Inflation calculations
I think those are too low concerning wages. A servant's annual wages then was between £6 and £9. That calculator might work for goods purchased, but I think it should be a considerably more for wages. See this: https://www.measuringworth.com/calculators/ppoweruk/ -- Ssilvers (talk) 02:30, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
:Interesting. The website you linked says:
::If you want to compare the value of a £4 Income or Wealth, in 1793 there are four choices. In 2025 the relative:
::* real wage or real wealth value of that income or wealth is '''£659.10'''
:::'''Real Wage or Real Wealth''' measures the purchasing power of an income or wealth by its relative ability to buy a (fixed over time) bundle of goods and services such as food, shelter, clothing, etc. This bundle does (in theory) not change over time. This measure uses the RPI.
::* labour earnings of that income or wealth is '''£7,459.00'''
:::'''Labour Earnings''' measures the amount of income or wealth relative to the wage of the average worker. This measure uses one of the wage indexes.
:The former figure is slightly higher than the number given by the Wikipedia calculator because it's based on the RPI rather than the CPI that is used by Wikipedia and the Bank of England, and (iirc) the RPI uses a slightly different averaging method.
:Do you think the labor earnings figure would be more appropriate? I'm not actually sure I fully understand what would be more correct here. (I will also look into it a bit further.)
:And for the Grimaldi article, what about income to a specific theater performance, e.g. the earnings of £20,000 for Mother Goose? Kognise (talk) 02:47, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
::After further research, it seems like the Wikipedia/BoE number is more accurate for purchasing power, but the labor earnings number is more accurate for social/earnings status relative to others. I think either we should only use the former number, because the purchasing power interpretation may be the most common, or perhaps include both if there's a good way to do so?
::For the Mother Goose fortune and theater earnings, I think I will update the calculation to be based on the UK GDP as that should be more accurate. Kognise (talk) 02:56, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
::One compromise might be a qualifier like "in 2025 purchasing power" or "in 2025 prices", if not including both figures. Alternately, including only the much larger labor figure with its own qualifier. Kognise (talk) 03:03, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
