Move discussion

Hi there @Iveagh Gardens,

I noticed that you have moved an article formerly titled Independent politicians in Ireland to Independent politician (Ireland) ↗. I <s>vehemently</s> disagree with that decision because independent politics can differ in each region they contest. I am unhappy with this change because you <s>blatantly</s> disregarded WP:TITLECON ↗ which states that articles covering similar topics should have similar titles, you have also disregarded the decision to use the title Independent politicians in Australia ↗ for one article but a <s>completely different</s>, inconsistent title convention for Ireland.<br><s>I don't think it ever could have been a fully open discussion because you were the one to open '''and''' close that discussion which is consequential regarding the future of the article, that behaviour is expressly prohibited per Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions#Conflicts of interest ↗, it's also an abandonment of one of Wikipedia's main principles which is to gain consensus before major changes ↗ to any page and not unilateralism.</s><br>I think this is one of the most important quotes from WP:TITLECON: "titles for the same kind of subject should not differ in form or structure without good reason", the article I am referring to has a different title <s>'''without''' ''any''</s> good reason. I wish to potentially start a move review if this discussion leads nowhere but I noticed on the page for that process ↗ that I should discuss this issue with you directly first.<br>If you cannot find consensus, '''do not''' close the move request yourself if you initiated it, someone will find the template and close it after seven days, if you need greater participation for a <s>real</s> consensus, don't be afraid to notify users on a WikiProject using Template:RM notice ↗ or elicit greater participation by resisting the discussion ↗.

Hope to come to a resolution, Qwerty123M (talk) 02:46, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

Updated at 09:28, 6 January 2026 (UTC). I am very sorry for making comments that were too harmful. I have added strikethrough to some of the comments I think are extremely negative, harsh and should not have been said. I also just now realise some errors that autocorrect made! I shouldn't change those errors because they are now part of the archive of what I originally said, and this whole move review process is something I want to leave behind.

:Quite happy to discuss (and would have done so without so many citations to the guidelines!). I'm on holidays right now, but let me get back to you in the later part of next week. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 05:47, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

Moving Dáil constituencies

Hi Iveagh Gardens, I noticed an issue concerning the moving of Dáil constituencies in order to remove the disambiguator. This is causing a problem with the TD Template, e.g. {Galway West (Dáil constituency)/TDs}. The template displays correctly on the TDs article and it display mostly ok on the article, e.g. Galway West ↗, but it does not display the refs at all, leading to many refs errors in the reference list. I think the template is expecting '(Dáil constituency)' at the end of the Constituency article name, and errors happen when it differs. I'm not technical enough to attempt to edit the template itself, but I think this issue should be sorted before moving anymore Dáil constituency article. I came across it while moving Wicklow-Wexford but have since reverted my changes. Spleodrach (talk) 17:10, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

:Thanks for letting me know. I'll have a look at that and see what's gone wrong there. Otherwise, I'll pause any Dáil constituency article page moves. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 17:17, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
:I can see the problem. Template:Constituency Teachtaí Dála navbox#Assumptions ↗ observes that "any inconsistency of article titles will probably break this template irreparably". It is still coming up ok on the biographical articles, see e.g., the various navigational boxes for fellow Donegal South-West ↗ and Donegal–Leitrim ↗ TDs on the Joseph Brennan (Fianna Fáil politician) ↗ article. However, the template strips references from any page that doesn't end with the (Dáil constituency) suffix. This is so references don't appear in a navigation template. I'm not sure if there's a simple fix for that; it might be possible for the references to be stripped only when it is within a navigation template, and not the text of the source table itself. For the moment though, we should hold off on changes; Dáil constituencies may have to wait before updating to the naming convention. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 17:34, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
:Very specifically, it's the code in Template:Irish TD table Dáil ↗, which provides: {{code|# Now insert refs, but only if we are in a constituency article}} (with the relevant coding following). Maybe that could be altered, with code to recognise the use of the navbox. But I'm not sure I'm the one to do that! Iveagh Gardens (talk) 18:20, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
::Maybe you can ask an editor with technical skills, to fix the template so it works with or without the suffix (Dáil constituency). Spleodrach (talk) 11:18, 23 December 2025 (UTC)
:::I will do. Something I'll have a chance to frame maybe in the days between Christmas and New Year. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 11:21, 23 December 2025 (UTC)

Unnecessary disambiguators

I noticed you moved Galway West ↗ and Donegal North-East ↗ to add a paranthetical disambiguator, both of which are unnecessary as Wikipedia has no other articles by this name. See WP:AT ↗, particularly WP:PRECISE ↗ and the sections that follow, as well as the explanatory essay at Wikipedia:Consistency in article titles#Don't add unnecessary disambiguators simply for consistency ↗. Before I revert these moves I wanted to check with you – is there some reason why these are necessary that I'm not seeing? – <span style="color:#333">'''brad''v'''''</span> 15:26, 25 December 2025 (UTC)

:There is! If you see the move logs, you'll notice that I had recently moved those to their shorter titles. However, another user alerted me to a coding error that occurs with a template requiring the disambiguator in the title (see the discussion above this one). It's something we'll look into over the weekend. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 15:30, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
::Okay, I'm glad I checked with you. I see there is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ireland#Removing (Dáil constituency) from article titles when not necessary for disambiguation ↗, and that you're trying to do the right thing. Let me know if I can help. – <span style="color:#333">'''brad''v'''''</span> 15:36, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
:::How are you with coding? Template:Irish TD table Dáil ↗ is coded to strip references when not used on an article with (Dáil constituency) in its title. This allows it to be used in a navigation template without references appearing in the navigation template. See, for example, Catherine Callaghan (politician) ↗, with the TDs for Carlow–Kilkenny (Dáil constituency) ↗ navigation at the end. It would work if we could code it so that the references were stripped when it was used within a navigation template, but not within the body of an article. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 16:00, 25 December 2025 (UTC)
::::It looks like this is hard-coded into the template in multiple spots, and it's not just about stripping the references. See :Template:Constituency Teachtaí Dála navbox#Assumptions ↗. The real magic happens in :Template:Is this a Dáil constituency article ↗, although the titles are also presumed to follow this naming pattern in other places, such as :Template:Constituency Teachtaí Dála navbox/core ↗. I'm going to need to think about this. – <span style="color:#333">'''brad''v'''''</span> 16:59, 25 December 2025 (UTC)

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hi Iveagh Gardens. Thank you for your work on Electoral Law Act (Northern Ireland) 1968 ↗. Another editor, Mariamnei, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol ↗ and left the following comment:

{{Bq|1=Thank you for your work on this article. Unfortunately, it is not yet ready for main space. Please add secondary coverage and establish notability as per WP:GNG ↗. I will be moving it to draft. Please feel free to republish once it meets the above criteria. Thanks and have a wonderful day!}}

To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{code|<nowiki>{{Re|</nowiki>Mariamnei<nowiki>}}</nowiki>}}. <small>(Message delivered via the Page Curation ↗ tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)</small><!-- Template:Sentnote-NPF -->

Mariamnei (talk) 10:09, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

:{{u|Mariamnei}}, thanks for your review of this article. It is one that has 58 mainspace redlinks to it. However, a lot of those are generated by Template:Electoral reform in the United Kingdom ↗ and Template:Reviews of United Kingdom constituencies ↗. Its true value is from articles such as Lagan Valley (Northern Ireland Parliament constituency) ↗ and Bangor (Northern Ireland Parliament constituency) ↗, where the article, even as a stub, gives the wider context of the new constituencies created. I added the link from plural voting ↗, where the relevant text had referred to it in an unlinked form.
:In terms of secondary sources, the CAIN reproduction of it could count. The site doesn't reproduce all NI legislation, it's not simply a site such as legislation.gov.uk ↗, as selects those sources which are most relevant for the history for the Conflict Archives in National Ireland.
:That said, as with any developing article, I can put a bit more time into finding further sources for this. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 10:57, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
::Thank you for writing to me. I do think that the article could be improved and could be a good list. We're just not there yet. Good luck and have a great day! Mariamnei (talk) 11:52, 23 March 2026 (UTC)

Chamber of Deputies vs. House of Representatives

Hi there, on the Dáil articles, from the 4th Dáil to the 9th Dáil, you have put in Chamber of Deputies ↗ as a description of Dáil Éireann of the Irish Free State. Then from the 10th Dáil, it is House of Representatives ↗ for Ireland. Has this got something to do with the 1937 Constitution? If so, what? I don't understand the change in description. Spleodrach (talk) 20:10, 9 May 2026 (UTC)

:I've attempted to explain it in 9th Dáil ↗. Article 12 of the Irish Free State Constitution ↗ describes the Dáil as a Chamber of Deputies, whereas Article 15 of the Constitution of Ireland ↗ describes the Dáil as a House of Representatives. My reasoning for including it at all is that there should description accessible to a non-Irish reader, and if choosing the description, the official one is as good as any. It's also worth noting the distinctions between the text of the two constitutions. Either explains to the outsider what the Dáil is in Irish politics. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 15:37, 10 May 2026 (UTC)
