Asana ↗

I've done a bit of work on it. What d'you think needs doing next? Chiswick Chap (talk) 18:30, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

: Hi Chiswick Chap. I'll continue to comment on the the article's talk page ↗ and contribute edits as well. Also, I just added myself onto Wikiproject Yoga ↗. Perhaps you'd like to as well? Morganfitzp (talk) 23:57, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
:: Yes, why not. Even if we're the only people there ;-} Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:40, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

::: I've tried to find Mittra's poses sorted by category, but the Dharma Yoga site doesn't work properly (tried in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox). What it did do was to offer exactly 4 category headings: Sun Salutations, Balancing Poses, Seated Poses, and Inversions, unfortunately failing to populate them properly (it displayed some tag commands to its database). That means it did not even attempt to classify standing, reclining, or twist poses, so I wonder where you got your numbers from? All the other columns are populated using that school of yoga's own categorisation, which is what we should have for Mittra also. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:55, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

:::: Hi there Chiswick Chap. Pardon the delay, I've been on break from editing for a few days. My Dharma Mittra tally comes from his book, ''Asanas: 608 Yoga Poses'' (Novato: New World Library, 2003). In his introduction, Mittra writes that he'd photographed himself executing 1,300 asanas, and from that session he created his original ''908 Asnans'' poster. While the asanas on the poster are categorized into sun salutes, followed by standing poses, inversions, and so on, the poster's categorization is not as explicit as the book, which organizes each pose category into a separate chapter. I'll say again, as I have on the asana talk page ↗ to quantify yoga poses for Mittra—or any other teacher—is an infinite task, as Mittra states in that same introduction, "There are an infinite number of poses—that's what makes yoga a living tradition." (Mittra, 2003, p. 13). And having practiced with Dharma Mittra, Darren Rhodes, and other teachers of asana who have published hundreds of photographs of themselves practicing so many poses, they often teach asanas that are not in their books. Morganfitzp (talk) 20:36, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

::::: Welcome back. It would I think be best to count the poses per chapter of his book rather than from the poster, then there can be an explicit ref for each total to a specific page range (or at least the chapter number) of the book. If you have it to hand ... Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:41, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

:::::: I have it right right here. Please hold... Morganfitzp (talk) 21:27, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Here are Dharma Mittra's pose quantities, listed by chapter. Note that I list number of photographic '''plates''' rather than poses because some are repeated in myriad variations, others give different views of the same pose, and others are repeated in more than one section (e.g. the Sun Salutation & Hero Series, which are made up poses from other chapters). Tallying these plates up, I get 618, and I'm unsure which 10 don't count toward Mittra's tally of 608:

Mittra and I will both attest that asanas are not quantifiable. It's like asking, "How many grains of sand are on this beach?" when any number of grains could be split into smaller grains or compounded with other grains to form a pebble of glass. While I'd altogether abandon the chart that you've so diligently created for the asana article, I also like being helpful and admire your efforts, and I do hope you enjoy this a count of something that cannot truly be counted. Morganfitzp (talk) 22:18, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
:: Indeed, and all the other authors would agree; our duty is to provide the data that exist, as they directly indicate in the table what happens when 7 authors try to count and classify — you get wildly different estimates, which is your point, and mine. Many thanks for the numbers and notes, which I've used or adapted for the table. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:48, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Well, at this distance in time, I'm not sure the table of numbers says much, I may remove them in favour of a brief cited statement about numbers, and perhaps some dates. On a different matter, I noticed that what was missing was an article about modern postural yoga ↗, i.e. the thing that is practised all over the world that isn't much to do with Hinduism. I've drafted it, met some opposition, and would be glad of your brief thoughts on the article's talk page. Happy New Year! Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:28, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Modern yoga ↗ ...

Hi, hope you're keeping well. We discussed [Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Yoga#Asana_and_related_articles back in December] how to group the asanas, and we sort of agreed to go under major headings. I've implemented this for around 100 major poses, each (I hope) with a Variations section listing some of the other things that are rather similar, or failing that with a See also section, suitably annotated.

There's also a completely rewritten List of asanas ↗ with a bit of classification of types (goes some way to resolving the how-many-are-there question, but only covers the major poses), a radically reworked Asana ↗ now with 20px ↗, and a completely new Modern yoga ↗ that has languished in the GAN queue for months (if you're at all interested...), along with its own :Template:Modern yoga ↗. I've stripped out the sales talk and guff about health benefits from all the asana articles, and have added basic sources and a bit of history to each of them. They remain inconsistently named, some still with diacritics.

You mentioned you were happy to sort things out - there's still much to do, not least to add some of the real benefits and risks in a standard format (probably all using the same sources), and to indicate which major schools use which asanas. We could, for instance, provide things like a Bikram yoga navbox for its studiously limited set of asanas... All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:24, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

: {{reply to|Chiswick Chap}} That's super. Congrats on getting Asana ↗ up to GA status and thanks for the hard work you've done on yoga articles. If there are specific tasks that you'd like me to help tackle, or sections you'd like me to look at, I'm happy to do so. Best! Morganfitzp (talk) 02:08, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

:: Thanks! I'd say the number one task would be to identify the key sources on the benefits and risks of asana practice, and to update the Health/Benefits sections of Asana ↗ and Modern yoga ↗ accordingly. If the sources point up specific asanas that are specially beneficial or specially risky, say so in the articles on those asanas also. We know, for instance, that the knees of Westerners not accustomed to long sitting cross-legged are in danger from hastily attempting padmasana, but this would need to be WP:MEDRS ↗-ishly sourced. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:27, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

::: {{reply to|Chiswick Chap}} Cool. I can commit to doing this gradually. Authors sometimes use the word "contraindications" in place of "risks," and I'd aim to keep language consistent across these articles. What do think about these terminologies? Morganfitzp (talk) 18:48, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
:::: Many thanks. Not a matter I've worked on; perhaps contraindications sounds more medical, and risks more like engineering? I'm cautious about medical-sounding terms but if it's suitably cited it should be fine. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:01, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Audience scores

Please do not add Audience scores to articles.

Please do not add Audience scores to articles. -- 109.77.232.82 ↗ (talk) 18:50, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

: If you really think Rotten Tomatoes is being unfair (it very often is, especially for tv shows) the first thing you should do is check the reviews being used. You should find out how many reviews were given to critics as a preview, or even if the reviewer was only reviewing the first episode. Even if a critic has only reviewed one episode Rotten Tomatoes might still used that review to create their score which is supposed to represent the entire season.
: People place too much trust in Rotten Tomatoes. It is also good to improve the article with actual quotes from reviews, especially if you can find a reliable critic who particularly like the series.
: To summarize, please don't add audience scores. There are always better ways to improve the article. -- 109.77.232.82 ↗ (talk) 18:58, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Erik Greatest American Hero.jpg

64px|left|alt=|link= ↗
Thank you for uploading ''':File:Erik Greatest American Hero.jpg ↗'''. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright ↗ status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page ↗.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion ↗ and ask for a chance to fix the problem.<!-- Template:You can request undeletion -->

Please refer to the '''image use policy ↗''' to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Reverts

Hi Morganfitzp. I'm sorry if you are seeing notifications about edits to this page being reverted. Belteshazzar (see Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Belteshazzar ↗ if you are curious) was using sockpuppets to try to trick you into editing on his behalf. He is de-facto banned from Wikipedia and should not be bothering other people with his tedious nonsense. You can review recent edits to Das Fürlines ↗, if you want to, but don't need to do anything, if you don't want to, and you certainly don't have to take any notice of what he says. DanielRigal (talk) 17:20, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

:Thanks. I notcied the reverts. Wikipedia is an odd enough hobby without all that! Morganfitzp (talk) 18:03, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
::This revert ↗ is worth examining. Note that the "issue" parameter causes "No." to appear, suggesting that that parameter wants a number rather than a date. I don't know whether the People Weekly quote said "they're" or "they are". The Mark E. Smith ↗ wikilink is obviously missing a ]. Near the end, there seems to be something missing after "fellow New York City". 174.62.207.69 ↗ (talk) 15:19, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Request for interview!

Hi @Morganfitzp! Apologies for the super odd solicitation, but I'm a student in Western Mass researching the Tofu Curtain for a journalism class. I was quite surprised to see there was a Wiki page for it, and I'd love to speak with you as the mastermind behind its creation.

If you're willing, please reach out to doingresearch739// @ //gmail.com and we can set up a time to call! (I know this might feel sketchy, but I can email you back via my academic email if that helps.)

Thank you,
Student in need of sources Doing some research (talk) 13:10, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

The file :File:Killed by Death KBD logo.jpg ↗ has been proposed for deletion ↗&#32;because of the following concern:
<blockquote>'''obsolete, unused, replaced by :file:Killed by Death KBD logo.png ↗'''</blockquote>

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons ↗.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{Tlc|proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary ↗ or on the file's talk page ↗.

:Yes, I think I contributed to this article as a young Wikipedian and now agree that it likely lacked sufficient sources or notability for inclusion on the site. Mission of Burma edit

Hi Morganfitzp, I noticed your recent addition to the Mission of Burma page regarding the Busted Statues track link. I ended up reverting it because it introduced a typo ("Colkege") and lacked a clear, verifiable citation for the songwriting claim. Since it's a really cool historical connection, please feel free to re-add it if you can couple it with a reliable source. Thanks for your previous work on Wikipedia.
