Question about Washington streetcars

Do you know when the Belt Railway/A&PR obtained the right to run over the Eckington and Soldiers' Home Railway on G Street, between Fourth and Ninth Streets Northwest, in order to operate cars between LeDroit Park and the steamboat wharves via Fourth Street, G Street, E Street, Fourteenth Street, etc.? This was probably at the same time as the O/P Streets trackage was abandoned. --NE2 10:55, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Finding information about old streetcar lines, period, is rather difficult. Here's one description I've found, from http://books.google.com/books?id=Wx-vhuoO0zMC&q=%22ORIGINAL+LINES+OF+THE+ANACOSTIA+COMPANY%22&dq=%22ORIGINAL+LINES+OF+THE+ANACOSTIA+COMPANY%22&pgis=1 ↗:

C., at or near the corner of Nichols Avenue and Howard Avenue, thence in a northeasterly direction about two thousand (2000) feet on said Nichols Avenue; thence in the same direction on Monroe Street (the same being a continuation of said Nichols Avenue), to the south side of the Eastern Branch or Anacostia River at the Navy Yard Bridge; thence in a northwesterly direction across said bridge to Eleventh Street east; thence north on Eleventh Street east to G Street south; thence west on G Street south to Fourth Street east; thence north on Fourth Street east to E Street south; thence west on E Street south to Canal Street; along Canal Street to B Street south; thence on B Street south to Third Street west; thence north on Third Street west to Missouri Avenue; thence along Missouri Avenue to Sixth Street west; thence north on Sixth Street to B Street north; thence west on B Street to Ninth Street west; thence north on Ninth Street to G Street north; thence west on G Street to Eleventh Street west; thence south on Eleventh Street to E Street north; thence east on E Street to Ninth Street west.

(NOTE.—Of the foregoing route from the corner of Four-and-a-half Street and Missouri Avenue to Sixth Street, B Street, and Ninth Street to G Street, the Anacostia and Potomac River Railroad operates under the authority of an act of Congress over the tracks laid by the Metropolitan Railroad Company, and on G Street from Ninth to Eleventh Streets by the like authority over tracks laid by the City and Suburban Railway Company.)

Also on M Street south, beginning at the junction with Eleventh Street; thence due west to Water Street.

And all other lines of railway and franchises now owned by said Railroad Company, and all extensions it may hereafter acquire in connection with said lines of railway and franchises.

LINES OF THE BELT RAILWAY.

Also the lines acquired by the Belt Railway purchase, beginning for the same on First Street west, at the point of its intersection with Maryland Avenue in front of the Capitol, in Washington City, District of Columbia, and running thence north along said First Street and New Jersey Avenue to G Street north; thence west along G Street to Fourth Street west; thence north along said Fourth Street and said New Jersey Avenue to P Street north; thence west along said P Street to Eleventh Street west; thence south along the said Eleventh Street to E Street north; thence west along said E Street to Fourteenth Street west; thence south along said Fourteenth Street to B Street south; thence eastwardly along said B Street south, to Virginia Avenue southwest; thence eastwardly along the said Virginia Avenue to its intersection with Maryland Avenue, and thence eastwardly along said Maryland Avenue to First Street west, the place of beginning; also along O Street north, between Fourth Street and Eleventh Street west; also beginning at the intersection of Eleventh and Boundary Streets NW., and running thence south along said Eleventh Street to its intersection with the main line at P Street north; also beginning at the intersection of Eleventh and E Streets NW., and running thence east along said E Street to Ninth Street west; thence south along said Ninth Street, a right of way over and the use of the tracks of the Metropolitan Railway Company to Louisiana Avenue, and thence by its own tracks westwardly along said Louisiana Avenue to its intersection with the main lines at Twelfth Street west; thence south on Twelfth Street to B Street south, where it intersects the main line at Twelfth Street; also commencing at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Eleventh Street SW., and running thence south along said Eleventh Street to Water Street, and thence southeastwardly along said Water Street to Seventh Street west, and thence south along said Seventh Street to N Street south; also commencing at the intersection of Ohio Avenue and Fourteenth Street NW., and running thence south along said Fourteenth Street to B Street south. A tag has been placed on :Joe Magliolo ↗ requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion ↗, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Speedy deletion nomination of Ethel Kennedy Bridge

25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Hi, and thank you for your contributions ↗ to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give :Ethel Kennedy Bridge ↗ a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste ↗ move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history ↗, which is legally required for attribution ↗. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be ''moved'' to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits ↗, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab ↗ at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu ↗ for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect ↗ from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves ↗ to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge ↗. Speedy deletion ↗ nomination of :William Eugene Evans ↗

A tag has been placed on :William Eugene Evans ↗ requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion ↗, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement ↗. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://mermaidsandmermen.blogspot.ca/2010/10/dr-bills-obituary.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of ''information'', but not as a source of ''sentences''. This part is crucial: ''say it in your own words''. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators '''will be blocked from editing ↗'''.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you ''must'' verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials ↗. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission ↗ for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy ↗ for more details, or ask a question here ↗.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may '''contest the nomination''' by visiting the page ↗ and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Thanks for creating William Eugene Evans ↗, Volcycle!

Wikipedia editor Nick Moyes just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

<blockquote>Interesting article. Could be a good candidate for WP:DYK ↗ if you're interested. Can I suggest you don't create section heading simply called 'Biography'? The whole thing is a biography,so could be better subdivided. A few of your recent articles relating to NOAA tend to assume everyone knows American institution abbreviations, which they don't. So can I ask you to expand on organisation titles at first use, please? I also think your articles would benefit from more wikilinking to other subjects...they're a heck of a lot more interesting than most I have to read at WP:NPP ↗. Keep up the good work!</blockquote>

Oxon Creek

Footnote 3: The Evening Star (Washington D.C.) ↗ closed in 1981. Benjamin Trovato (talk) 09:25, 9 February 2019 (UTC)'

Thanks I accidentally put the date I saw it instead of the date of the article.Volcycle (talk) 15:59, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

2. The problem is that Creek has its historical definition of Creek (tidal) ↗ which confuses people who have only heard the usual definition. I would prefer two articles, Oxon Creek and Oxon Run, since they are clearly two different things. Googling Oxon Creek and Oxon Run is an excellent way to find how words are used. From the lat/long in footnote 1 and googleEarth, Barnaby Run can only be the creek on the north side of Eastover Shopping Center. Cutting off the last half mile of Oxon Run and adding it to the cove does not make sense. My best guess (I have no evidence) is that in 1892 the area was a marsh heading at Barnaby Run and that later the area was dredged out and filled in. Note that the land north of Eastover is still an inactive landfill. I do know that the Potomac shore was originally marshy and that most of it has been dredged and reshaped. Googling Winkle Doodle gives only Bridge Reports and its map shows that Winkle Doodle means Oxon Run. I could not find Oxon Creek in footnote 5. Benjamin Trovato (talk) 03:52, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

- I'm planning on writing a separate article for Oxon Run. Barnaby Run is the name of the stream that starts near the Bejamin Stoddart Middle School in Marlow Heights and flows west to the District and then south to the intersection of Galveston and Eastern. At that point it meets with Winkle Doodle Run. South of that, along Eastover, it sometimes called Barnaby and some times Winkle Doodle, but more often Winkle Doodle - not just by doing a google search but also in a search of newspaper articles, but there is obviously some confusion and it's hard to know who is "right". But DDOT repeatedly calls the bridge over it at South Capital the "Winkle Doodle Bridge" so that seems like a local authority. As for cutting off the last half mile of Oxon Run and calling it Oxon Creek- I'm relying on USGS.and an assortment of historic maps, as well as the trail along it which NPS calles the Oxon Creek Trail, but here again there is some confusion. I don't know what you mean by "Winkle Doodle means Oxon Run". Footnote 5 doesn't mention Oxon Creek - as it makes a few mistakes on names (calling Winkle Doodle "Glassmanor Run" for example). The point of footnote 5 is to show a place where Oxon Creek has been called Oxon Run. It's an example of the very confusion in plat Volcycle (talk) 05:37, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your contributions to Hal Fischer ↗. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because '''it needs more sources to establish notability'''.
I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Introduction to contentious topics

{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to ''' living or recently deceased subjects of biographical content on Wikipedia articles''', a topic designated as '''''contentious ↗'''''. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and <em>does <strong>not</strong> imply that there are any issues with your editing</em>.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee ↗. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators ↗ have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit <strong>carefully and constructively</strong>, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

<p>Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics <em>procedures</em>, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard ↗ or you may learn more about this contentious topic ↗. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{tl|Ctopics/aware}} template. </p>}}<!-- Derived from Template:Contentious topics/alert/first --> ''<b style="color:#ff0000;">Tar</b><b style="color:#ff7070;">nis</b><b style="color:#ffa0a0;">hed</b><b style="color:#420000;">Path</b>''<b style="color:#bd4004;"><u>talk</u></b> 23:14, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

Contentious topic alert

link=|25px|alt=Information icon ↗ You have recently made edits related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them. This is a standard message to inform you that gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them is a designated contentious topic. This message <em>does <strong>not</strong> imply that there are any issues with your editing</em>. For more information about the contentious topics system, please see Wikipedia:Contentious topics ↗. <!-- Derived from Template:Contentious topics/alert --> ''<b style="color:#ff0000;">Tar</b><b style="color:#ff7070;">nis</b><b style="color:#ffa0a0;">hed</b><b style="color:#420000;">Path</b>''<b style="color:#bd4004;"><u>talk</u></b> 23:17, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

:Volcycle, in your edits at Special:Diff/1346555150/1347443579 ↗, you added that Khelif has "a micropenis ↗ visible in an MRI" to Imane Khelif ↗. A couple of things here. Firstly the source doesn't state that and secondly the source is clearly fringe. Please take more care editing in BLP and GENSEX contentious topic areas. ''<b style="color:#ff0000;">Tar</b><b style="color:#ff7070;">nis</b><b style="color:#ffa0a0;">hed</b><b style="color:#420000;">Path</b>''<b style="color:#bd4004;"><u>talk</u></b> 23:24, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
::OK. I tried to be careful with this for obvious reasons. I did leave out the source that says the micropenis was found with an MRI, and I can add that. But I'm not sure what to do with "fringe". Is there a list of unacceptable or acceptable sources. The accusation is spread widely across the numerous sources and that fact that it is being reported seems important to the story of Khelif, her eligibility and her career. Volcycle (talk) 14:58, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
:::@Volcycle, the fact that it repeatedly refered to Khelif as "him" should have been a strong clue.
:::If ever in doubt about a source you can either consult WP:RSP ↗ (keeping in mind that not everything is there) or ask at WP:RS/N ↗. Ps, don't add that claim back without consensus from Talk:Imane Khelif ↗. 25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Hi Volcycle! I noticed that you've made several edits in order to restore a version of an article (Cameron Dicker ↗). The impulse to repeatedly undo an edit you disagree with is understandable, but I wanted to make sure that you're aware of Wikipedia's edit warring policy ↗. Repeatedly undoing the changes made by other users in a back-and-forth fashion like this is disallowed, even if you feel what you're doing is justifiable.

All editors are expected to discuss content disputes on article talk pages ↗ in order to try to reach a consensus ↗ with the other editors involved. If you are unable to come to an agreement, please use one of the dispute resolution options ↗ that are available in order to seek input from others. Using this approach instead of repeatedly reverting other editors' changes can help you avoid getting drawn into edit wars. Thank you.<!-- Template:uw-ewsoft --> <span style="color: blue">'''''~WikiOriginal-9~'''''</span> (<span style="color: blue">'''talk'''</span>) 17:08, 16 April 2026 (UTC)

:I did it once, and then a 2nd time because I didn't realize I'd already done it and had it reverted. I wouldn't call that "several". Volcycle (talk) 17:15, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
