Wikipedia and copyright
30px|link=|alt=Control copyright icon ↗ Hello Missclaireallen! Your additions to :This Man... This Woman ↗ have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain ↗ or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible ↗ copyright license. (''To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission ↗''.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright ↗ and plagiarism ↗ issues.
- You can only copy/translate a ''small'' amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation mark ↗s (") and cite the source using an inline citation ↗. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content ↗ in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners ↗, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information ''in your own words and structure'', in proper paraphrase ↗. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems ↗, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing ↗. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify ↗ the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research ↗.
- We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use ↗ images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria ↗ in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
- If ''you'' own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you ''may'' be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, ''to the world'', into either the public domain ↗ (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible ↗ copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials ↗.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia ↗. See also Help:Translation#License requirements ↗.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked ↗ from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. <!-- Template:uw-copyright-new --> DanCherek (talk) 14:11, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for letting me know. My apologies - I didn’t realise I wasn’t allowed to copy a paragraph of text. I’ve just noticed though, that I’m now unable to make contributions to Wikipedia articles - is this permanent or just a temporary thing? And is it because of the above? What can I do to have this restriction lifted? Missclaireallen (talk) 16:48, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Stop
Please stop changing the nationality of celebrities. You clearly do not understand what you are doing. Every change you made was wrong. WWGB (talk) 05:14, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
This is not true. And I understand exactly. As someone who works in the arts and is an expert on pop culture here in Australia, I can guarantee you some of these actors are either Australian or have dual nationalities. Americans are always trying to claim ours as their own the second they develop international renown. Can I kindly ask what makes you any more of an expert on pop culture than myself? Missclaireallen (talk) 05:18, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
:Because I closely read the evidence in Wikipedia articles before making an edit. Saying Weaving, Gibson or Watts is Australian is patently false. None of them hold Australian citizenship. WWGB (talk)<
With the greatest respect, one doesn’t have to hold Australian citizenship to be considered an Australian. My parents have been here over 40 years and don’t hold citizenship but they are considered Australians in every regard except for that piece of paper. To not acknowledge fundamental links to Australia by actors who’ve grown up here from a very young age or learned and developed their craft here, is really unfortunate and quite misleading, There are many different definitions as to what makes someone a particular nationality. But in most cases I’ve left some of these actors’ nationalities as dual, rather than solely Australian, because of these nuances. To see Nicole Kidman for example, listed as solely American and not Australian or even Australian-American is preposterous. She herself would even be puzzled by that. Missclaireallen (talk) 05:33, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
:The law us the law. It is the only consideration. If a migrant chooses not to become a citizen, as is their right, they can "feel" Australian, but they will never "be" Australian. Anyway, I have made my point, and will not accept any change to celebrity citizenship without appropriate legal status. Regards, WWGB (talk) 05:48, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
That’s fine. Do whatever you like. So long as you know there’s not a person in the world who would consider Nicole Kidman an ‘American’ actress, including herself (check her ACTUAL bio)🤷♀️
Honestly, I’ve put in countless hours of work in my own free time to Wikipedia over the years (purely because pop culture is not only my area of expertise, but my passion), without a modicum of acknowledgement or thanks, and am only ever acknowledged (and rudely told ”STOP!), when considered ‘wrong’. Quite disheartening really. I’m sorry I bothered. Missclaireallen (talk) 06:01, 18 February 2023 (UTC)
:For what it's worth, the guideline is at this section of the Manual of Style for biographies ↗. Also see these observations on Wikipedia behaviour, which talk about it being necessary to be indifferent to praise or blame to survive on Wikipedia ... but also say: "It's easier to burn down a dilapidated building than to fix it. The bigger the ego, the more pyromaniacal the impulse." Take your pick. '''Graham'''<span style="color: green;">87</span> 16:37, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi Graham87 - sorry I’m not sure whether your comment was towards myself or the other person in the thread? Is there somewhere else I can chat to you about this? Missclaireallen (talk) 16:59, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
:The comment was towards yourself. Maybe I should've started a new section ... '''Graham'''<span style="color: green;">87</span> 07:33, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Yeah probably would’ve been better, as I really didn’t want to rehash this unpleasant conversation that left a sour taste. I’m usually a lot more amenable but I took exception to being spoken to by the user so rudely and abrasively for actually trying to do some helpful work. That was just poor form. As the message at the bottom of the talk box says: “Please be kind. Remember, we are all humans here” - which seems to be at odds with the subsequent underlying message of “if you can’t take criticism, maybe this isn’t the place for you”. I can indeed take criticism - but it’s the manner in which it’s delivered that makes or breaks an exchange. I choose to do Wiki edits as I have overwhelming PTSD, so this provides a way of me taking on a task that requires little chance if exacerbating that - kindness really does goes a long way. Missclaireallen (talk) 07:43, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
I would also iterate that It’s not entirely my onus of responsibility to be more resilient or thick skinned when someone is being abrasive. I’m not a troll or a vandal or a troublemaker. Just someone who’s trying to be helpful, so stern words are perhaps best directed elsewhere. Just really disappointed. Perhaps next time the user could offer advice or guidelines rather than unnecessarily yell at me in all caps. A good mentor should get a leader rather than a boss - less by example rather than boss around. I purely got my back up in defence at not being spoke to like a human. Missclaireallen (talk) 07:48, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- be a leader * lead by example (apologies - typos). Kindness is free. ❤️ Missclaireallen (talk) 07:51, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Fostered content
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia, including your efforts to improve formatting.
Fostered content ↗ is a type of lint error ↗ that is triggered when some content is in a table structure but not where it can be visible. Specifically, content in tables can only be present in table cells, table headings, and captions. Content inserted elsewhere gets moved before the table. In some cases, this may be what the author intended, but it is still incorrect markup.
I just edited Andrew McKaige ↗ to fix three fostered content errors you created. Please look at the page history and see what I did, and fix the fostered content errors you recently introduced in Catherine Wilkin ↗, Josh Lawson ↗, Simone Buchanan ↗ and Helen Morse ↗. Of course, it's possible that another editor will fix the errors before you do. —Anomalocaris (talk) 10:29, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

::You edited Helen Morse ↗ without fixing the errors, which are caused by headings in heading markup right at the top of tables, not in a table cell. The problem would be fixed by moving the headings out of the tables. Simone Buchanan ↗ still needs fixing. Another editor fixed the other two. —Anomalocaris (talk) 21:00, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

G'day
Thanks for your additions to :Steve Dodd ↗. Your assistance there is greatly appreciated, but there are some matters that you should be aware of. Firstly, the article is a Featured Article, and needs to be updated and frankly, brought up to current FA standards, which is what I am trying to do. As an FA, only reliable sources ↗ may be used. Online pop culture sites aren't likely to be reliable, please see WP:IMDB ↗ for information on that one, but many online film listings are user-generated and therefore unreliable. Given the article is under renovation, I'd appreciate it if you discussed any major changes on the talk page. Please don't add anything unless you provide a citation to a reliable source. At FA, each significant film needs to be placed in context, and at least a sentence fragment describing what the film was about is needed. (I noticed that you deleted some of that, suggesting it was "superfluous guff"). Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me ↗) 05:18, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
:Hi there, I appreciate your message. The tv show section I added was referencing the tv shows you added earlier in the article (which hadn't been added to the Filmography table), reiterating the exact same references you used. The remainder of the tv and film inclusions are directly from IMDB. I've previously been assured that IMDB edits are only accepted once reviewed and deemed accurate?
:Regarding the 'superfluous guff', I was simply removing information about the films that I thought would be more relevant to the films' specific Wiki pages rather than the actor's page itself. Would you like to join WikiProject Australian television?
Hi Missclaireallen, our group, WikiProject Australian television ↗, is currently recruiting additional editors to help edit the large project that is Australian TV. :Hi there, thanks for your message. I took an existing synopsis and reworded it - is the amount I amended it not considered sufficient? Missclaireallen (talk) 14:54, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
::Oh, I didn't notice that you'd paraphrased. Anyway, the answer is not really, there were still phrases and sentences that were almost or actually identical to the source (hence why I didn't notice). See Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing ↗ for more guidance on that. In my experience, you want to significantly modify both the vocabulary and sentence structure, as far as you are reasonably able. For example, the first sentence could say {{tq|Wounded American marine Rebel, who is recovering in Australia, intends to desert ↗}}; that would be an improvement over the more modest changes you had made. <span style="white-space: nowrap;">—Compassionate727 (T·C ↗)</span> 18:19, 7 September 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this '''anonymous survey ↗'''.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page ↗ and view its privacy statement ↗ .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
WMF Research Team ↗

Ling-Hsueh Tang
Hi
I see that you have been adding wikilinks to this actress, which is very helpful now that we know who she is, but as she seems to have been credited as Ling Cooper Tang almost exclusively since around 2016, I have created a redirect from that name. As it seems to be her current name, and the one that IMDb now uses, I intend to move the article over to that name tomorrow. There will still be a redirect from her old name, so the older links can stay, but if you could self-revert your recent changes where she has been credited with the new name, that would be helpful.
BTW, I see that you have a lot of DAB link notices on your page - these are automatically put there by a bot, so no need to respond, but if you want to reduce the number, there is a helpful gadget that works on web editing (not on the app though). If you want to set it up, have a look under Preferences at the top of the page, go to Gadgets, and tick the box next to "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange". It enables you to see DAB links as you edit on the web version. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 10:41, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
:Thanks so much 😊 Apologies - I had just re-reverted the previous one you changed before I got this message - would it be best to change the name on her actual profile to her updates name in that case? Missclaireallen (talk) 10:43, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
::*updated name sorry Missclaireallen (talk) 10:44, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
::*:No worries. I will move the whole article tomorrow - I ran out of time and energy and just wanted to ensure everything lined up. ☺️ Laterthanyouthink (talk) 11:05, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
::*::Appreciate your help! 🙏 I'll leave it be until then so I don't mess anything up further! Missclaireallen (talk) 11:06, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
::*:::No worries at all, and you didn't mess anything up, so don't worry! I have expanded her article and added updated and new citations, and although I'm sure there's more to add, will leave it for now because I have other stuff I need to finish off. I was hoping to find an explanation in an article about why and when she changed her name, but could not find anything. If you would like to search Wikipedia on both of her names and ensure that they all link to her (with whichever one the article has), that would be great. Hi Missclaireallen, you reverted my correction of Bud Tingwell ↗ entry where you have him in a section 'Actor' in a 2007 performance 2 years before his death in 'Metaphysical' at Castlemaine Art Gallery, Melbourne. Sorry, I should have contacted you about this before making the change. A couple of tips
Hi there Lattesandtimtams - just a couple of things that may help in your editing, that you may not be aware of. If you click on Preferences (top of your page when logged in) and then Gadgets, you will see quite a few things there. The ones I have found useful are Twinkle (adds many useful features, including the ability to request page protection by clicking on a button at the top of an article); "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" - warns you when your link leads to a DAB and saves a few of those pesky messages on your talk page (although doesn't work when editing on the mobile app, hence my still getting some!); and Hotcat (for adding categories), among others. I'll have another look at the Alexander Bertrand page once it's been protected and I have some time. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 23:59, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
:Thank you so much! I remember you mentioning to me the dab link function on the page. I do get a few of them, but I also do edit at a fairly heavy volume, so I've come to expect it from time to time. I do all editing from my iOS though so I think that's why I must be missing a lot of the functionality, unfortunately! But thanks again for the tips and tricks - it's much appreciated! 25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Thank you for your contributions ↗ to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to :A Wreck A Tangle ↗ when you modified the page, you introduced {{cl|Unknown parameters|unknown parameters}}. Just because you specify {{para|some_param|{{var|some_variable}}}} does not always mean that variable will display. The {{para|some_param}} must be defined in the template. You can look at the documentation for the template you are using but it is also helpful to use the preview ↗ button before you save your edit; this helps you find any errors you have made and ensure that the values you have added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a '''Show preview''' button. Pressing this will show you what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is strongly recommended that you use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history ↗ of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions, contact the help desk ↗ for assistance.

Recent edit reversion
In this edit here ↗, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy ↗.
I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.
I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) If you think my edit was mistaken, please politely let me know and I will investigate. <span style="color:#000E2F;padding:0 4px;font-family: Copperplate Gothic Light">S Philbrick</span><span style=";padding:0 4px;color:# 000;font-family: Copperplate Gothic Light">(Talk)</span> 00:22, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
:Hi there, I think this might be an error? I have made numerous edits to this page - ALL of which have now been reverted, rather than just one edit. When I made my edits, they were all reworded from the original source/content. However, if you feel like some of them were not sufficiently reworded, are you able to indicate which ones (so I can alter them accordingly), rather than performing a mass revert of the entirety of my edits?
:For some reason, when I click on to your edit in the app, it is glitching and won’t display (I am responding via iOS browser), so I’m unable to re-revert. Are you able to do so for me and then indicate which parts need to be further reworded, so I can amend accordingly? Thanks in advance! Lattesandtimtams (talk) 07:22, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
::I am not at home. I will be Monday. Please drop me a note then and I will investigate and respond. <span style="color:#000E2F;padding:0 4px;font-family: Copperplate Gothic Light">S Philbrick</span><span style=";padding:0 4px;color:# 000;font-family: Copperplate Gothic Light">(Talk)</span> 21:03, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
:::As I mentioned, I was out of town for a few days when I received your note that I'm back home.
:::I confess I am very puzzled by your response.
:::According to your user page you been part of Wikipedia for four years and have over 40,000 edits, yet you are acting like a brand-new editor. There's nothing wrong with brand-new editors but I typically try to go into more detail when talking to a new editor as opposed to an experienced editor. What I'm referring to is the fact that you responded to my post on your talk page without pinging me. That response was on 18 June. I understand that brand-new editor's might think they can respond on their own talk page without letting me know but typically anyone with more than a few hundred edits knows that's not the case. I pride myself on responding promptly, so I feel bad that so many days of gone by without a response. However that's past so I will now talk about my reversion.
:::Whenever we find an edit that it cheers to violate copyright policy, it is standard practice to revert all consecutive edits by the same editor. This practice has two parts. With the particular edit with a copyright violation is in the middle of the sequence of edits. It is common practice to do a revision deletion of the edit with the copyright problem to ensure that it's not visible to the general public. The way Wikipedia works, all subsequent edits while also contain the problematic text, so we revert the editing question and all subsequent edits to make sure that the problematic text is no longer visible to the public. The reason for reverting the edits before the problematic text is because of the possibility that the sequence of that it started by removing some material before adding some copyrighted text and we don't want that text removed. That man may not have been the case in this circumstance, but it is exceedingly time-consuming to investigate the complete sequence of events and determine what part of the edit can be salvaged and what part of the edit needs to be removed. Wikipedia gets thousands of reports of potential copyright violations every month and that is only a small handful of volunteers working on them, so the acceptable practice is to do a reversion of the complete sequence of edits by a single editor, then do a revision deletion of all of the edit starting with the one containing the problematic text.
:::In this particular case, the problematic edit was the first in the sequence, so the entire sequence of edits were reverted and revision deleted.
:::You said you are unable to see what happened.
:::I provided a link to my action, which I will provide again here ↗.
:::If you are still unable to read it, I will provide the complete edit summary here:

The Perfect Blend
Hi. I noticed you used this website to help improve the Dan O'Connor (actor) ↗ article, and just wanted to mention that while PB is a great resource for ''Neighbours'', it is essentially a fansite and should not be used in a BLP. There are quite a few reliable sources in the Ned Parker ↗ article that could be used to replace the PB refs, and I can highly recommend checking out the resources available through The Wikipedia Library ↗. The newspaper archives are particular helpful for these kind of articles. - <b style="color: Purple; font-family: Arial;">JuneGloom07</b> <span style="color: Green; font-family: Times New Roman;">Talk</span> ↗ 20:41, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
