Giant anteater ↗

Hello, I've reverted several edits you made to the article giant anteater ↗ last month, where you added new information without supporting references. Even if some information seems obvious to you (eg "keeping them sharp"), you need to provide sources to support that assertion while editing an article. The source that actually supported the sentence you modified (available here ↗) does not mention keeping claws sharp at all; it hypothesizes that knuckle-walking evolved as a way to keep the long claws out of the way while walking and make it easier to walk. Also, you linked Foraging in the heading; per MOS:HEADINGS ↗, headings should not include links. AryKun (talk) 09:10, 9 November 2023 (UTC)

Unattributed copying within Wikipedia

This edit of yours ↗ contains large amounts of unattributed text from other Wikipedia articles. These are copyright violations ↗. Please read carefully the Wikipedia guideline Copying within Wikipedia ↗, and remedy the situation on the affected articles by using their talk pages and/or by making dummy edits on the articles and using the edit comments. – Epipelagic (talk) 02:17, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

:I'll put the copy template on the destination page as well then Anthropophoca (talk) 02:34, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
::Ok i've seen your reversion in the Fish reproduction ↗ page and while i agree i did not discuss this change prior to implementing i used the Template:copy ↗, which is visible in the talk page and provides attribution data. Now that it is also present on both origin and destination pages it should provide enough of a continuity to the editing history Anthropophoca (talk) 02:40, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

::: Thank you — Epipelagic (talk) 01:56, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
::::I still believe that the entry on the fish reproduction page should be a shorter summary, as it did mostly discuss the habits of ceratioids. There's still a hidden comment from who knows when that considered the possibility of an article on sexual parasitism, which is one of the reasons why i created that section on Ceratioidei ↗. As that article discusses the subject matter (and now in more detail), i don't believe there is a need to keep the lengthy explanation on both articles, just one of them, especially when the other form of sexual parasitism, hybridogenesis, only got 5 sentences explaining the phenomenon. Anthropophoca (talk) 03:16, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

::: Feel free to rewrite the section for better balance – Epipelagic (talk) 05:51, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
::::Well if it were up to me i'd just revert to my edit and request Sexual parasitism ↗ to redirect into the section in Ceratioidei ↗ Anthropophoca (talk) 05:58, 9 March 2025 (UTC)

::::: I don't agree with that! Fish reproduction ↗ is an overview article whose purpose is to provide a balanced overview of the topic. Overview articles can provide convenient summaries and wider perpectives where focusing on constituant parts cannot. If your approach was followed, then the overview article would cease to be an overview article, and would merely beome a collection of links. Stripping it of content by moving content elsewhere without acknowledging where you took the content from (which by default means you are claiming the content as your own work) is particularly unconstructive. I'm not sure why you are persisting in what seems like an attack on the article. — Epipelagic (talk) 22:06, 10 March 2025 (UTC)
::::::I thought we'd agreed that using {{template:copied}} is an appropriate way of copying content over to other pages. I've added it to the talk pages of both articles.
::::::In my opinion, an overview article (especially one for the characteristics of an entire class) should summarize the subject matter and lead to a more detailed description on their relevant pages, e;g one such page i made: Resonating device ↗. They should not supplant taxon pages in discussing the specificities of their behavior/anatomy as that is relevant to the discussion as that is within the scope of those articles, unless you prefer order/family/genera pages to just comprise of a list of constituent clades, like ''Pecten ↗''. Taxonomy isn't an "entry-level subject" for zoology, so pages that exclusively deal with it aren't very friendly to laymen, so you'd need to expand it in some way.
::::::By the way, I proposed an overhaul of the Lophiiformes page ↗ and i would appreciate some responses before i start with it. Anthropophoca (talk) 02:57, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

Alicella gigantea stuff

Hello, I saw that you restructured Alicella gigantea. I mostly agree with your changes (and they are appreciated!), but I think there are some things that need to be changed so I thought I'd talk it over with you first. I think that the DNA sequences sentence, phylogeny figure and genome subsection both belong together under a unified genetics section as it previously was. To me, it looks pretty awkward that they are all split up from each other. I like the formatting changes you made to the phylogenetic tree (looks much tidier), but I'd like to flip it horizontally so the root is to the left (this is usually how phylogenetic trees are done in publications). Otherwise I think everything else is reasonable. I might create the gigantism section again later on if I can stitch together enough information on causes/mechanisms etc, but I think it's fine under description for the time being.

Are you planning to make more changes to the page? If so, we should coordinate as I plan to make many more edits (aiming to get this up to good article status).

AxonsArachnida (talk) 17:34, 22 May 2025 (UTC)

:I also appreciate your work on this page, and wish you luck on your efforts to improve the page to GA. I myself plan to improve the page on amphipod ↗s.
:I agree that it's awkward that the passages relating to genetics are split up, but we must remember that the formatting of pages is somewhat important, and the previous placement of the cladogram caused it to "fall through" to the reference list, which is not ideal. When media or templates do that, it's most often a sign that there's not enough text on the page, so i moved it up for visibility. I used the cladeRs for appearance's sake but i can make it right-facing again like it was, and remove the resizing code so it's a full size phylogeny. Seems like the examples of left-facing phylogenies were removed from wiki, so i can't use them for example, but it was related to the practice of selecting images which "face into the text", so to speak, which somewhat improves the appearance of articles.
:I'd certainly prefer if you kept the ordering that i set up (which is kind of the "standard" for taxon pages, like the GA page Bovidae ↗) but i won't stop you from experimenting with it, though i'd recommend consulting Wikipedia:Styletips ↗ when proceeding. One last thing is that phylogenies should have a root taxon, so you should include the family or whatever taxon it is that the phylogeny represents, if it is named.
:Happy editing, and good luck! Anthropophoca (talk) 06:04, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
::How about I bulk up the DNA sentence into a paragraph first, then merge all the genetics stuff into a single section? That way the phylogeny won't spill over into other sections. No need to revert the resizing of the phylogeny though, that's perfectly sized. I'm a bit biased since I've published phylogenies before, but it is exceptionally unusual to see them facing inwards like that. See ''Metrosideros bartletti ↗'' for example. I suppose at the end of the day, the reviewers for GA will have the final say.
::Also I'm organising to get some photos of live Alicella added to Wikicommons (just hashing out a few details with the creator of the images first). They might be useful for your work on the amphipoda page. Would you like me to notify you when they're available? AxonsArachnida (talk) 07:09, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
:::No need, i'll be able to find them myself if i need to. It's nice to have a non-student editor around these parts though Anthropophoca (talk) 07:33, 22 May 2025 (UTC)

Re: Candiru (fish)

Hey, You removed redirect to Vandellia cirrhosa ↗ and expanded Candiru (fish) ↗. I am not an expert on species but it's seems like both are same species as the section '''Alleged attacks on Human''' present in both article. If both are same than you should expand the Vandellia cirrhosa article. also your expansion didn't mention the scientific name of Candiru (your version).––kemel49(connect)(contri ↗) 14:07, 10 July 2025 (UTC)

:Please refer to V. cirrhosa's talkpage ↗; i've planned this out for a while. Thanks for the attention. Anthropophoca (talk) 14:10, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
::I don't see any discussion regarding ''Similar-name'' at Talk:Vandellia cirrhosa ↗.––kemel49<sup>(connect)(contri ↗)</sup> 14:13, 10 July 2025 (UTC)
:::I've updated the talkpage link as it has for some reason been archived improperly.
:::The split was based on multiple facts, such as the use of candiru as a common name for multiple species across two disparate families, and the dubious nature of the urethra-crawling thing. We (whatever's left of WikiProject Fish ↗) decided that the ''V. cirrhosa'' page should mainly discuss the actual biology of the fish, while the unconfirmable urethra-crawling was to be moved to the Candiru page, since it's mostly attached to the common name ↗ and the binomial was often given to legitimize the claim (it's suspicious that the type species of the type genus ↗ of Vandelliinae is the only one to do this attack. Similar to how every single domestic betta is ''Betta splendens ↗'' despite known hybridization events...) Anthropophoca (talk) 14:19, 10 July 2025 (UTC)

Fish Taxonomy

Hi Anthropophoca, I see you have been amending Cyprinidae and have put a note on it about outdated taxonomy. In October 2024 WP:Fishes ↗ agreed to use ''Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes ↗'' as the source for taxonomy of fishes on and below the level of Order. This means that the systematics section of this article should follow ECoF, other classifications should be discussed in the text. ECoF may have updated its classification of Cyprinidae since the list of subfamilies and genera was last updated, probaby by me, at the start of this year, but if that is not the case then the note you placed on that section should be removed.

Thank you for your interest in WP:Fishes and I hope you will make many more edits to articles covered by the project. Quetzal1964 (talk) 19:22, 20 September 2025 (UTC)

:Speaking of outdated Cyprinidae taxonomy, the Labeoninae ↗ still seems to largely be the version from a decade or more ago, so we need to get onto that. I wish they would just split ''Labeo''... Anthropophoca (talk) 00:00, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
::The list of genera is still based on ECoF and was updated in December 2024. What about the taxonomy is outdated? As I said above ECoF is the source used for the taxonomy of fishes at the level of order and below. ECoF is regularly updated, prior to using ECoF the project used the 5th Edition of ''Fishes of the World ↗'' which was published in 2016. Classifications used by other authors should be discussed in the text of the article, with the appropriate citations. Quetzal1964 (talk) 19:56, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
:::Either way i've removed the banner along with images of species that were split out and not discussed in the text. I believe those were the parts i had issue with.
:::ECoF does not have a more convenient catalog browser to peruse does it? I find it hard to link to a page that gives you just the valid names, which is unlike WoRMS. Anthropophoca (talk) 23:15, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
::::I undertsand that WoRMS follows FishBase for its fish taxonomy. Before we switched to ECof the project used FishBase for genus and species and FotW for taxonomic levels above genus. FishBase is based on ECoF, therefore, so is WoRMS but with a lag. ECoF is updated more quickly than FishBase. We know it's not perfect, for example it doesn't work for extinct, taxa but ECoF was agreed to be the most appropriate source for taxa at the level of order and below. Quetzal1964 (talk) 13:22, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
:::::Well i'm asking if there is something similar to WoRMS' lists, where you can type in a cladename and it retrieves a list of valid and synonymous names that you can then retrieve for Wiki. As i understand it EcoF only displays the giant block of text for every taxon and you can't get anything more concise than that. Anthropophoca (talk) 13:40, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
::::::You can certainly get lists of taxa at the genus and species leverl in ECoF. So if you serach by Genus and enter ''Salmo'' you get {{Cof genus|genus=Salmo|access-date=22 September 2025}}. Quetzal1964 (talk) 15:44, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
:::::::Well as i said, there's a giant block of text detailing the specific publication details, type locality, etc. You don't get a concise list of names, you use a lot of time trimming the "extraneous" information which isn't useful for a synonyms list Anthropophoca (talk) 15:55, 22 September 2025 (UTC)

Reliable sourcing for barbel fish on hippos

Hi, thanks for your intention to improve the Cleaner fish ↗ article, and sorry to have to revert you. However, the addition of doubtfully-sourced claims, combined with editorial reasoning, isn't the way. If there is actual science behind the claims, then we must locate and cite the research in the usual way. In any case, the supposed BBC source is inaccessible ("file not found"), so whatever it may have said, it's not verifiable. Given that there is doubt here, nothing but scientific sourcing will be sufficient. Hope this is all clear to you. Chiswick Chap (talk) 11:22, 28 March 2026 (UTC)

:It seems to be a common issue for media players; on the device that i edited on initially the video did load properly, which is how i was able to identify the featured fish.
