Introduction to contentious topics

{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to '''living or recently deceased subjects of biographical content on Wikipedia articles''', a topic designated as '''''contentious ↗'''''. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee ↗. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators ↗ have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard ↗ or you may learn more about this contentious topic ↗. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{tl|Ctopics/aware}} template.
}} Burrobert (talk) 15:29, 7 December 2025 (UTC)

History of Belarus (1991–present)

Hi {{ping|Newpictures11}} How goes it? I saw your updates to his article. You need to supply references. These are references that WP:SECONDARY ↗, that are Reliable ↗, independent and indepth and satisfy WP:V ↗. You need a reference per sentence, otherwise the stuff will need to be removed. Take a look at WP:REFB ↗. There is a wee video there half-way down on the right that shows how to create them. I reviewed the article as part of a WP:NPP ↗ sprint. I'll leave it for the moment until you reference it, otherwise I will need to remove it. I can give it a few days. Non-free images

Hello. I noticed you have twice added :File:Yefrem Sokolov.jpg ↗ to 1990 Byelorussian Supreme Soviet election ↗. The image is non-free image, as shown in the :File:Yefrem Sokolov.jpg#Summary ↗ section of the file. This means it can only be used on articles that it has a stated rationale for (for photos of individuals, this is usually only their biography). When you add images like this to other articles, a bot removes them. However, in the case of the election article, you replaced a placeholder image (:File:3x4.svg ↗), which is used to fix the width of the infobox, with the non-free image, meaning when the bot removed the image you added, the infobox is a distorted shape (see here ↗). Please check images are free ones before adding them to election articles. Cheers, Number 57 ↗ 21:04, 13 May 2026 (UTC)

:then, if it is non-free, why it even is in biography? If it would be non-free, it wouldn't be even in a biography at all. What can I do? ~2026-97747-9 ↗ (talk) 21:08, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
::WP:NFCCP ↗ sets out cases where non-free images can be used. If there isn't a free image, then use the blank placeholder. Number 57 ↗ 21:13, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
:::If I find an image that IS free, and THEN use it, would it stay? ~2026-97747-9 ↗ (talk) 21:16, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
::::Yes, but please don't just upload an image you've downloaded off the BBC News website. Images have to be genuinely free – you'll have to detail the source in any upload rationale. Number 57 ↗ 21:17, 13 May 2026 (UTC)
