Help request

I can't get the redirect on Electromagnetic hypersensitivity ↗ to work. If I edit it is comes up OK, but when I exit and try checking it, the auto redirect fails.

How to I correct wrong capitalisation on a new page title - I can't find a way to edit it. It is Books on british railway accidents ↗, should be British of course. Why use email? Also on user_talk pages, always create a wikilink to the article you are talking about.

I was not objecting to the format it was the lack of '''context''' - your version ↗ gave only the vaguest indication of where the crash happened. There were four vital wikilinks missing: Hastings, London, Hither Green and Grove Park . These have now all been provided for you but it would have been better if you had created them yourself.

I don't like to rub this in but I note with horror that you removed my {{tl|wikify}} tag (I should have given it a {{tl|context}} tag as well) from Castlecary (East Dunbartonshire) rail accident ↗ even though none of the vital location information had been added.

OK, others will come along and add the links eventually, but think wiki, get your fingers trained to fly to the [[]] keys as you write the article - like I am doing here. I also like to see a link to a map sources page, eg. as at the end of Ais Gill rail crash ↗ but I won't moan if you leave that out.

James Callaghan

It was always to the best of my recollection that he went to what is now City Boys. Im quite sure theres a wooden plaque in the hall dedicated to his attendance. However its been a decade since I went to City Boys so I could be mistaken and that he probably opened the hall or something similar! If you ring the City Records office (near the city museum) they will be able to put a local historian on the line to answer any questions etc (or ring CPBS as you mentioned). Anyway sorry if I made an error, I was mistaken and made the change in good faith. I moved Connington South rail crash ↗ to Conington South rail crash ↗ but now realise that there is some uncertainty about the name and want to revert the move, not sure how to do this safely though. Can an experienced editor do it for me? A redirect page "Conington South rail crash" would be useful, I have seen this spelling used in at least one publication and also have a link to it. Railway Series Citation

Hello.

I don't have the books, and the most I've learned about the books is from YouTube channels The Unlucky Tug and Explosive Cookie, but neither talk about the inspiration behind the Thin Controller. :::Well, the books themselves are closely based on the Talyllyn Railway which was the first railway to be saved and entirely operated by preservationists and volunteers. Most of the incidents are taken from LTC Rolt's book "Railway Adventure" recounting his experiences over the first 2 years when he was managing the railway and acting as guard and travelling ticket seller. Edward Thomas performed a similar role in the last years before the volunteers took over. So the Thin Controller could be based on either or both, but since the incidents all related to the preservation period I have always assumed it was Rolt rather than Thomas. Maybe W and C Awdry's book on the technical background to the Isle of Sodor Railways would clarify this, but I don't have that. Hyperman 42 (talk) 13:29, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

:::::Yes, I don't think you'd find the answer in the average web article, it would need to go back to earlier sources with a better understanding of what Rev Awdry intended at the time. There's general agreement that the Thin Controller is based on one or both of Rolt and Thomas, as the parallel is clear and intentional for those who know the books and the railway especially round the time of writing in the 1950s/60s - the question is which one. The statement about the train remaining upright and in-line is clear from the photo (compare Colwich 1986) but not sure of the best way to reference this. The comment about people being hurt by tables and luggage I remember seeing in BBC reporting so I will have a look for it. But I also had a look at the extensive and interesting discussion on the main article talk page, so I am not sure now whether it would be best for me to hold off on adding this material until after the main RAIB investigation is complete.
