"Pumas" v "UNAM" as standalone

Hello, GoPurpleNGold24. You've been very active in Mexican football articles over the years so wanted to reach out about the "Pumas" v "UNAM" (as standalone) in articles, based on a recent change you made in 2026 FIFA World Cup squads ↗.

"'''Pumas'''" should be used over "'''UNAM'''" when referring to the team because we can make a case for WP:COMMONNAME ↗, as most sources refer to the team as "Pumas" instead of as "UNAM" as standalone. UNAM is most commonly used as the university abbreviation too so it's good to make that distinction. I brought this up in WP:FOOTBALL ↗ a few days ago but didn't get many responses. But wanted to share my rationale with you. Here's an example of what' I'm talking about. Check out all the sources that refer to the team as "Pumas" instead:

Hardly any sources refer to the team as "UNAM" ''over'' "Pumas" (same thing applies to "Tigres" versus "UANL"). I know we've used "UANL" and "UNAM" over Tigres and Pumas across Mexican football articles for years, but I've been making changes slowly under this rationale given the overwhelming amount of sources for it). ::Then we should call Guadalajara - Chivas, Toluca - Diablos Rojos, America - Aguilas, Monterrey - Rayados, Tijuana - Xolos, Necaxa - Rayos, Queretaro - Gallos Blancos, Juarez - Bravos. If you insist in adding "Pumas" and "Tigres", then it should at least be called "Pumas UNAM" and "Tigres UANL", that's how they're listed in multiple sites. :::I don’t think all apply. For Toluca FC, “Toluca” is more commonly used than “Diablos Rojos”, sources check out (happy to produce if needed). Same goes for América, hardly any source calls them Aguilas over America. Again, this is not about pushing nicknames or mascots for all, but some truly do apply, especially Pumas and Tigres when their abbreviations are literally separate institutions too.
:::CD Guadalajara is a tricky one because “Chivas” is more WP:COMMONNAME than “Guadalajara” as standalone. I’ve thought about opening up a discussion to see what people think about renaming CD Guadalajara to “Chivas de Guadalajara”, maybe a fight for another day.
:::Would you be in favor of “Pumas UNAM” (first mention in infobox, lead, and body paragraphs), followed by “Pumas” for all following mentions? Or “Pumas UNAM” for all?
