WikiCup 2021 March newsletter
Round 1 of the competition has finished; it was a high-scoring round with 21 contestants scoring more than 100 points. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 55 contestants qualifying. You will need to finish among the top thirty-two contestants in Round 2 if you are to qualify for Round 3. Our top scorers in Round 1 were:
- {{flagicon|New York (state)}} Epicgenius led the field with a featured article, nine good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 945 points.
- {{flagicon|Republic of Venice|wartime}} Bloom6132 was close behind with 896 points, largely gained from 71 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
- {{flagicon|Scotland}} ImaginesTigers, who has been editing Wikipedia for less than a year, was in third place with 711 points, much helped by bringing League of Legends ↗ to featured article status, exemplifying how bonus points can boost a contestant's score.
- {{flagicon|Rwanda}} Amakuru came next with 708 points, Kigali ↗ being another featured article that scored maximum bonus points.
- 22px ↗ Ktin, new to the WikiCup, was in fifth place with 523 points, garnered from 15 DYKs and 34 "In the news" items.
- {{flagicon|Botswana}} The Rambling Man scored 511 points, many from featured article candidate reviews and from football related DYKs.
- 22px ↗ Gog the Mild, last year's runner-up, came next with 498 points, from a featured article and numerous featured article candidate reviews.
- 22px ↗ Hog Farm, at 452, scored for a featured article, four good articles and a number of reviews.
- {{flagicon|United States}} Le Panini, another newcomer to the WikiCup, scored 438 for a featured article and three good articles.
- {{flagicon|England}} Lee Vilenski, last year's champion, scored 332 points, from a featured article and various other sport-related topics.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. In Round 1, contestants achieved eight featured articles, three featured lists and one featured picture, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. They completed 97 good article reviews, nearly double the 52 good articles they claimed. Contestants also claimed for 135 featured article and featured list candidate reviews. There is no longer a requirement to mention your WikiCup participation when undertaking these reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article candidate, a featured process, or something else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews ↗.
If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Flag-counting etc.
Hi there. As per earlier comments and discussions, there is no consensus to include these, and you recently failed to gain any support for them at WT:GOLF. Please stop adding them without establishing a change of consensus. Thanks. <span style="color:#0D5218">wjemather</span><span style="color:#520D0D">please leave a message...</span> 15:08, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
:Please take heed of my previous message. In addition, I'm not really sure what these dummy edits ↗ are about: diff ↗, diff ↗, but please do not do them again. I can only hope they are not a misguided attempt to hide your re-addition of these tables, but the timing would suggest otherwise. Thankyou. <span style="color:#0D5218">wjemather</span><span style="color:#520D0D">please leave a message...</span> 13:06, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
Start trying to develop a new "consensus" Johnsmith, otherwise wjemather will always get his way. Jeff5768 (talk) 23:26, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
The next step?
It would be better for everyone if you accepted the established consensus, but should you persist with making these disruptive additions, unfortunately it will be necessary to request a topic ban at the admin noticeboard. Please consider this very carefully. <span style="color:#0D5218">wjemather</span><span style="color:#520D0D">please leave a message...</span> 20:30, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

''The replies below were moved from User talk:Wjemather'':
::I had hidden the flags so that they did not show on the page. I left a note there saying that if anyone wanted to see it, they could unhide it. Therefore, it is not disruptive. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:36, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
:::It is not a valid use of hidden text ↗ since there is consensus against your flag-counting tables. Persisting with inserting them into articles (hidden or otherwise) is therefore disruptive. Some might view your edits in this regard as gaming the system ↗ and not being here to build an encyclopedia ↗. Please be mindful and stop this now. Copying within Wikipedia
Hi. I posted about this on WT:GOLF a while ago, but when making edits such as this ↗ (or creating articles by copying from another article), proper attribution is required. This can simply be done by stating where it has been copied from in your edit summary. Please see WP:CWW ↗ for full details. WikiCup 2021 May newsletter
The second round of the 2021 WikiCup has now finished; it was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 61 points to advance to Round 3. There were some impressive efforts in the round, with the top eight contestants all scoring more than 400 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 110 good articles achieved in total by contestants, as well as the 216 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.
Our top scorers in Round 2 were:
- {{flagicon|BWA}} The Rambling Man, with 2963 points from three featured articles, 20 featured article reviews, 37 good articles, 73 good article reviews, as well as 22 DYKs.
- {{flagicon|New York (state)}} Epicgenius, with 1718 points from one featured article, 29 good articles, 16 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
- {{flagicon|Republic of Venice|wartime}} Bloom6132, with 990 points from 13 DYKs and 64 "In the news" items, mostly recent deaths.
- 22px ↗ Hog Farm, with 834 points from two featured articles, five good articles, 14 featured article reviews and 15 good article reviews.
- 22px|England ↗ Gog the Mild, with 524 points from two featured articles and four featured article reviews.
- {{flagicon|ENG}} Lee Vilenski, with 501 points from one featured article, three good articles, six featured article reviews and 25 good article reviews.
- 22px ↗ Sammi Brie, with 485 points from four good articles, eight good article reviews and 27 DYKs, on US radio and television stations.
- 22px ↗ Ktin, with 436 points from four good articles, seven DYKs and 11 "In the news" items.
Please remember that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of Round 2 but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in Round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (except for at the end of each round, when you must claim them before the cut-off date/time). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗ (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). <!-- If having your way is so important to you, then I will let you have it, as petty as it is. Some people in this world want to be constructive and add, and some people want to be destructive and take away. If taking away and being destructive in this website is so vitally important to you, then be my guest. Most people have more important things to do. But keep in mind, the time of day reached nearly 9:00 PM before anyone decided to do something with that edit of mine, and naturally you were the one. No one else had a problem with it. .... You did not stand to gain anything by leaving a message on my talk page, nor did I. You did it strictly out of self indulgence. But as I say, if being destructive is the one thing in this world that gets you off, then you go ahead and have it. My life isn't going to come to an end because of an edit of mine being undone. -->

WikiCup 2021 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished with over 500 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants, {{flagicon|BWA}} The Rambling Man and {{flagicon|New York (state)}} Epicgenius, each scoring over 3000 points, and six contestants scoring over 1000. All but one of the finalists achieved one or more FAs during the round, the exception being {{flagicon|Republic of Venice|wartime}} Bloom6132 who demonstrated that 61 "in the news" items produces an impressive number of points. Other contestants who made it to the final are 22px ↗ Gog the Mild, {{flagicon|ENG}} Lee Vilenski, 20px|Zulu (International Code of Signals) ↗ BennyOnTheLoose, {{flagicon|Rwanda}} Amakuru and 22px ↗ Hog Farm. However, all their points are now swept away and everyone starts afresh in the final round.
Round 4 saw the achievement of 18 featured articles and 157 good articles. 22px|George Floyd mural ↗ Bilorv scored for a 25-article good topic on Black Mirror ↗ but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the final round. There was enthusiasm for FARs, with 89 being performed, and there were 63 GARs and around 100 DYKs during the round. As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it to the final round; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Hello {{BASEPAGENAME}},
Please join ''this discussion'' ↗ - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled ↗. Even our review systems themselves at AfC ↗ and NPR ↗ have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations ↗ are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection '''here''' ↗.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently '''706''' New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here ↗.

You are invited to '''sign up to participate ↗'''; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2022 competition. Predicting the future
Please stop entering your predictions into articles in breach of WP:CRYSTAL ↗. :When I entered the winner, I was thinking the tournament was over. I did not know there were more players, I was spilt between watching the golf and the Olympics. By the time I realized there were more players, I had already entered the winner, so I left it there because I had already entered it. Since the entry ended up being correct, there was no reason to change it. And anyway, if anyone had wanted to turn it back, they could have. I was not trying to do a prediction, I thought the tournament was over as my attention was split with watching the Olympics. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 04:28, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
::Your explanation does not correlate with your edit history. You also predicted the runner-up, scores and margins at a time when Hossler could still have forced a playoff or finished solo-2nd. A little while later, you changed your prediction to add Hossler as joint runner-up; he ultimately finished 3rd. <span style="color:#0D5218">wjemather</span><span style="color:#520D0D">please leave a message...</span> 11:53, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 March newsletter
And so ends the first round of the WikiCup ↗. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:
- {{flagicon|New York (state)}} Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
- {{flagicon|Christmas Island}} AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
- {{flagicon|Kingdom of Scotland|old}} Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
- {{flagicon|Philadelphia}} GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
- {{flagicon|United Nations}} Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
- 23px|link=Flag of Provo, Utah ↗ SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
- {{flagicon|United Nations}} Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.
These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗.

WikiCup 2022 May newsletter
The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.
Our top scorers in round 2 were:
#{{flagicon|New York (state)}} Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
#{{flagicon|Christmas Island}} AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
#{{flagicon|Kingdom of Scotland|old}} Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
#23px ↗ Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
#20px|link=SPQR ↗ Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
#{{flagicon|United States of America}} Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
#{{flagicon|ENG}} Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.
The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed ↗ (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). right|70px ↗thumb|400px|New Page Review queue March 2022 ↗
Hello {{BASEPAGENAME}},
At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.
Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page ↗, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.
In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers ↗ have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently {{NUMBEROFNEWPAGEPATROLLERS}} ↗ New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All {{NUMBEROFADMINS:R}} administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.
This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.
If you have noticed a user with a ''good'' understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{tq|<nowiki>{{subst:NPR invite}}</nowiki>}} on their talk page.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

right|70px ↗thumb|500px|New Page Review queue June 2022 ↗
Hello {{BASEPAGENAME}},
;Backlog status
At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion ↗ on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000{{efn|not including another ~6,000 redirects}} at the end of May.
Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.{{efn|The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.}}
In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers ↗ have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).
While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).
;Backlog drive
A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here ↗. 25px ↗ Barnstars will be awarded.
;TIP – New school articles
Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG ↗ has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.
;Misc
There is a new template available, {{txl|NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:
:{{NPP backlog}}
There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP ↗ recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

WikiCup 2022 July newsletter
The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
- 20px|Zulu (International Code of Signals) ↗ BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
- {{flagicon|Kingdom of Scotland|old}} Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
- 22px ↗ Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.
Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. thumb|400px|New Page Review queue August 2022 ↗
Hello {{BASEPAGENAME}},
;Backlog status
After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators {{u|Buidhe}} and {{u|Zippybonzo}}, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to {{u|Dr vulpes}} who led with 880 points. See this page ↗ for further details.
Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the '''other 600 reviewers''' to do more! Please try to do at least '''one a day'''.
;Coordination: {{u|MB}} and {{u|Novem Linguae}} have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. {{u|MPGuy2824}} will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
;Open letter to the WMF: The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements ↗). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here ↗. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
;TIP - Reviewing by subject: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
right|70px ↗
;New reviewers: The NPP School ↗ is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial ↗ exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page '''here''' ↗.

Hello Johnsmith2116:
'''WikiProject Articles for creation ↗''' is holding a '''month long Backlog Drive ↗!'''<br />
The goal of this drive is to '''reduce''' the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.
You may find :Category:AfC pending submissions by age ↗ or other categories and sorting ↗ helpful.
Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.<br />
There is a backlog of over {{Rounddown|{{formatnum:{{PAGESINCATEGORY:Pending AfC submissions}}|R}}|-2}} pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)</div>

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.
Our current leader is newcomer {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Generalissima}}, who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) ↗ and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|AirshipJungleman29}}, with one FA on Hö'elün ↗, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, and two DYKs;
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Vami IV}}, with one FA on Doom (2016 video game) ↗, one GA on Boundary Fire (2017) ↗, and 11 reviews;
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|MaranoFan}}, with one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song) ↗, a nine-article FT on 30 (album) ↗, and two DYKs;
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Skyshifter}}, with one FA on OneShot ↗ and one DYK;
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Sammi Brie}}, with five GAs and five DYKs on television and radio stations;
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|voorts}} and {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Elli}}, both with one FA and one DYK each.
As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews ↗. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗ and the judges ({{User|Cwmhiraeth}}, {{User|Epicgenius}}, and {{User|Frostly}}) are reachable on their talk pages. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter
The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.
The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Generalissima}}, who has 916 points mostly from one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) ↗, 15 GAs, and 16 DYKs on a variety of topics including New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures, in addition to seven reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Vami IV}}, who has 790 points from two FAs on Felix M. Warburg House ↗ and Doom (2016 video game) ↗, two GAs, one DYK, and 11 reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|AirshipJungleman29}}, who has 580 points from one FA on Hö'elün ↗, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, two DYKs, and five reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Sammi Brie}}, who has 420 points mostly from nine GAs and seven DYKs on television and radio stations
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|MaranoFan}}, who has 351 points from one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song) ↗, a nine-article FT on 30 (album) ↗, and three DYKs
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Skyshifter}}, who has 345 points from one FA on OneShot ↗, one DYK and two reviews
In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant15|Vami IV}}, who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class ↗ articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Award ↗s. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.
Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. '''Backlog update:''' The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to {{no ping|Schminnte}}, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to {{no ping|JTtheOG}}, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion ↗.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

{{no ping|Onel5969}} won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. '''Recruitment:''' A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. '''Reviewing tip:''' Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser ↗ tool.

Invitation to participate in a research
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this '''anonymous survey ↗'''.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page ↗ and view its privacy statement ↗ .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
WMF Research Team ↗

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found '''here ↗'''. If you have not yet signed up, you can '''add your name here ↗''' and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page ↗.
For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes ↗ to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: {{User4|Cwmhiraeth}}, {{User4|Epicgenius}}, {{User4|Frostly}}, {{User4|Guerillero}} and {{User4|Lee Vilenski}}. WikiCup 2025 March newsletter
The first round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 26 February. As a reminder, we are no longer disqualifying the lowest-scoring contestants; everyone who competed in round 1 will advance to round 2 unless they have withdrawn or been banned from Wikipedia. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round. Unlike the round points in the main WikiCup table ↗, which are reset at the end of each round, tournament points are carried over between rounds and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers. This table ↗ shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far.
Round 1 was very competitive compared with previous years; two contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and the top 16 contestants all scored more than 500 round points. The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Gog the Mild}} with 1,168 round points, mainly from 4 featured articles ↗ and 4 good articles ↗ on old military history, in addition to an assortment of GA and FA reviews.
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Generalissima}} with 1,095 round points, mainly from 2 FAs, 2 featured lists ↗, 8 GAs, and 16 Did You Know ↗ articles mainly on historical topics.
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|BeanieFan11}}, with 866 round points from 20 GAs, 23 DYKs, and 2 In the News ↗ articles primarily about athletes.
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Sammi Brie}}, with 846 round points from 16 GAs about radio and TV stations, 45 GA reviews, and 3 DYKs.
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Hey man im josh}}, with 816 round points from 5 FLs about sports and Olympic topics, 46 FL reviews, 3 ITN articles, and a large number of bonus points.
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|MaranoFan}}, with 815 round points primarily from 3 FAs and 1 GA about music, in addition to 9 article reviews.
The full scores for round 1 can be seen here ↗. During this round, contestants have claimed 18 featured articles, 26 featured lists, 1 featured-topic article, 197 good articles, 38 good-topic articles and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 23 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 550 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 26 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2, which begins on 1 March. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. WikiCup 2025 May newsletter
The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table ↗ shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.
Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|BeanieFan11}} with 1,233 round points from 24 good articles ↗, 28 Did you know ↗ articles, and one In the news ↗ nomination, mainly about athletes and politicians
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Thebiguglyalien}} with 1,127 round points, almost entirely from two high-multiplier featured articles ↗ on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) ↗ and Grace Coolidge ↗, in addition to two GAs and two reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|History6042}} with 1,088 round points from four featured lists ↗ about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic ↗ mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Gog the Mild}} with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Arconning}} with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews
In addition, we would like to recognize {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Generalissima}} for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.
The full scores for round 2 can be seen here ↗. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. Welcome to the 2026 WikiCup!
Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2026 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found '''here ↗'''. If you have not yet signed up, you can '''add your name here ↗''', and a bot will set up your submissions page within one day, ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page ↗.
For the 2026 WikiCup, the highest-ranking contestants will receive tournament points ↗ at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. This is the same scoring system that we had last year. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants are no longer eliminated at the end of each round.
The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: {{User4|Cwmhiraeth}}, {{User4|Epicgenius}}, {{User4|Frostly}}, {{User4|Guerillero}} and {{User4|Lee Vilenski}}. WikiCup 2026 March newsletter
The first round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 26 February. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup ↗, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. '''Backlog update'''
At the time of this message, there are 15,282 articles and 32,951 redirects awaiting review.
After the January–February drive the article backlog was reduced to 15,179 articles and the redirect backlog to 19,053 respectively. Great job! However, both queues are growing rapidly and any additional reviews are highly appreciated.
'''2024 and 2025 NPP Awards'''
74px|left ↗{{no ping|JTtheOG}} was selected as the NPP reviewer of the year for both 2024 and 2025, for reviewing the most articles amongst all reviewers.
{{no ping|Hey man im josh}} and {{no ping|MPGuy2824}} won the Redirect Ninja Master Award for 2024 and 2025 respectively, for reviewing the most redirects.
Overall in 2024, one Platinum, two Gold, eight Silver, 12 Bronze and 45 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 66 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year. In 2025, one Platinum, ten Silver, 13 Bronze and 38 Iron Barnstars were awarded. Additionally, 38 reviewers got the NPP barnstar for doing more than 100 reviews through the year.
{{no ping|BoyTheKingCanDance}}, {{no ping|Rosiestep}}, {{no ping|SunDawn}}, and {{no ping|Vanderwaalforces}} were inducted into the NPP Hall of Fame ↗ for having two separate years of 2,000+ article reviews.
'''January–February backlog drive'''
The experimental two-month long backlog drive concluded with 183 reviewers patrolling over 27,761 articles and 35,309 redirects, earning over 36,836 points. Congratulations to {{no ping|JTtheOG}}, who achieved first place with 6,484.6 points in this drive.
'''May backlog drive'''
An article-only backlog drive is currently underway. We are hoping to make a big dent in the backlog. You can read more about it or join at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Backlog drives/May 2026 ↗.
'''PageTriage'''
An attempt was made to get the New Pages Feed ↗ to sort by date marked as reviewed instead of date created. However we had to revert it due to bugs. We may try again in the future. You can subscribe to the Phabricator ticket ↗ if you're interested in following along.

WikiCup 2026 July newsletter
The third round of the 2026 WikiCup ended on 28 June at 23:59 (UTC). As a reminder, good article nomination reviews ↗ now receive 10 points, while peer reviews ↗, which continue to be worth 5 points, are now listed in the same section as featured article candidate reviews ↗, rather than with good article reviews. Everyone who competed in round 3 will advance to round 4 unless they have withdrawn or been banned. No other changes to the round-point system have been made for this year.
Round 3 was competitive. Three contestants scored more than 1,000 round points; eight scored over 500; and thirteen scored over 300. The top three contestants had at least one featured article ↗ (two of them with two apiece). The following competitors scored more than 800 round points:
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant17|MCE89}} with 1567 points, mainly from good and featured articles about Australian people and geography, as well as some article reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant17|Bgsu98}} with 1547 points, mainly from good articles, featured articles, featured lists, and a good topic about figure skating, along with 20 article reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant17|Reconrabbit}} with 1004 points, mainly from a high-multiplier featured article on European rabbit ↗ and several good articles, DYKs, and reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant17|A.Cython}} with 1004 points, mainly from good articles about warfare, along with 22 article reviews
- {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant17|Generalissima}} with 859 points, mainly from good and featured articles about rivers and East Asian topics
The full scores for round 3 can be seen here ↗. During this round, contestants have claimed 12 featured articles, 12 featured lists, 7 featured-topic articles, 117 good articles, 74 good-topic articles and more than 30 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 13 In the News ↗ articles, and they have conducted nearly 180 reviews. The tournament points table ↗ has been updated.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed in Round 4. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points.
