Closing the Gates at Hougoumont ↗

At the moment there is no image on commons of "Closing the Gates at Hougoumont", painted by Robert Gibb (1845 - 1932) in 1903. It is in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland ↗. An internet search on the painting's title throws up lots of images, do you know of a suitable digital candidate that could be uploaded onto commons? -- PBS (talk) 21:36, 27 December 2015 (UTC)
:{{reply|PBS}} I found a pretty good-sized square-on version: although it appears on a page with an ARR copyright statement, the EXIF metadata (according to ''Photoshop'') shows it as PD, so I won’t even need to fall back on Commons policy on reproductions to upload it with a clear conscience, as far as UK law is concerned. One thing concerns me regarding the painting‘s US copyright status: it would not yet have been PD as of 1996—was it certainly ''published'' before 1923? Otherwise it would be protected in the US under the URAA provisions. I’m prepared to assume it was & proceed accordingly, but I have a couple of other things to take care of first; please remind me if I don’t get to it in the next week or so. (Incidentally, while searching I was surprised to find this brochure ↗, incorrectly identifying a recent painting of the same episode, by Chris Collingwood, as Gibb’s. Evidently the event has inspired a few artists.)
:Oh, and sorry for not getting back to you about the Peninsular War a few sections above & a few months ago; that diff had nothing to do with me. You may have been thinking of {{Diff|Peninsular War|prev|654811501|this one}}, where I might well have got the wrong end of the stick; nobody’s objected since you brought the question of directions up on the Talk page, so I’m sure whatever you did is fine.—Odysseus'''<span style="color:slateblue;">1</span><span style="color:darkviolet;">4</span><span style="color:purple;">7</span>''''''<span style="color:maroon;">9</span>''' ↗ 03:12, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Edmonton streetcar map

Sure, let me know when you something for me to look over.Meters (talk) 23:21, 17 March 2017 (UTC)
:Actually, {{reply|Meters|p=,}} there’s one thing I forgot to ask earlier. The 1938 map names the ‘destination’ neighbourhoods outside the city centre: Calder, North Edmonton, Highlands, McKernan’s Lake, and Bonnie Doon. Does the 1924 map have anything like that for the western line, Jasper Place perhaps?—Odysseus'''<span style="color:slateblue;">1</span><span style="color:darkviolet;">4</span><span style="color:purple;">7</span>''''''<span style="color:maroon;">9</span>''' ↗ 23:56, 17 March 2017 (UTC)
::That line was Route 5, (green signs) but the map does not label the route or destination neighbourhood. Meters (talk) 00:47, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
:::Thanks for checking, {{Reply|Meters|p=.}} Speaking of the signs, I have a document showing them beside the corresponding route descriptions, and considered putting them on the map, but I thought they‘d create too much clutter in the downtown area and around the bridges.—Odysseus'''<span style="color:slateblue;">1</span><span style="color:darkviolet;">4</span><span style="color:purple;">7</span>''''''<span style="color:maroon;">9</span>''' ↗ 02:55, 18 March 2017 (UTC)
::::{{Ping|Meters|117Avenue}} I‘ve uploaded the map to :File:ERR route map 1938.svg ↗; all comments & criticism welcome before I add it back to the article.—Odysseus'''<span style="color:slateblue;">1</span><span style="color:darkviolet;">4</span><span style="color:purple;">7</span>''''''<span style="color:maroon;">9</span>''' ↗ 01:41, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
:::::Looks good. Nice work. I may use this when I get around to writing the EY&PR article. The only differences I noticed from the 1938 route map in the Hatcher book are:
::::#76 Ave line is shown as a straight line (your version could well be correct).
::::#Whyte Avenue north side stub is slightly longer than the south side stub.
::::#no CNR line heading NW (to St Albert?) at upper left. I suspect your version is correct.
::::#Portage Avenue line does not connect to 103 Street line. I believe this is correct since the book specifically states that the Portage Ave line was never connected to the rest of the system
::::#CPR line in Strathcona goes through a tunnel under the 109 Street cross-over track at the South end of the High Level bridge. This is correct. The tunnel still exists and the streetcar grade can still be seen climbing from the end of the bridge to the road grade up the west side of the railway cut. It is now used as a bike trail.
::::#The 102 Avenue line does not appear at all. It was abandoned in 1932, but I don't know when the rails were lifted, so I don't know which version is correct. The Portage Avenue line (unused many years—if ever—and not connected to the rest of the system) still appears on the 1938 map, suggesting that the 102 Ave line had already been removed. Or maybe the Portage Avenue line wasn't used but was not yet formally abandoned. It's quite possible the other version of this map you have seen is a more accurate update. Meters (talk) 02:23, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
{{outdent}} Thanks for the thorough check, {{Reply|Meters|p=.}}
# Thinking they add a lot of clutter, I got rid of the side-of-the-road notations, instead drawing the roadways as thick white strokes (some of which seem out of alignment—I have yet to check whether it‘s my drawing or the rendering) and putting the black stroke, which represents the track, on the side indicated by those notations (often already evident from the orientation of lay-bys <small>or whatever they’re called</small>). In this case the line along 76 Avenue is indicated to change sides, so I made the black stroke cross over approximately midway between the two pairs of arrows on the original. Does that make sense?
# Will fix.
# I got that bit from a current map: having seen it in a provincial railway map c.1930, I deduced ↗ it would have been there in 1938. I only added it when extending the drawing westward to accommodate the 102 Av ERR line. Yes, on branching from the Calder Yards line it parallels St. Albert Trail briefly, before turning north just shy of the next range road (now 156 St). I used the same railway map for the city boundaries, and also to conclude that the EY&PR spur running NW from near the west end of Jasper Av ended somewhere in the vicinity of what is now Coronation Park. I can probably find the URL if you‘re interested—just don’t remember the site offhand (Peel Collection maybe?)—there were a lot of related maps there.
# Will fix.
# I missed that; will add.
# The 102 Avenue line is from the 1924 map, including your description of the rails at the western end and of the period of service. (I have no reason to think my 1938 map, which I downloaded from here before it was deleted as NFC with inadequate rationale, is any different from the one in the book—aside from faults in digitizing.) I hadn’t considered the interpretation of what I called “former lines” as unused tracks still installed, but thought of it solely in a historical sense. And that wouldn’t explain the Portage Av line‘s appearance in the 1938 map but not the 1924. Should that be made clearer in the legend? I thought saying “lines” would avoid implying whether or not the infrastructure was still there. Maybe “former services“ or something?—Odysseus'''<span style="color:slateblue;">1</span><span style="color:darkviolet;">4</span><span style="color:purple;">7</span>''''''<span style="color:maroon;">9</span>''' ↗ 04:12, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

The voting phase begins at 00:01 on 16 December and runs until 23:59 on 31 December. Questions may be asked of candidates at any stage in the process. Elected coordinators will serve a six-month term from 1 January through 30 June 2026.

Just to explain myself

Thanks for reverting my edit to Talk:The Beatles ↗, I was looking at the wikiproject banner to doublecheck how something was implemented and I assumed someone had inserted the name of an altogether different Epstein as a form of subtle vandalism. In hindsight that would have thrown up an error rather than being invisible. Sorry for the trouble! Zygmeyer (talk) 23:36, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
:{{Reply|Zygmeyer}} not at all; also in hindsight I guessed that must have been the reason for the false alarm. No harm done anyway … and Happy New Year!—Odysseus'''<span style="color:#6A5ACD">1</span><span style="color:#9400D3">4</span><span style="color:purple">7</span>''''''<span style="color:maroon">9</span>''' ↗ 02:12, 4 January 2026 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Destubathon of the Americas ↗

You are invited to participate in the '''Destubathon of the Americas ↗''', a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to £2000 ($2680) in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hopefully we can achieve something significant in the month of May together! ♦ <span style="font-variant:small-caps;color:#aba67e">''Dr. Blofeld''</span> 17:23, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
