The 'AI-retrieved source' inline tag
Hey there {{u|Northernhenge}}. I saw you verify and fix the source integrity in Diff/1343019333 ↗. Thank you for doing this, it is a very tedious and time consuming task. But instead of removing the {{tlx|AI-retrieved source}} tag, could you instead set the <code>checked</code> parameter:
<syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext">
{{AI-retrieved source |date=February 2026 |checked={{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}} }}
</syntaxhighlight>
That way the article is in the relevant categories, and maintains statistics for how prevalent this problem is. I also tend to leave parameters like <code>utm_source=chatgpt.com</code> intact, because then tools like Cite Unseen ↗ will mark it in the reflist, but I don't feel very strongly about that.
Again, thanks for going through this. It is tedious but important. <span class="nowrap">--G<small>urkubondinn</small> (talk)</span> 22:15, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
:Also pinging {{u|Folkezoft}}, whom I believe may have added the tag in the first place. <span class="nowrap">--G<small>urkubondinn</small> (talk)</span> 22:16, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
:Thanks {{ping|Gurkubondinn}} and {{ping|Folkezoft}}. I can do that in future, and it would effectively leave an audit trail, which makes sense. In this particular case, the ref that I kept could have easily been found without using AI, and the ones I removed were almost irrelevant, so it made sense (to me) to just put the article into a better state, but I agree that maintaining statistics – for how prevalent this problem is – is a good thing to do. My hesitation is that if one rogue editor adds one AI-retrieved source to an article, is that article then forever condemned to be in the AI-retrieved source maintenance category even after it's fixed? Would that prevent it ever becoming a GA? --Northernhenge (talk) 22:30, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
::I don't think that these categories are actually being used for anything (currently), but I am also not very familiar with the GA process. My thinking is just that it would be good to maintain audit trails and statistics as much as possible, if in the future there will be policy proposals or something like that where it could be useful to show the magnitude of this problem and how much volunteer time it drains.
::Personally at least, I would never take this as any sort of sign that an article has been "condemned" or degraded to a lower status for it. If anything, this speaks to the integrity of the sources in the article since there is an audit trail.
::But these are just my opinions, and there is nothing that prevents you (or anyone else) from removing the tags if you think that is a better approach. This is just what I do, as someone that spend far more time wading through AI-generated gunk than I would like to. The encyclopedia must be protected, and auditing the integrity of references like you just did is far more important than minute details of how to handle a tag. :)

Cetaceans source for Rockall-Porcupine
Thanks Northernhenge, that's a really useful source. I have found several other sources that are a bit more recent, but none with that sort of coverage. over both Irish and UK waters. Mikenorton (talk) 12:11, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
Oops
Thanks for fixing that error on word of mouth marketing ↗. Just to be clear, that was not an intentional deletion -- I'd had the URL selected to check it, and then must have hit a key while trying to make another edit. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 19:09, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
:That’s the kind of thing I do too! --Northernhenge (talk) 19:28, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
Didn't make any difference
Thanks for your thanks, but it didn't make any difference. See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cumbria&diff=prev&oldid=1347271460 ↗. ThoughtIdRetired TIR 20:18, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
:I can, however, see that this is a borderline case. Lists, especially ones that start, or could start, with a colon, are normally delimited with semicolons. I don't find MOS:SEMICOLON ↗ very clear though. Where it says "Semicolons are used in addition to commas to separate items in a listing, when commas alone would result in confusion" I ''think'' it means that individual lists could be delimited by either commas or semicolons. I can see both sides of this one. Semicolons can be "unwieldy" (quoting from the MOS) but they're useful when any of the list entries contain commas. Personally, I tend to use bullet-lists instead of semicolon-lists, but I know some people don't like bullets! --Northernhenge (talk) 21:04, 5 April 2026 (UTC)
Semicolons
Thank you for gently moderating that discussion to a conclusion. I hope you could remain as calm in reality as you appeared through text! A.D.Hope (talk) 19:12, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
:Thanks. It was fortunate that everybody there wanted to work towards a good solution, which is probably not always the case in every discussion! Northernhenge (talk) 19:33, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
::It isn't the case, no! I'm glad we could come to a solution, and I'll be happy to see you in a discussion again should we cross paths A.D.Hope (talk) 08:17, 11 April 2026 (UTC)

'''2024 and 2025 NPP Awards'''

'''May backlog drive'''
An article-only backlog drive is currently underway. We are hoping to make a big dent in the backlog. You can read more about it or join at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/May 2026 ↗.
'''PageTriage'''
An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed ↗ to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket ↗ if you're interested in following along.
