Help - what to do about promotional article?

{{Help me-helped}}
I was searching through random articles yesterday and came across Timothy Leighton β†—. It reads to me like a resume (overly promotional) and it appears that my concerns are shared by two other editors β†— in 2019.

Here is a particularly egregious excerpt:

{{tq|When he took it to the Cheltenham Science Festival, '''its impact in children was so great''' that one woman (after playing the game) realised that it was the reason why all morning the toilets had been filled with children singing 'Happy Birthday' because one of the lessons from the game was to wash your hands for as long as it took to sing that song twice.}}

This is sourced to a 12 second youtube clip uploaded by Timothy Leighton himself, with the description reading eerily similar:

{{tq|... as she finishes playing the game, a woman suddenly realises why all morning the children in the toilets were singing 'Happy Birthday' as they washed their hands.}}

More:

{{tq|With other teams he developed methods to assess which fish species are most at-risk from man-made noise in the oceans, and quantified such noise from shipping. '''Turning the problem on its head''', he worked with other teams on how to use sound as 'underwater acoustic scarecrows' to guide fish away from regions of man-made danger.}}

I'm not well versed in AfD or in BLP; I don't know whether this is just how articles about well-published researchers are written...

Is this article overly promotional? Is that a reason for deletion? <span style="color:#3b3b3b">'''JordyGrey'''</span> <span style="color:#3b3b3b">talk</span>🧸 β†— 02:35, 9 May 2026 (UTC)
:The short answer to your question is that no, we do not accept that sort of thing. Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, ''':Alan Lloyd bibliography β†—'''. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – ''':Alan Lloyd β†—'''. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion β†—. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at :Alan Lloyd β†—. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page β†—.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may '''contest the nomination''' by visiting the page β†— and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines β†—. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the {{Querylink|Special:Log|qs=type=delete&page=Alan+Lloyd+bibliography|deleting administrator}}, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here β†—. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process β†— and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions.

Orange sticker (talk) 15:46, 22 May 2026 (UTC)

:Hi Orange sticker! Looks like the AfD tag was removed anyway, so I don't have to do anything? But I thought I'd just quickly explain myself, and also ask a question.
:Firstly, in the past month, I have drastically expanded the Alan Lloyd page, including adding a list of works. However, this list was incomplete and contained incorrect information, and so I have spent the last ~9 days compiling an even larger list. That is what you now see in the Alan Lloyd bibliography article. If I were to add the content into the Alan Lloyd page, I believe it would be disproportionately large when compared to the rest of the page. Unfortunately, I was in the middle of WP:SPLITTING β†— last night, but I ws unable to finish before going to bed. I was/am going to replace the current list in the Alan Lloyd page with a much smaller summary, so that it doesn't take up such an enormous amount of space.
:Secondly, could you elaborate on your removal β†— of Douglas Leatherland's quote? I read through WP:PEACOCK β†— but I'm still not clear on how that quote fails those guidelines? It was a direct quote from someone, rather than a baseless statement, and more importantly, a "surge" especially in the way it is described in the paper, is not necessarily a positive thing?
:{{tq|William Horwood, A.R. Lloyd, Brian Jacques, Robin Jarvis and Kathryn Lasky are among the many authors who have written such works, all of them series. I would argue that this surge may have prompted writers like Needle and Lovett Jones to return to The Wind in the Willows as the β€˜model’ story.}}
:I think it carries a connotation of saturation within the anthropomorphic fiction genre i.e. negative? I'm also not sure how it is selective quoting, when I believe that the "surge" he talks about in sentence 2 is the list of authors from sentence 1, meaning "Alan Lloyd (or a.r. lloyd) was part of a ... 'surge'" '''is''' in fact what douglas is saying?
:Could you explain? Thank you :) <span style="color:#3b3b3b">'''JordyGrey'''</span> <span style="color:#3b3b3b">talk</span>🧸 β†— 23:36, 22 May 2026 (UTC)
::Firstly the quote (more of a misquote in actuality) I removed, I found it to be WP:UNDUE β†— bordering on WP:SYNTH β†—, in that it seemed to be inflating a very brief passing mention of Lloyd in a list of other authors to a more thorough review of his work.
::The speedy deletion request was turned down by an admin but they suggested redirect to Alan Lloyd#Works β†— (merge doesn't seem necessary as there is already a bibliography in that article) which is something I'm inclined to follow up as the bibliography relies on a single source. Per WP:NLIST β†— it should be {{tq|discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources}}. The answer to avoiding the Alan Lloyd β†— article from becoming too big is to only include the most important works - WP:INDISCRIMINATE β†—.
::I see you've been working on The Kine Saga β†— which is another article I was considering nomination for deletion on notability grounds. It still needs more independent, third party references from reliable sources to show it meets WP:NBOOK β†—. Hope this helps. Orange sticker (talk) 09:57, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
:::Firstly:
:::Reading through WP:UNDUE β†— I can see why you removed it. {{small|({{tq|then it should be easy to substantiate it with references to commonly accepted reference texts}})}} That makes more sense than PEACOCK as a removal reason, and I'm happy to leave that out.
:::I can't understand what you're trying to say in the middle paragraph. What you mean by "a merge doesn't seem necessary"? I'm aware that the Alan Lloyd β†— page currently contains a bibliography, but even before I shortened it to a "summary" here β†—, {{small|and sorry if you're already aware of this, but}} the list was completely different β†— from the one currently in the Alan Lloyd bibliography β†— article. I don't know how to do the fancy inline "diff" thing to show the differences between the two versions of the list, sorry...
:::I couldn't figure out how to cohesively structure the next three paragraphs, so bear with me:
:::And {{tq|the bibliography relies on a single source}}, what does that mean?? Can't the references speak for themselves? I spent over a week researching databases including WorldCat, OpenLibrary, LibraryThing, Internet Archive, as well as Goodreads Amazon Biblio Karlsruhe Bookwire etc. to compile the most complete list I possibly could of every edition of Alan Lloyd's books provided they had at least a title, date, location, publisher, isbn etc etc. All of the books that I have included can be verified within 2 or 3 clicks: just view the ISBN or OCLC and there you have it...
:::I can't understand how it could be considered indiscriminate{{emdash}}the discriminating factor is whether it was a book written by Alan Lloyd? Why should the article NOT include all of his works? What do we gain by leaving them out?
:::And besides that, I know with absolute certainty of 4{{endash}}5 different bibliographies that I could add that are accessible through the internet archive. I just haven't done that specific thing yet...
:::To sum up:
:::The issue is that there is just so much to do, and I have been working basically all day every day for the last month to add as much relevant information{{emdash}}and as many sources{{emdash}}as I possibly can and will continue to do so as I locate more sources and shift my focus from one article to the next. Like I know I just said it, but I really need more time to continue improving them. It's not as if I've abandoned any of the articles for months, or there are no more references left to add? So surely there's no need to redirect or merge anything for the foreseeable future???
:::I don't really know how the bureaucratic side of Wikipedia works, but it would really make my life a lot less stressful if you could try to obtain some kind of consensus {{small|or maybe just an extra opinion?}} before doing any kind of merge/deletion/redirect so that I'm not freaking out every night when I go to bed that in the morning I'll wake up to find a month's worth of hard work disappear...
:::In fact the reason this reads like a deranged rant is because it pretty much is, sorry :( I'm really freaking out over this, I've worked so hard to expand these pages but I think honestly this is all too stressful for me. I might just go back to looking for spelling mistakes or vandalism. I don't want this to read as a threat or some kind of guilt tripping, I just wanted to vent my emotions :( <span style="color:#3b3b3b">'''JordyGrey'''</span> <span style="color:#3b3b3b">talk</span>🧸 β†— 10:52, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
::::{{tq| it would really make my life a lot less stressful if you could try to obtain some kind of consensus or maybe just an extra opinion?}} trust me, if any of these articles go to WP:AFD β†— I doubt it would be less stressful for you as you would likely find yourself arguing on several fronts at once. I put off nominating the Kine Saga there as someone had only just placed flagshttps://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Kine_Saga&diff=prev&oldid=1355732760 β†— to say that the article needed better sourcing and so I tend to give editors a chance to take that on board. To avoid your articles getting flagged for speedy deletion or deletion via consensus make yourself really familiar with the WP:GNG β†— guidelines, in particular WP:NBOOK β†— and WP:NAUTHOR β†— and priortise showing that the subjects of your articles are notable topics that have been discussed significantly β†— in multiple independent, reliable sources.
