:Lovely, thanks, Lane. Not everybody understands that, though young women are the class most assiduously flattered, old men are the ones most hungry for it, eagerly lapping it up even when it's done without a name. I am especially pleased that our friend {{Ping|user:Annierau}} has exaggerated; I actually spend most days at the computer and our bike ride was only once, and she was the one who had to wait for me to catch up. Anyway I had a lot more fun than usual and hope to do it again in warmer weather. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:22, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Jersey City Photography Meetup
Jim,
Nice meeting you yesterday evening. I would like to include a photograph for the May 20th event announcement (preferably one of you, but anything you select is fine). Also, some text to include. Any info on a particular project would be good too. I will post on Meetup.com and Facebook. The text I am thinking about ...
Jim Henderson is a Wikipedian, Wikimedia Commons Photographer, and avid cyclist from Wikipedia NYC. He will present to us what Wikidata is and it impact on the world and how to contribute you photographs and other files to the service. He will show us various tools such as "shoot me" and Wikimedia Commons. His links are:

:thumb|Jim Henderson (Wikipedian) ↗
:All righty; we had communication uncertainties at both ends except I don't have the excuse of working in unfamiliar software. And obviously I'm hours later than I said. Been busy all week starting with the eclipse in Rochester, and various meetings and such starting a couple hours after my return. Tomorrow's two zoomcalls will leave me with an empty week in my calendar. With any luck I'll start catching up on my backlog of new photo editing, uploading, curating old photos, checking my 5000 watchlisted articles here in ENWP (English Wikipedia), etc. The two links are good.
:". . . . He will tell us what the Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons sites are about, and their impact on the 300+ Wikipedias and the rest of the world of free information. He will show how to contribute your photos and other kinds of knowledge such as words and data. He will show us tools such as the "WikiShootMe" Webpage and "Wikimedia Commons" Android app for pictures. . . ."
:I've lengthened your two sentences into three, so feel free to chop away any excess. Or add; whatever. As you saw in Commons, we have plenty of pictures of me; problem is they all make me look old. Well, yeah.
:For WD and photo demos, I like to use a fresh example. Presumably the building where we meet has no Wikidata item or Commons picture, and fails to meet the criteria of WP:NOTABILITY ↗. Thus, it will work nicely if you find the data (street address, construction date, owner, business tenants, height and no, of course we don't need all of those and might use any other data) beforehand. With some of that, we can build the WD item before everyone's eyes. Or some other building or old (before 20th century) statue or monument for which we can step outside and snap a picture. I like built structures because they have locations.
:As usual in talk pages, any talkpage WP:STALKER ↗ is welcome to butt in here with questions, corrections, ideas, whatever. For those people, we're talking about a meeting of a photo club near City Hall in Jersey City on May 20. At least, I think that's correct. Now I'm getting sleepy and won't search for the club's webpage. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:54, 13 April 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this '''anonymous survey ↗'''.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page ↗ and view its privacy statement ↗ .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
WMF Research Team ↗

Hello
I am stuck with this idiot at the Harlem Library, ughhh! Urahoneza (talk) 21:46, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
Meeting at Seven Stories Press
We had a pleasant and informative meeting, didn't we? Especially since there were four of us old-timers with different experiences, habits, and opinions. Not that we covered any large fraction of the gamut of Wikkians. For example, the majority think a username should be unconnected with a real name; I'm one of the minority who think it should be connected. Perhaps some don't know, we four are:
- User:Pharos
- User:Mozucat
- User:Tduk
- And last and least, User:Jim.henderson
We are pals and watch each other's Talk Page to see about their activities and problems and what Wikiparties they get invited to, so we can envy them. You should go to their page and hit the star so you can see what happens to them on your Watchlist. We have a lot more friends on our Watchlists. Pharos probably has the most of us four, because he's one of the nails that hold the ship together, somewhat. Check those activities every day or two by hitting the list-star icon near the right end of the header bar of a wikipage.
If you leave us a message, we can put you on our watchlists and see what amazing new kinds of trouble you're getting into. You don't even have to do that bit properly; if you're signed in and, after bumbling, hit the blue Publish button so we can see what went wrong and whom to help. So far, I've got one message in Simple English by
User:Librarysparkle
but don't know who that is. I have replied to it both in English and in Simple English. Better to answer here in English Wikipedia where more will see it. Now for some of the points that arose:
Che Guevara is "semi-protected" because of vandalism. Vandalism on 99.9% of articles is repaired by editors having them on our watchlist, and undoing them. However, some articles are biographies of hated people, or other hated topics, and their vandalism can overwhelm this usual method. Current and recent US Presidents, UK Prime Ministers and similar politicians are very much hated, so they end up with the highest protection. Che Guevara apparently attracts far less hatred anymore, or for whatever reason he gets the lowest level of protection.
Some of us old-timers have the power to give you the power to edit the article anyway, but we won't. Instead, we tell you to open a request in the article's Talk Page. This might work directly, which is to say a watcher will see that this is a completely reasonable change, and make it. It might also work indirectly. Remember that business about ten edits? Making the request counts as one of the ten. Replying to the reply, if any, counts as one of the ten. Editing other articles counts. Creating your own User Page counts. Improving it counts. Leaving a message in my User Talk Page counts. Replying to a message in your own User Talk Page counts. Anything you add, subtract, or change in any page while signed in, counts.
Pretty soon it adds up to ten edits and now you are automatically upgraded, and free to get into more trouble. One good trick for possibly sensitive edits is to give a few days' warning. Since you have warned any watchers by asking on the Article Talk Page, they may be ready to pounce on any misstep. Good; you are also ready. So, make the edit with an edit summary that briefly says why. If someone objects, the Article Talk Page is your tool and ally, and is likely to attract sympathetic watchers of the article including, for now, me. By this time you've got a track record of not-too-bad edits, and that also increases your credibility.
As for mentioning a book your firm has published, the publisher definitely doesn't belong in the text of the article, and probably the author and title don't. They belong in the citation, which automatically makes a footnote.
Oof, this is more than I intended, about a possible problem that probably won't really be a problem. I'm sending this, and copying it to my ENWP User Talk Page (best to reply here; this is not a matter that needs privacy) and see what's on television before going to sleep.
Oh; I almost forgot. Tomorrow, Tuesday afternoon at 4PM I'm meeting another newbie at the Brooklyn Heights Branch Library on Cadman Plaza West. We will discuss various issues but intend to concentrate on pictures. Perhaps a few of you will want to join us at the library or at 7PM at the Park Plaza Restaurant a couple blocks north of the library. We wouldn't want a crowd, but might be good with as many as half a dozen. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:40, 10 December 2024 (UTC)

Trollbots and scientists
: I put this comment into Quora, replying to a scientist who found WP editorial interactions "unprofessional". I think it might also interest fellow Wikiians:
Well, most people have very little idea how scientific publishing works, either. I have a rough idea from reading, not much of hard-core science but more of ''Sky & Telescope'' and some of the more outward-facing bits of ''Nature'' and ''Science'', and from chatting with scientists. Not many people have ever chatted with a scientific researcher, either; most just see reports by journalists, who are careful about accuracy but also seek to make each story inherently interesting. Come to think of it, most people have never chatted with a working professional journalist; I’ve met several over the years at Wikipedia events and elsewhere; twice they made me the subject of news reports.
Last night I told my journalistic interviewer that she should read a novel, “The Editors” by Stephen Harrison. He’s a freelance journalist who has covered Wikipedia in ''Slate'' and various other minor online news sites. I met him at a WP teaching event last year (focused on music in the Bronx) and again at a book signing though I forgot to bring my copy to be signed. I also attended a promo that he did in August at the Wikimania convention in Poland. The early main setting is clearly based on last year’s Wikipedia Day celebration at Columbia University, and the descriptions give some idea of the flavor of our bigger nerdfests. I was able to recognize friends as the bases of some of the characters. Alas, I don’t seem to be in it.
One of the topics I teach is Wikipedia politics. In the old days, tech questions were more important; the markup language was difficult. Nowadays our editing software is better, and new editors run more quickly into resistance from my fellow old-timers. Many articles have a lot of trouble with people who get fired up about some issue in real-world politics, history, science or other topic that has multiple controversies, and eagerly adjust an article to reflect whatever high truth has been revealed to them.
Lately we more often suffer organized attackers who create large numbers of dummy accounts to push articles to one PoV or another. Distinguishing the truly expert or seriously thoughtful people from the trollbots and crackpots takes considerable patience; some of the thousands of experienced surveillance editors are forced to make hasty judgements. I try to tackle this problem from the newbie end, teaching the few that show up for meetings, how they can gain credibility like mine.
Real-world scientists, scholars, journalists etc can get credentials in their field by spending studious years in specialized schooling. We don’t have credentials but rather informal credibility, which is only modestly easier and quicker. Fixing this system by creating formal accreditation would mean formally abandoning the principle that “Anybody can edit” which is what brought me and most of my fellow now-credible editors into participation. Other possible methods were under discussion last night, most of them attempting to solve the VPN trollbot problem caused in part by our anonymity policy. Wikipedia is of course an encyclopedia rather than a medium of research results. Generally a scientific article is about something new. Often it is intended to settle, unsettle, or extend a previous conventional wisdom and is bound to be something like a boxing match. Since this kind of boxing is the bread and butter (oof, talk about mixing metaphors) of scientific publishing, a body of established procedures tries to ensure fairness by carefully delineating right and wrong ways for every move.
Wikipedia articles are mostly intended to be more like a science survey article of conventional wisdom, than a scientific paper, so far as they resemble scholarly works at all. Basically, we do dead science, explaining that spiral nebulas are huge swarms of billions of stars as everybody knows, rather than what Wikipedia would have said a century ago when there were still two sides to the question. It’s like science history, rather than current lively research. We have more in common with science journalists, than with scholarship on questions that are interesting mainly because they still have two more or less equal sides.
The same Wikipedia rules, guidelines and formal suggestions apply to all topics, not just science. Conventional practices, in contrast, differ to some degree in different fields. I have only lightly dipped into arts articles, for example, because they are mostly biographies of living people, and I hate living people because the rules are tightly constraining and the articles have a habit of straying into conflicts of interest. However, I have taught artists this difficult bit of craft and discovered that, among other oddities, the custom of arts editors is to shy away from bullet lists. This is a reluctance I have never seen in any other body of topical editors. So, it’s easy to get tangled into questions of whether we’re doing something the conventional way.
Back in the good old days of gentlemanly duels, participants followed a code duello ↗ that prescribed a “second” for each gentleman and a neutral, gentlemanly judge or two and various other proprieties to ensure gentlemanly methods of shooting or swordsmanship. Wikipedia is less refined; we don’t do much of assigned roles; every editor who identifies a right and a wrong is likely to jump in on that selected side.
However, I have done some small bits of mediation. For example, several years ago an edit war broke out in the intro to the Cat ↗ article, about evolution. One side wanted to explain in the intro about how natural selection produced sensitive hearing and night vision in cats, and the other wanted to explain how these powers are actually divine. They were fighting like cats and dogs, but I stepped in and explained what an introductory section was for.
Millions of animal species are known, and many thousands of taxonomical groups have their own Wikipedia article, and no, the introductions to those thousands of articles are not every one going to discuss the mechanics of evolution, anymore than every species introduction will discuss adenosine triphosphate and other universal details of life. Neither side was satisfied, and indeed once the top of the article had been denied to them as a battlefield, they took no interest in fighting their battle in one of the lower sections or in the article about Cat senses ↗.
But it ain’t easy, since we are indeed mostly just a bunch of miscellaneous amateurs and many are propelled less by the quest for knowledge than by the passion for dominance. Obviously we have editors who are real zoologists; one of them is an acquaintance of mine, but they all had more sense than to join a squabble among us cockroaches. Jim.henderson (talk) 10:27, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for the edit
To the Canadian Confederation page. Every so often I come across one of your edits, and think "I recognize that name", and then I check your user page, and think "Oh, right, that fellow." And then I spend some time just browsing your user and talk pages, and smiling at what you're up to, and how much you contribute. Thanks. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 13:37, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
:Why, thanks. In recent years I've been more a photo curator in Commons than an editor in the encyclopedia, and my ENWP activity has been mostly limited to reviewing edits by others, or reading articles on a topic that has momentarily attracted my curiosity. At this moment there's an ad break in the Murdock Mystery about a death by botulism but I don'tintend to look up that bit of toxicology. An earlier episode had a detail about Canadian Confederation, and in the article, as often happens, I noticed a shortcoming and adjusted it. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:23, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

:Hi. Darn; I haven't done Reddit in many months and I'm surprised to hear anything coming from that direction. Anyway, the way to communicate via User Talk Pages like this one, is to start by clicking on "Create account" in the upper right corner. Pick a username (I use my real name to make finding me easy) and password. Come back to this page, say you've done that, and tell us something about what you would like to do in Wikipedia. I say "us" because we editors watch each other's Talk Page so we can butt in and help.

Update: New Event-Organizer Tools for You on English Wikipedia!
<section begin="message"/>
Hello,
I hope you're doing well! As an event coordinator on English Wikipedia, I’m happy to share some news with you. You now have the event-organizer right! This gives you access to the CampaignEvents extension, a powerful set of tools to help you organize and promote events and WikiProjects more easily.
With the CampaignEvents extension, you can:
- Manage event registration directly on English Wikipedia.
- Use the Invitation List tool to find potential participants for your events/WikiProjects
- Receive automatic promotion of your events via the Collaboration List ↗
Learn more on mw:Help:Extension:CampaignEvents ↗
Now that I have your attention, I’d also like to share some updates to the extension:
- The Collaboration List ↗ can now be transcluded ↗, meaning you can easily embed it on other wiki pages to share event details with more people by adding <nowiki>{{Special:AllEvents}}</nowiki>. Learn more ↗.
- Admins can now determine which namespaces are permitted for Event Registration on English Wikipedia, via Special:CommunityConfiguration. Right now, the Event namespace is permitted by default for Event Registration. However, other namespaces (such as Wikipedia, WikiProject, etc) can now be added as permitted namespaces by admins too. This can help other types of organized activities, such as WikiProjects, use Event Registration. For details, please visit: Permitted_namespaces ↗
If you need help using these new tools, I’m here to support you. Feel free to reach out for guidance. You can also find some useful video guides on Commons ↗.
We’re excited to see how you use these tools for WikiProjects or events! If you have any questions, please let me know.

The Historic FDNY Fireboat John D McKean
Hi Jim,
I am a member of the Fireboat McKean Preservation Project organization. I noticed that you started the page regarding the McKean Fireboat back in 2010. A lot of positive activity has taken place regarding the restoration of the McKean Fireboat over the past few years. For starters, the John D McKean Fireboat is now on the State and National Register of Historic Places. I recently submitted an application to the National Parks Service to determine whether or not the McKean Fireboat can be designated a National Historic Landmark. Aside from adding any new updates regarding the McKean Fireboat, I would also like to change the photo you placed on the opening page with a photo that reflects the current status of the fireboat.
My best,

Draft:Kleinschmidt Inc ↗
Hi Jim, way back in 2009 and 2010, you made a few good edits to an article about a company called Kleinschmidt Inc.. The article was deleted in Aug 2025, apparently for lack of WP:Notability (organizations and companies) ↗. Knowing its historic accomplishments, I asked for the article to be resurrected and I've been working hard expanding the article (added over 15.5 kbyte ↗s just in the last week). The article now exists in draft-space as Draft:Kleinschmidt Inc ↗. If you have the ''time or interest'', I'd love to invite you to help expand it before I/we submit it for review. Old fashioned Wikipedian values
I've been trying to get the word out about the stroller ↗ article I created yesterday (since the technicality of it previously existing as a redirect seems to matter to some people, I'll note that history). Anyways, I'm currently using one of your photographs in the article and I was wondering if you'd be willing to chip in a little to help expand the article out. I've been making a flurry of changes here and there and have some ideas on the talk page, but I plan to take a break for the rest of the night. <span style="color:mediumpurple">Clovermoss</span><span style="color:green">🍀</span> (talk) 01:14, 18 March 2026 (UTC)
Wikipedia day 2026
This was a hard day for me, for unrelated reasons, so I'll tell the story here.
A toothache had arisen, so on Tuesday Dr Sam the dentist took an X-ray and said, "Uh-oh; needs quick attention". So, he recommended his favorite endodontist, who would only do this kind of work on Saturdays.
"Oh, no; that's Wikipedia Day," I cried with alarm. He also said another one could do it instead of the best he knew. "No, I'll go for the best. No; not next Saturday; I can't stand it that long."
So, on Saturday as my friends were greeted in Brooklyn, I met Dr Roberta, a sweet little old lady who put me at ease and let me natter on about how much fun I was missing at Wikipedia Day. In the chair she juiced me with local anesthetic and got to work. The main reason I went to the specialist was, my big rotten molar had become delicate and likely to come apart when pulled and require a lot more work. After more prep and warning about how scary it would sound, she stepped aside for her large, strong young gentleman colleague who was the reason she only does this work on Saturdays. Turned out, his knowledge were not needed this time but only his power to pull hard, smooth, and more precisely than a sweet, bright little old lady could do. The tooth came out whole. Blood was fairly plentiful but soon staunched.
"Did you know anyone, just anyone at all, can edit Wikipedia? Does that make it unreliable?" she asked her strong young colleague. He hesitated, and I filled in with a feeble answer in the negative but not a real explanation. Feeling better while walking home, I picked up my laptop and took the subway to the Brooklyn Tech CUNY auditorium in Downtown Brooklyn, almost three hours late.
Lots of nice smart strangers and some similarly equipped friends greeted me in the lobby. Right away I lucked upon some confused newbies who wondered how they could contribute to our picture collection. I introduced them to Wikiphotographers among my old friends. In the auditorium I chanced to sit between my friends Fred and Ray, both Wikiphotographers but unknown to each other, and introduced them. I had hoped four particular librarians would show up, who didn't: First, Diane the Wicked Librarian of Brooklyn who, for some mysterious reason, decided a week in the French Riviera with her hot young husband would be more fun than a Saturday afternoon in Downtown Brooklyn with her foolish old uncle. I do not know what distractions kept away Diane the Good Librarian of Newark, and Mary and Doreva the librarians of Philadelphia. Partly making up for their absence, the panel discussion of Wikipedia and Librarians was lively and informative. There was also supposed to be a classroom but I didn't feel lively enough to look for it.
Having arrived late I was ready to sit for more talk, but the theater was shutting down for the day, and movie producer Megs invited a bunch of us to attend a preview of her partly finished "Rabbithole" which is mostly interviews of various New York Wikiians who were meeting last year in Bushwick including me. Me! We walked a mile down to the screening room and I sat next to one of our librarians who, like most the people in the screening room, is in the movie. I suspect a few of the interviewees have not been in the United States in recent years so I don't know where Megs caught them. She said the finished product would be released early next year.
I failed to appreciate how much of my apparent energy was merely overstimulation due to being among so many smart, kind-hearted people. Standing up and walking to the subway was difficult, though my kind-hearted friend Ann was able help a little. I somewhat had to drag my exhausted self up the stairs and to bed.
I have not yet recovered entirely, though I'm already stronger than before the dental work. I intend to spend part of the long weekend in recovering, out of town with my niece. Not the Wicked Librarian but the other niece, the Good Doctor, and her beautiful little family. During the week I'll visit Dr Roberta again to have my stiches pulled out. I'll attempt to recruit her into editing on her own or, even better, into attending one of our meetings and talking with some of our smarter and friendlier colleagues. Hi, Mr. Henderson,
I'm writing a book about the architect of Christ Church in Glen Ridge and would like to use some of your photos (plus others you may not have posted) in the book. The text is 99.99% complete, so it is the pix that are the stumbling block. You can contact me at plains.architecture@gmail.com

:Sorry to be so late replying. A few weeks ago I suffered an injury that will probably hamper my activities for the rest of my life, and must learn to make adjustments. We have two pictures in Commons:Category:Christ Church (Glen Ridge, New Jersey) ↗, one by me and one by someone else. If you click on mine and scroll down, you will see the license as "CC0 Universal Public Domain". Back in those days, that was my standard license. It means you and everyone else already have permission to use it however you like. No need to notify me that you have done it; just go ahead and use it. I will appreciate a credit to "Jim.henderson via Wikimedia Commons" but it is not required. A few authors have kindly sent me a copy of the book or magazine where they used my pictures; that's rather pleasant of them.
:thumb|left|Christ Church in Bloomfield & Glen Ridge: The other ↗
:The other picture is by someone else. That one, as you can see, is licensed as CC-SA which is more complex and restrictive. Probably the conditions of that license will make it unusable for your book unless the author gives you a specific okay. Jim.henderson (talk) 08:03, 7 June 2026 (UTC)
