“homosexual woman”

On the Lesbian article.
This is like adding sources to back up the claim that Earth is a planet orbiting the sun. Totally absurd. Have you noticed how ridiculous this is?2A00:23C4:3E08:4000:9815:C54D:4E99:FBA ↗ (talk) 23:52, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

:Um. Isn't today's definition of lesbians: "non-men attracted to non-men"? Y'know ... like ... everything is defined by ''men'' — with or without them. symbol name

Hi. The names of files are irrelevant. They can just be strings of digits, since the reader won't see them. But the double Venus is the symbol of the asteroid Sappho. I could move it to a different name if you like, but it's really irrelevant for WP.

I mean, if you ''like'' the other file better, that's one thing. But the file name doesn't matter. — kwami (talk) 10:39, 19 July 2022 (UTC)

:Since the article is about '''lesbian''' (not astronomy) and in cited sources the symbol is referred to as a double-Venus symbol ... it does not make sense to substitute the double-Venus file with a file related to astronomy. A common reader may well click on the symbol and wonder why the article is using a file about the 80 Sappho ↗ asteroid. <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak)</span>. :"{{tq|The names of files are irrelevant.}}" If that's the case, why did you switch one file with another that is almost identical? I didn't notice at first that you are the editor that created and uploaded :File:Sappho symbol (bold).svg ↗. Heavenly Creatures

Peter Jackson's film Heavenly Creatures has noticeable lesbian content with two girls played by Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey. However, I couldn't find appropriate references stating the two girls are lesbians. As similar incidents happen before, would you mind helping me find appropriate ones? I don't want to use other incorrect references unintentionally again and I would like the help of a more experienced Wiki user. Would you mind doing the honor of that? Runningman2027 (talk) 03:27, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
:{{u|Runningman2027}}: I've seen Heavenly Creatures. There is lesbianism, as the two girls are obsessed and infatuated with each other and it's implied that they have sex, but whether one of them (or both) is a "lesbian" is another story since the movie doesn't make a point of making it clear. It's all open to interpretation. This is the reason why there are no reviews that describe, with certainty, that one or both girls are lesbians. I'll do a little digging, but won't hold my breath that there will be a film review that verifies it. <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">Ol' homo.</span> 06:53, 12 April 2023 (UTC)
::I found this source that I'm not sure can be used as a reference. It's said all movies in the list has lesbianism, does that also apply to the characters?(<ref>{{cite web|last1=Jeunesse |first1=Marilyn La|title=41 Best Lesbian Movies to Watch Right Now |url=https://www.teenvogue.com/story/lesbian-movies-to-watch |website=Teen Vogue ↗ |date=March 10, 2023 |url-status=live}}</ref>) Can you please help me with that? Runningman2027 (talk) 04:07, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
:::{{u|Runningman2027}}: The article's introduction says "needed gap to fill when it comes to lesbian movies", "we want lesbian love stories", "lesbian characters being just as messy and chaotic", "even lesbian superheroes", "we found the best lesbian movies to watch", "or lesbian drama movies" ... BUT ... the description of Heavenly Creatures does not say that Juliet and Pauline, one or both, are lesbian. Females can have sex with each other and not be homosexual -- they can be bisexual. (And lord only knows! So many writers of these types of articles totally ignore that bisexuals do exist. It's as if they have a mental block and are wearing blinders.) Two females can also just be experimenting and conclude they prefer to be with males. <br /> I've tried to find a source (both published and video) where Peter Jackson confirms that the Juliet and Pauline depicted in his film were "lesbians", but haven't been able to. Juliet Hulme changed her name to Anne Perry, and became the famous crime novelist. In 2006, she said in an interview that she and Parker were never lesbians ↗. Pauline Parker changed her name to Hilary Nathan and lived her life out of the spotlight. <br /> We, editors, are not supposed to guess what an article is trying to say, or make conjectures about its content. Just because we have seen a movie, for example, and know for a fact that a character is lesbian based on what ''we'' have seen, we still have to dig up reliable sources that confirm it. The best article (or book) is always going to be one written by an author who has watched a film and concluded that a character (one or more) is a lesbian and doesn't hesitate to describe her as such. <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">Ol' homo.</span> 08:45, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

:::::Sometimes you just have to throw in the towel. This film is from 29 years ago. If there are no reliable published sources that say Character A is a lesbian, or Characters A and B are lesbians, or something like that, then we hit the bar and order a Tequila Sunrise (or whatever floats your boat). 25px ↗ <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">Ol' homo.</span> 10:04, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Can you explain:
# Why you mass reverted and restored ↗ a version of the article with incomplete date ranges, referencing maintenance errors, MOS:TVUPCOMING ↗ violations, and incorrect parameters?

So, again, episode tables comes directly after any lead and plot sections. So I ask: Which part of MOS:TV ↗ supports the inclusion of the episode tables at the end of the article?
# Concerning this ↗ edit, this actually violates MOS:TVPLOT ↗: {{tq|an article should not have both an episode table with summaries and a prose plot summary}}. If you'd like to claim that {{tq|Editors don't invent their own manuals of styles in Wikipedia}}, I would recommend taking exactly that on board.
I look forward to your replies. -- <span style="font-variant:small-caps;color:#02B">Alex_</span><span style="font-size:smaller;color:#02B">21</span>&nbsp;<span style="font-size:xx-small;color:#009">TALK</span> 07:43, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

newbie student editor

Hey, PS. The editor you reverted ↗ is a brand new editor, looks like a student contributing in fulfillment of class requirements. And they're using VisEd, which automatically places those stupid references; I'm sure that student has zero idea what you were even talking about in the edit summary. FWIW, there's a newish script you can use that will change those stupid VE refnames to something readable by humans, it's at User:Nardog/RefRenamer. Pings to {{u|ChrisBabits}}, {{u|Helaine (Wiki Ed)}}, {{u|Brianda (Wiki Ed)}}. Valereee (talk) 10:39, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
: Thanks. Every time an article on my watchlist gets assigned to students, I brace myself for the clean-up after elephants. The instructors are a total fail for not letting them know about the problems with using Visual editor; however, I doubt they care much since all student assignments are article drive-by shootings. <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">Ol' homo.</span> 10:49, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

:::PS, just ftr, also a new contributor. @ChrisBabits, the reason I pinged you was to make sure you discussed with your student. We do try to encourage experienced editors to be patient with new users, but for some who work in areas where students are often required to sort of jump right into the deep end (rather than starting like most new editors start, by fixing typos and finding citations), it can get a little frustrating. PS works in human sexuality, and a lot of the articles on her watch are likely of interest to students taking classes like yours. To her it may feel like she's constantly dealing with the same issues, while of course to your student, this is the first time for them. Valereee (talk) 16:38, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
:::"{{tq|Thanks for being a wonderful person!}}" – And that I am. It's why I have volunteered so much of my very valuable time to Wikipedia. Had I chosen academia as a career path, and chosen to make my living as an instructor, I would have done it knowing that I would be handling hundreds of students at any given courses — and I would have prepared myself for its demands. There'd be no point in moaning and groaning about it. <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">Ol' homo.</span> 06:06, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
::::Hi, thank you User:Valereee for your help here and for looping us in. {{ping|Pyxis Solitary}}, if you have an issue with student work in the future, please navigate to the course page where you can ping the Wiki Education staff helping with that particular class. Students in our program will have a box on their user page linking to a course page, which has the username of the Wiki Education staff supporting them. Staff can clean up any problematic content or offer feedback to students and instructors. You can also always post on WP:ENB ↗. We are the ones that advise students to use the VE since it's considerably easier as a new editor. If you have concerns with how VE handles references, please direct those to the relevant parties. All of the instructors who participate in our program do so because they genuinely care about public knowledge and want to make Wikipedia a better place. Thank you.Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:33, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
:::::Thanks for the tip. I'll try to remember it. Suggestions and word of advice: encourage instructors to inform their students about the pitfalls of Visual Editor ... about looking at how articles are structured before diving into them ... about Wikipedia policies and guidelines ... about getting feedback from experienced editors before making a major change to an established article. You want to encourage the participation from new editors, sure, but you don't want the editors you already have to stop giving a damn. Hi Pyxis Solitary. Like Jonesey95, I came to your user page because it was listed as one of the few pages having Bogus file options ↗. It's not listed there now, but it will be if you revert my edit. Like Jonesey95 and others, I routinely edit articles, talk pages, and user pages to quietly and harmlessly fix lint errors. Very few users complain and many users thank me. I believe Jonesey95's fixes were all correct and did not affect the display. I was a little more aggressive, fixing mismatched collapse, float, and column markup, which changed the way some of the sections collapse. Feel free to revert. I encourage you to accept Jonesey95's version though. Cheers! — Anomalocaris (talk) 06:17, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Patricia Highsmith

Hello there

I added a sources section on the Talk Page in order to make it clear which works were sources for the article and which ones are further reading; that is, not specifically referenced in the article. This makes it easier for casual readers to see the main critical works on Highsmith at a glance. It also allows for the reference system to be rationalised because the article currently uses several citation methods in a haphazard way. It is also perfectly consistent with MOS:STRUCTURE ↗. I explained this on the Talk page and I would be happy to discuss the issues I raised there.

Thanks Aemilius Adolphin (talk) 00:30, 10 October 2024 (UTC)
: And I explained in my summary that "References" is the section where cited sources appear, and "Further reading" is just that. As stated in MOS:STRUCTURE:
:* 3.3 "See also" section
:* 3.4 Notes and references
:* 3.5 Further reading
:* 3.6 External links
:The article does not need a specialized layout. <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">Ol' homo.</span> 01:15, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

Desperate Living

Given your pop cultural interests, I thought you might know a bit about this. The article for ''Desperate Living ↗'' states that "A brief controversy arose when lesbian groups attacked the film for its depiction of lesbianism, and for taking the title of a defunct lesbian magazine." I see no source for this, but there apparently was ↗ a magazine called ''Desperate Living''. I would create an article about the magazine, but I'm not finding much in the way of sources. Thank you. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 10:30, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
: I found these: Lesbian Herstory Archives ↗, U of Arkansas ↗, ''The Lesbian Reader'' (1975) ↗. <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">&#9890;</span> 08:10, 12 June 2025 (UTC)

25px|alt=Information icon ↗ Please do not attack ↗ other editors, as you did at :Talk:Lesbian ↗. Comment on ''content'', not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. :You don't know what a personal attack is. Since he directed his holier-than-thou at me (''There is nothing stopping you from adding any well-sourced content to History of Lesbianism as you see fit, instead of complaining here. CC WP:VOLUNTEERed to improve this article, not the other one.'' ↗) I held the mirror to his face and then told told him to "shut up". I didn't comment <u>about the contributor</u>. <br /> I didn't use or make ↗:
:* Abusive, defamatory, or derogatory phrases based on race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religious or political beliefs, disability, ethnicity, nationality, etc.
:* ...someone's affiliations as an ad hominem means of dismissing or discrediting their views
:* ...political affiliations as an ad hominem means of dismissing or discrediting their views
:* [link] to external attacks, harassment, or other material, for the purpose of attacking
:* Compar[e] editors to Nazis, terrorists, dictators, or other infamous people.
:* Accusations about personal behavior that lack evidence.
:* Threats.
This editor does not himself make the edits he's telling other editors are needed in an article, so he should not be telling me to add content to another article, "{{green|instead of complaining here}}". So you see, based on your interpretation of WP:PA ↗, his telling me to stop "complaining" can be taken as a confrontation and a personal attack directed at me. WP:PA is not a weapon to be used selectively against editors of your choosing. (In case it went over your head: telling an editor "{{green|instead of complaining}}" is a roundabout way of saying "stop talking" (i.e. shut up.) <span style="background-color: #eadff5; color: #6e02db;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#FF007C;">(yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus; color:black">&#9890;</span> 05:46, 13 January 2026 (UTC)

:Telling someone to "shut up" is not acceptable behavior on Wikipedia. It is very clearly focusing on the contributor, rather than the content (WP:FOC ↗). Katzrockso (talk) 06:27, 13 January 2026 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics

{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to '''gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them''', a topic designated as '''''contentious ↗'''''. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and <em>does <strong>not</strong> imply that there are any issues with your editing</em>.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as ''contentious topics''. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee ↗. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators ↗ have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit <strong>carefully and constructively</strong>, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

<p>Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics <em>procedures</em>, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard ↗ or you may learn more about this contentious topic ↗. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{tl|Ctopics/aware}} template. </p>}}<!-- Derived from Template:Contentious topics/alert/first --> Katzrockso (talk) 06:31, 13 January 2026 (UTC)

Best script ever – RefRenamer

Hi, Pyxis Solitary. I think you're going to love this script, maybe as much as I do: User:Nardog/RefRenamer. It semi-automatically converts VE numeric ref names to semantic names. ('Semi-', because you have to approve the changes in preview mode and then hit Publish; but all the ref name conversion work is already done for you.) There's a wee bit of a learning curve at the outset, as you face what looks like a pretty complex dialog box for the first time, but actually it's not as bad as all that because the script chooses good defaults for everything, so you can pretty much ignore the dialog box choices and leave all the dropdowns and input fields alone until you get more familiar with the script. When you are, you can always come back and start fiddling with the dials until you get the script to do exactly what you want. Highly recommended. I've been using it for a while, and I love it. I have used it in articles having over 500 citations, and never seen it mess up.

I either use it when I happen to land at a page with a bunch of VE numeric names that need fixing, or else I go on a tear and fix ten or twenty articles in a row. See Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Named references#How you can help ↗ for how to get a list of 50 articles that have VE numeric names that could use fixing. Running a series of them is the perfect improvement task that you can do when your brain is not working because the coffee isn't ready yet, and you need some task that is mindless, but useful. Let me know how you like it, and ping me if you have questions about it. Cheers, Mathglot (talk) 10:48, 2 February 2026 (UTC)
: Just did a run; see this diff ↗ at one article, for example. Pretty cool, eh? Mathglot (talk) 11:30, 2 February 2026 (UTC)

: Hot dang! What a useful tool. Thanks for letting me know about it. :-) <span style="background-color:#eadff5; color:#6A0DAD;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#AA381E;">(yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus;color:black">&#9890; – not queer.</span> 07:20, 3 February 2026 (UTC)
:: One tip: you don’t have to accept the name it proposes, you can overwrite in the table with a better one. I often do that with really long names, just turning it into an acronym, or when they use a long publisher name because the ref doesn’t include an author, then I sometimes look up the author (invariably shorter) so I can over type it and use the Last-YYYY format. As you get familiar with it, you'll find your own style and tricks. Can’t say enough good things about it. Mathglot (talk) 23:39, 3 February 2026 (UTC)

Jae Matthews in the List of female film and television directors

TBH it's long overdue that members of Boy Harsher get their own pages, including as film directors, but I'm sorry, "with sources specifically about her history as a film or TV director" is just factually incorrect. There's a passage on their film ''The Runner'' with not one but two sources attached. --Mykola Yeromin (talk) 20:47, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
: When someone is mentioned in an article or list, and they are still alive or recently deceased, '''WP:BLP ↗''' becomes involved. I read the ''Boston Globe'' source and it says "''a short horror film the Northampton electronic duo directed and produced....Matthews and Muller began...directing their own music videos''." I read the ''Document'' source and the only instance in which a reference about being a director appears is "''Kris: You’re always kind of scouting, because that’s where your mind’s always at—writing and directing''." These sources do not place any focus on Jae Matthews as a director. If I were you, I would create a section in the ''Boy Harsher ↗'' article for any film or videos they created, search for reliable sources that provide better information about Jae Matthews directing a film or video, and add it to the ''Boy Harsher'' article. If you don't want to create a section (even if it's brief) for Jae Matthews, I would consider creating a "Jae Matthews" title page that redirects to the ''Boy Harsher'' article. <span style="background-color:#eadff5; color:#6A0DAD;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#AA381E;">(yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus;color:black">&#9890; – not queer.</span> 10:57, 12 March 2026 (UTC)

"Girl with Hyacinths"

Hello!

Have you seen this film, or perhaps you never watch non-English language films? You see, I have. ''Girl with Hyacinths'' has by several sources been hailed as the first lesbian-themed Swedish film. Does this source convince you: https://the-avocado.org/2022/01/10/lgbt-movies-girl-with-hyacinths-1950/ ↗ Mbakkel2 (talk) 11:58, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
: {{tq|perhaps you never watch non-English language films?}} Leaving such an asinine comment — are you out of your mind? "Wikipedia's content is determined by published information rather than editors' beliefs, experiences, or previously unpublished ideas or information. Even if you are sure something is true, it must have been published in a reliable source before you can add it. ↗" — all editors are expected to follow this policy. What Wikipedia editors personally know, think, or believe is irrelevant. Someone who has been an editor since 2007 shouldn't need a reminder about it. <br /> ''The Avocado'' source you linked states: "{{green|Girl with Hyacinths has been called the lesbian Citizen Kane. (Possibly bisexual.) That’s technically a spoiler, though the film drops plenty of hints to an audience versed in queer coding.}}" ''<u>Possibly bisexual</U>'' is a fail. ''<u>drops plenty of hints</u>'' is speculation. ''<u>queer coding</u>'' is implication. Sources that do not describe a Character XYZ as lesbian (or gay, or homosexual) are useless sources for a list about '''lesbian identity'''. Ambiguous and noncommittal sources may be good enough for a Fandom wiki, but not for Wikipedia. <span style="background-color:#eadff5; color:#6A0DAD;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#AA381E;">(yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus;color:black">&#9890; – not queer.</span> 08:56, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
::In that case, ''Dracula's Daughter'' should also have been excluded? Or is that a film you especially fancy? I don't think that you can read or speak Swedish, but here is a link to an article published by the Swedish Film Database and written by Sofia Håkansson Levin. https://www.svenskfilmdatabas.se/sv/sfdbart-i-de-lesbiskas-garderob/ Mbakkel2 (talk) 11:45, 27 March 2026 (UTC)
::: {{tq|Or is that a film you especially fancy?}} You need to get a grip on your hysterics. If you had used the Swedish Film Database article as the source when you added the film, it would have met the requirement of what sources must verify. We begin in 1950 with the film Girl with Hyacinths, directed by Hasse Ekman, where we follow the protagonist Dagmar Brink through a series of flashbacks after her suicide. The film was groundbreaking because it portrays a lesbian woman whose sorrow is not based on her sexual identity but from an unrequited love."] It specifically identifies the character as lesbian. <span style="background-color:#eadff5; color:#6A0DAD;">'''Pyxis Solitary'''</span> <span style="color:#AA381E;">(yak)</span>. <span style="font-family:Papyrus;color:black">&#9890; – not queer.</span> 08:21, 28 March 2026 (UTC)

: {{reply to|HJ Mitchell}} Since you took an interest in this "newbie", keep an eye on his/her edits: 1 ↗, 2 ↗.
