Copy Editing question:

Saw some of your edits for the April blitz, how did you learn to copy edit so well and comprehensively. I'm trying to get good at it, but I have issues telling when tone and flow are poor, any help is appreciated but not expected. Oofgl (talk) 17:35, 14 April 2026 (UTC)

:@Oofgl Thank you for reaching out!
:'''For flow,''' the easiest thing to start with, in my opinion, would be watching for sentence length. If you notice a particularly long sentence, sometimes trying to split it into two can be an easy fix. Short sentences are much more digestible than long ones! Other times, there may be unnecessary language that can be removed while still conveying the same thing; for example, I could've typed 'exact same thing' right there, but no meaning is lost by omitting 'exact' in that context.
:I'm not sure if it's strictly necessary, but I've also tried looking out for repetitive sentence structure, for example if several sentences begin with 'In [year], [thing happened]'. A variety of sentence structures keeps things from feeling samey.
:'''For tone,''' remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia. Ideally, our articles should only include facts that are notable within the topic.
:"[The house] became a shambolic shadow of its former glory."
:Here's a short quote from the revision of Milner Field ↗ prior to my copyedit attempt. The article was fun to read from a storytelling perspective, but storytelling is not Wikipedia's goal. Regardless of how agreeable or inoffensive the statement is, it's certainly not said from a neutral point of view, and it's not our place to make such claims, unless we may frame it in a way that uses verifiable facts.
:Also on the topic of tone, articles should sound formal, yet not overcomplicated. Good command of language is important for a few reasons. At the same time, our articles should be accessible. Fancy vocabulary can help sentences with conciseness and precision in meaning, but what's the point if only a percentage of people can understand in the first place? Similarly, if fancy phrases say the same thing with more words, there's nothing wrong with using less. Why waste time with lot word when few word do trick? ↗
:As for how I personally learned: I don't have a good answer, sorry! Best I can give you is that I have recent (though limited) experience writing articles for a student newspaper, and have been studying and editing Wikipedia maybe a little too much over the past few days, so I've learned a lot.
:I hope at least some of that is helpful to you! Hopefully my advice makes sense, but do take it with a grain of salt; I've actually only been a Wikipedia member for just over a week now so I'm quite the opposite of an expert. I'm very flattered you believe I'm doing a good job. I've been telling myself I could be doing everything wrong and that I'm causing yet-to-be-noticed issues somehow, so it's reassuring to hear!
:In case I've left you with more questions than answers, I have no doubt you're aware of some or all of these articles but I'll leave them here anyway for you to read or refer to as needed, since they'll cover the topics much more accurately and comprehensively than I have:
:- Wikipedia's Manual of Style ↗
:- Wikipedia's guide on basic copyediting ↗
:- Wikipedia's guide on improving your writing ↗
:- The core policies of article content ↗
:Perfectly happy to answer any further questions if you have any! Squitor (talk) 18:49, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
::Thank You! Oofgl (talk) 19:46, 14 April 2026 (UTC)

KEEP GOING KEEP GOING!!!

I see you working on ''Mario & Luigi ↗'', and I wanted to encourage you to see it through! I made a draft for it after I created ''Paper Mario ↗'' but got bored of it. I had plans to return to it later but it was ultimately moved to mainspace in an unfinished state by someone at some point. I suppose it was "good enough" but I recall there being entirely empty sections. I've just now noticed these overhauls in my watchlist, and was delighted its finally getting the love it deserved after I neglected it and left it on a doorstep of Wikipedia Mainspace with a note that said "I'm no father, please take care of her". Or something like that.

Series articles are tough. The most important advice I can give you is to make sure the article discusses the series ''as a whole''. Every game in the series has its own article, so ''this'' article specifically needs to tackle how all of these games come together. The gameplay should discuss what every game has in common and how it evolved over time; the development should explore ''how'' the franchise came to be, and the process of the development team (and people) behind it. Reception should express what people think of the series ''overall'', and compare the games against each other as to see what worked and what didn't.

See how ''Paper Mario'' has a bit of a tonal shift halfway through as the direction of the series changed, and it talks about ''why'' those decisions were made and how the audience (fans and critics) responded to it.

I haven't read it line-by-line yet, but I see it getting bigger and bigger = good in my book. If you motivates you any more, this article brings the project one step closer to a good topic of Mario role-playing games. Keep up the good work! Panini! • 🥪 06:28, 13 June 2026 (UTC)

:Hi, thank you for the encouragement! When I first came across the article, it was in a better position than you describe, but I was still surprised with how much it potential it still had. I suppose the games have always seemed to be the least discussed of the Mario RPGs, but they're so interesting and charming (to me at least) so it only felt right to bring it up to a better standard.
:I'm not quite sure whether you are implying the article specifically could use some reworking, or if you're just giving advice for the sake of advice (which is appreciated nonetheless), but if it's the former, then I agree. I'm fairly happy with where it is at the moment, especially as the first article I've properly tackled wholly, but when writing it I did struggle to – as you say yourself – really discuss the series altogether, rather than having it feel like a rehash and summary of the individual game articles, and I'm not entirely sure whether it achieves that yet honestly.
:At some point in the future, it would be nice to possibly overhaul some sections to feel more like a ''series'' article, though I fear that, between ADHD whims and Wikipedia inexperience, that might not be for a small while at least. Having said that, again, your encouragement is appreciated and is motivating. Your good work on ''Paper Mario ↗'' will prove a useful point of reference when I get around to it. In the meantime, I invite any further feedback, or even contributions of your own to the article, should you be up for it. It's always nice to get a pair of more experienced eyes on articles!
:Thanks for the link to the good topic as well, by the way. I was already aware of your excellent contributions to the Paper Mario topic ↗, but hadn't seen the full Mario RPG topic. I had lightly considered moving onto the other M&L RPG games after reaching GA on the series article, but perhaps Sparks of Hope ↗ could be interesting too. Thanks again for reaching out!
