded, I will be standing down as a judge due to real life commitments, so I hope that another editor will take over running the competition. Please get in touch if you are interested. Next year's competition will hopefully begin on 1 January 2024. You are invited to '''sign up to participate ↗''' in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors. It only remains to congratulate our worthy winners once again and thank all participants for their involvement! <small>(If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send ↗.)</small> Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Generalissima}}, who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) ↗ and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Vami IV}}, who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class ↗ articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Award ↗s. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗. List of F5 and EF5 tornadoes ↗ Improvement Time!

Hello there! I am sending this alert to all members of the WikiProject Weather ↗ and editors who have recently edited in the realm of tornadoes.

There is a ''large'' and '''important''' discussion ongoing, with the goal to completely overhaul and improve the List of F5 and EF5 tornadoes ↗. The previous improvement attempt back in 2022/2023 gained almost no participation. This alert is being sent out so these discussions hopefully gain a reasonably-sized participation, so the F5/EF5 tornado article, one of the most viewed weather-related articles on Wikipedia, can be improved for all readers!

Help with timeline draft

Hello. I have been looking at the Pacific hurricane season timelines that you've been making and promoting to FL. It had inspired me to start a draft on the timeline of the 2019 Pacific typhoon season ↗ in an attempt to make my first FL. The problem is that there has never been a Pacific typhoon season timeline that has been promoted to FL, so I had to base the timeline off other timelines of different basins. I have finished the timeline of events (besides a few missing landfalls) and just need to add images to it.

I was wondering if you have any suggestions on what the draft should be like, while also considering the amount of systems and events during the season. I would also greatly appreciate you editing the draft, but I'll leave that up to you. —'''<span style="background:linear-gradient(90deg,#178f5a,#22d486);-webkit-background-clip:text;-webkit-text-fill-color:transparent;"><span style="font-size:75%;">JCM</span>Luis</span>''' 💬 ↗ 17:57, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
:{{re|JCMLuis}} It is heartwarming that my work has inspired you :,) I'd love to lend a hand with the draft! I should have some time to look at it over the weekend or on Monday. It's great that you've chosen to do this with a WPAC season, precisely because there hasn't been a WPAC timeline FL yet; I think it's exciting to establish a first of its kind, plus the WPAC regularly sees high amounts of activity and impact. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 01:46, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
::{{re|JCMLuis}} So I've been reading over the timeline (and making a few minor tweaks to the lede) and I have a few comments. There are some words and other details that I think should be added, but the overall format is very good and in line with what I would expect from a timeline FL. I do question whether the ACE should be mentioned. 276.8 units is a high number on the face of it, but the climatological average is 299.6 units according to this ↗, so the 2019 seasonal total is actually near par for the basin. I mentioned the ACE in the ledes of the 1993, 1994, and 2014 EPAC timelines because those three seasons were particularly active in terms of ACE, all placing in the top 11 for the basin; the 2002 EPAC season was fair-to-middling in terms of ACE, so I chose not to mention it in that season's timeline. I also think that the JMA's "very strong" and "violent" categories should be integrated into the timeline itself, since they are included in the colorization scheme for the timeline graph. I'll try to help out with these (and adding more images) in the coming days. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 21:04, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
:::Alright (sorry for the very late response after almost a month), so I have included the other JMA categories in the timeline and removed the sentence about the ACE. I have also added the missing landfalls, so the timeline of events should be truly finished. I was wondering, has the JMA ever added the "Very Strong" or "Violent" label onto the typhoons' names? (Like Very Strong Typhoon Bualoi) I don't recall seeing the JMA ever do that, so I left the categories unchanged in the timeline of events. But I feel it could confuse the reader by saying that a typhoon had weakened into a typhoon. Like for example:
:::*18:00&nbsp;UTC at {{coord|15.7|140.1|name=Wutip weakens into a typhoon.}} – the JMA reports that Typhoon Wutip (02W) has weakened into a typhoon.
:::Wutip was a very strong typhoon before weakening into just a typhoon, so would I reword the events to say something like "Typhoon Wutip (02W) has weakened from a very strong typhoon into a typhoon," or would I add the "Very Strong" or "Violent" label onto the storm's name? —'''<span style="background:linear-gradient(90deg,#178f5a,#22d486);-webkit-background-clip:text;-webkit-text-fill-color:transparent;"><span style="font-size:75%;">JCM</span>Luis</span>''' 💬 ↗ 17:25, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
::::{{re|JCMLuis}} Hmmmm, that's an interesting issue. I know that when the JMA issues advisories on "regular" typhoons, or if a system is forecast to be one, they put the "Strong" qualifier for the system's intensity. It is also listed here ↗ under the "Categorization in Japan" column, though it is omitted from the "International Categorization" column and from this page ↗. I agree that <span style="color:green">Typhoon Wutip (02W) has weakened into a typhoon</span> could be confusing. I think your <span style="color:green">weakened from a very strong typhoon into a typhoon</span> wording could work, though I might want to raise the issue with the "strong typhoon vs. plain ol' typhoon" discrepancy on the WPTC talk page. I would avoid adding the "very strong" or "violent" labels to the storms' names, as I have never seen them do that like they do with severe tropical storms; to use examples from the current season, Severe Tropical Storm Prapiroon would be accurate, but Violent Typhoon Yagi wouldn't work even though it is technically correct. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 00:44, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
:::::What I have done is changed the wording and wikilinked the categories to the list of storms of that category, so I don't think there should be much confusion anymore. Now I need help with the images. I'm not sure what satellite images or tracks to include or exclude, since the Western Pacific basin is more active than the others. Isn't there a policy about too many images, even if all of them are located to the right? I'll also need help with the alternative text since I can't describe the images really well. (I don't want to go the basic route of "A satellite image of a tropical storm over the Pacific Ocean" or "A track of a Pacific typhoon" or something like that) —'''<span style="background:linear-gradient(90deg,#178f5a,#22d486);-webkit-background-clip:text;-webkit-text-fill-color:transparent;"><span style="font-size:75%;">JCM</span>Luis</span>''' 💬 ↗ 16:35, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
::::::{{re|JCMLuis}} Those changes look good to me! As for the images, I don't think there's a concrete ''policy'' about having too many images in an article, but there does come a point where an excessive number of images can hinder an article's readability and lessen its overall quality. Generally, I think tropical cyclone season timelines should represent as many systems as possible – ideally, all of them – with either a track map, a satellite image, or both, as long as the images aren't packed too closely together. This is something I've tried to do with the timelines I've pushed through FLC this year (2011 EPAC ↗ being the most recent). That being said, some of the images in the draft do seem to be a bit close together, which appears to be the result of a few short-lived and/or weak systems – such as Sepat, Danas, and Mun – being represented by both satellite images and track maps. I would recommend choosing to keep either the track maps or the satellite images for such systems, perhaps leaning toward keeping the satellite images if you can find any breakpoints that could be used as location references in the text. For instance, the JTWC's report on the 2019 season ↗ mentions Palau and Osaka in the context of Sepat (94W). Another thing I noticed is that Sepat continues to be referred to as "Sepat (Dodong)" long after it has exited the PAR; I would recommend mentioning when Dodong left the PAR (this information can be found in PAGASA's report on the 2019 season ↗) and referring to it as just Sepat and/or 94W outside the PAR. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 21:20, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
::::::Forgot to say this when I initially replied, but I'll try to help out with alt texts this week. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 21:59, 2 October 2024 (UTC)
:::::::Seems that you have done the alt texts. (along with some formatting and adding JTWC pressure estimates) Yeah I would have never come up with any of them. Thank you so much! One issue I'd like to address before nominating for FL is Matmo's landfall. I could not find any source saying when the storm made landfall, so I used IBTrACS for that, but I don't think that it is the exact time. There is a source ↗ that says that it is ''forecasted'' to make landfall at 16:00 local time, but I don't think that counts. —'''<span style="background:linear-gradient(90deg,#178f5a,#22d486);-webkit-background-clip:text;-webkit-text-fill-color:transparent;"><span style="font-size:75%;">JCM</span>Luis</span>''' 💬 ↗ 17:52, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
::::::::{{re|JCMLuis}} No problem! I'm glad I could help. Yeah, I would recommend against using a forecast source for this information, given that tropical cyclones can move a little slower or faster than predicted and that operational landfall times can be tweaked in reanalysis after the season is over. I think it's reasonable under the circumstances to use IBTrACS as the source for the timing of Matmo's landfall. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 22:37, 21 October 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|AirshipJungleman29}}, who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|BeanieFan11}}, who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Generalissima}} scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Sammi Brie}} with 879 points, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Hey man im josh}} with 533 points, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|BennyOnTheLoose}} with 432 points, {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Arconning}} with 244 points, and {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|AryKun}} with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to '''sign up to participate ↗'''; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

Peer review ↗ for Snooze (song) ↗

It's been a while, dylan! I asked you a while back offwiki if you can have a good look at Snooze (song) ↗, but someone else beat you to it :P the offer is still up! I have opened a peer review ↗ here where you can leave more in-depth comments about the article. 2002 Pacific hurricane season ↗

Hey Dylan620, seeing as you created the timeline for the season, I wondered if you wanted to nominate the season for good topic status? There are only four articles - the main article, timeline, Hernan, and Kenna - but all are still good enough. ♫ Hurricanehink (<small>talk ↗</small>) 20:55, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
:Hi there HH – yes, that sounds great to me! <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 21:49, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
::Cool! So first off, how do you think the articles are? Kenna is featured still, and at quick glance I think it might be OK. I'm not sure about Hernan. Do you think it should stay as an article? The season article is still very much on the short side. Or is it perhaps too short, and the season article is the problem article? Just spitballing. ♫ Hurricanehink (<small>talk ↗</small>) 21:54, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
:::{{re|Hurricanehink}} Apologies for the late reply – it's been a busy, sleep-deprived past couple days in meatspace. I alluded to this in the merge discussion for Hernan, but yeah, there's definitely quite a bit of room to expand the season article. I don't see any information about pre-season forecasts – how did reality match up with expectations? Some storm sections could also be beefed up; Alma's in particular sticks out as quite short for a major hurricane, especially one that occurred in May, which isn't exactly common. By contrast, Elida's section might be too long, though I suspect that this is due to some information being sourced to operational advisories. Even so, it's currently 393 words longer than the section for Kenna, which to me seems to lend undue weight to Elida. I also think the lede could probably do with some expansion and/or slight restructuring, as it reads... not badly by any means, but just a little haphazardly. As for Kenna's article, I'll need to read it more thoroughly in the coming days, but I agree with you that there are no red flags at first glance. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 23:03, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
::::Yea the season does seem to be lacking a little bit. I agree that Elida focused too much on operational advisories, so that'll be an easy fix. No worries about the late reply, just glad to hear back. I guess we'll reconvene once/if Hernan is merged to reassess? ♫ Hurricanehink (<small>talk ↗</small>) 03:21, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
:::::{{re|Hurricanehink}} That works for me. In the meantime I might try to start expanding some of the other storm sections. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 13:36, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
::::::Good idea, like Alma should definitely be longer as you mentioned. ♫ Hurricanehink (<small>talk ↗</small>) 19:47, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

At quick glance the list looks pretty good. I'm in the middle of a bunch of real world projects, so I can't do much on Wikipedia these days. I'm not a fan of timeline articles in general, as I feel they're pretty redundant with the main season article, so I hope you don't mind if I miss out on this FLC, as there are more important fish storms to fry, so to speak :P ♫ Hurricanehink (<small>talk ↗</small>) 18:41, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found '''here ↗'''. If you have not yet signed up, you can '''add your name here ↗''' and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page ↗.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes ↗ to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: {{User4|Cwmhiraeth}}, {{User4|Epicgenius}}, {{User4|Frostly}}, {{User4|Guerillero}} and {{User4|Lee Vilenski}}. Landmines (song) ↗

Hey there, thanks for going through my edits and removing the duplicate charts! I didn't think that WP:USCHARTS ↗ applied to year-end charts, but I do see the argument for keeping it that way. However, I believe that it's worth leaving up the chart for "Landmines ↗" specifically for the reason you mentioned: it was the group's first #1 on the chart in two decades, a fact mentioned by Billboard itself ↗ as being record-breaking. This leads me to believe that it could qualify under the "Unusual cases" stipulation in the dependent charts ↗ section of the criteria, which allow for the inclusion of subordinate charts in these sorts of odd situations — if not the year-end one, at least the weekly one. What do you think? Leafy46 (talk) 22:43, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
:Hi {{u|Leafy46}}, no problem! Honestly, I wasn't even going through your edits at all – I'm combing through ''Billboard''{{'s}} year-end Rock Airplay listing for any entries that haven't yet been added to their respective articles, and happened to notice the Alternative Airplay year-end listing on the article for "Landmines". Thinking it over, your reasoning does make sense, especially in light of the ''Billboard'' news piece. Another possible solution could be to mention the song's Alternative Airplay year-end chart performance in the article's prose. I did something like this on the article for "Not Strong Enough ↗", which was the 2023 year-end #1 on Adult Alternative Airplay; I wrote about this in the commercial performance section while omitting it from the table. <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 23:52, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
::No worries, I just noticed that you did the same thing over at "Dilemma ↗" and "The American Dream Is Killing Me ↗"; good timing, I suppose, given that I'd placed in those year-end charts just the other day. Thanks for the suggestion, I think that I'll incorporate that in for "Landmines"! Leafy46 (talk) 04:20, 18 January 2025 (UTC)

:O frik, thank you for reminding me, {{u|Skyshifter}}! I actually started re-reading the article the other day intending to chip in a review, but got sidetracked. I should have something written down by day's end. I should note, though, that it generally isn't appropriate to explicitly ask someone to support (or oppose, for that matter) a consensus-building discussion, as this could be viewed as canvassing ↗; writing a neutrally-worded message is a better way to go about attracting input. Cheers, <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 13:14, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
::Thank you! I only worded it that way because you have previously supported the FAC for the article. :::{{re|Skyshifter}} I would say so, just to be safe. The act, ''in and of itself'', of messaging someone who supported a previous FAC for the article in question isn't a problematic thing to do, but I'd suggest maybe wording that message along the lines of, "hi there, since you chipped in at a previous FAC for this article, I was wondering if you had any feedback this time around?" so as to avoid any misreading of intentions. I know you're acting in good faith; just wanted to provide some advice for the future :) <span style="color:blue">Dylan</span><span style="color:purple">620</span> (he/him • talkedits ↗) 14:02, 8 February 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 March newsletter

The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table ↗, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table ↗ shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.

Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:

The full scores for round 1 can be seen here ↗. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. WikiCup 2025 May newsletter

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table ↗ shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

In addition, we would like to recognize {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Generalissima}} for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here ↗. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.

Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found '''here ↗'''. If you have not yet signed up, you can '''add your name here ↗''', and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page ↗.

For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: {{User4|Cwmhiraeth}}, {{User4|Epicgenius}}, {{User4|Frostly}}, {{User4|Guerillero}} and {{User4|Lee Vilenski}}. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! <small>If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send ↗.</small> MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:49, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
